Do you haggle when you are purchasing high-priced items?

I most certainly do! I always shop around and haggle the lowest price between about 2 or 3 retailers. I hate it when family members just go out and buy whatever, not knowing how much they are getting ripped off.

My brother spent, about 3 years ago, $2000 on a computer that had lower specs than my computer that I brought 2 years prior for $1500.

I love to haggle. For example, when I brought my laptop 18 months ago I went between Bing Lee (where I brought it) and the Good Guys. I wanted a laptop and dad wanted a HD TV, so we knew what we wanted and bundled it together to get the best price. This was our eventual shopping list:

  • Samsung Series 6 116cm (42') HD LCD TV. Was $2,250 but we got it to $2,000
  • Asus M51Va laptop, Intel Core 2 duo 2.53Ghz, 4GB RAM, 512MB graphics. Was $1,900 but we got it for $1,700
  • 8-way powerboard. Was $80, got it for free
  • 1 year of Norton Home Security. Was $80, got it for free
  • Mouse and carry case. Was $50, got it for free

I've never haggled. I usually only buy things when they're on sale, so even if I'm getting sucked in by the psychology of the sale I'm still paying less than I would have if I'd been impulsive/impatient. In otherwords, I tend to wait for sales for products I want.

I haggle when the sales are on :P. I brought my laptop during the pre-Christmas sales. Thus the price was already reduced, but I got it reduced further.

At one of the shops I went to I actually got asked if I wanted a job. I started explaining the product to the sales person, who just happened to be the manager . They wouldn't go down far enough though, so I left them quickly.

I only argue the prices when they seem too outlandish to pay. Other than that, I let them rip me off, and hope that it helps put food on someones table.

I am a very argumentative person when I want to be. Also when you haggle you have to be creative. Say you went to the store across the road and they gave you a deal for the same item but $20 cheaper and ask them to match it, or ask them to throw something in free or at a heavily reduced price.

It's more or less impossible to try to haggle over here. If you try then they'll always say " The price is what it is" and then leave.

I live in Australia. The general rule of thumb is if the store has people that come up and ask "may I help you", you can haggle.

You are basically guaranteed to get 10% off the price if you haggle here. If you don't haggle, you get ripped off big time.

Haggling is expected and encouraged by retailers. As I said above, if a store has someone who asks "can I help you" when you are looking at a product, you can ask for a reduction. That being said, use common sense. If you're buying a $30 DVD don't haggle, but if you are buying 10 $30 DVDs then try.

When it comes to commissioned sales people and large items, the only way to go is to haggle.

Unfortunately I always buy online so that isn't really an option.

The best places to negotiate prices are at local stores and stuff. The big chains will to a point, but not as much as the local guys.

In retail outlets, never. However, when I was 15 and visiting the dealer's room at a nerd convention, I spent a little under $100 total for various things that, as priced, would have been more than $300

See that business model simply wouldn't work here. For laptops, every retailer lets you haggle down the price. If the business wouldn't let you, then it would get no customers.

not really. I don't see much worth buying. I'd rather spend it on other people.. people suffer so much. It's better to give to them than to take for myself.

I don't know about the US, but here if they ask "can I help you?" when you are looking for a product you can haggle, if:

  • It's a technology product (TV, computer, console, etc)
  • Its over, say, $1000, or
  • You're buying in bulk

All you can do it try.

Definitely will have to try it. Especially for the second category.

I don't know about you people, but where I live, the price is pretty much the price... Where I work we literally cannot do anything about the price, especially on the expensive things (game consoles) because the store doesn't make any money off they as it is, we'd rather not lose money while we're at it.

I don't know about you people, but where I live, the price is pretty much the price... Where I work we literally cannot do anything about the price, especially on the expensive things (game consoles) because the store doesn't make any money off they as it is, we'd rather not lose money while we're at it.HybridPhoenix

When I brought the laptop and TV they showed us the order sheet showing how much they paid for the items. We basically got them at-store cost. I know this wasn't a trick because I work in retail and it was the same ordering system we use.

I rarely get the opportunity to haggle, and I'm awful at it...

I always open w/ the price I want to pay. Then they haggle me up, and I end up walking away.

Most people don't know this but you can haggle at Best Buy on high end items. You can basically get something at cost if you look like you're buying cables, and service plans and such cause that's where most the profit is. Use those as your bargaining chips to bring down the price then return them later.
