Naw cuz they can no play sports yeah.

no, as those "smart people" tend to lack common sense and stuff.
everything balances out...I wont sit here and pretend to be booksmart and have technical knowledge of an engineer or doctor.
but I imagine if the stock market crashed tomarow and we had to essentially fend for ourselves, I would be more hireable than either of them

Hm? If the stock market crashed, we would still need doctors and engineers. They're very important to society. People like me would be the ones to lose their jobs. Nobody cares about art when the necessities of life aren't to be found in abundance.
Also, I don't know where the notion that smart people lack common sense came from, but I wholeheartedly disagree with it. Maybe people just think they have no common sense because smart people don't think like they do...

Yeah, I'm not exactly sure why everybody in this thread seems to think that anybody who is in any way smarter than they are must be an idiot savant or something.
It's not like being an engineer automatically means you can't have a girlfriend or tie your own shoes or something...

might just be personal experience. although his and mine would be the same then. I've seen straight A students make some beyond bone-headed mistakes (the sort of mistake were everyone I knew on my intelligence level went, "really?" when they heard it.

... and they also make some very bright decisions too, I'm sure. The fact that they err now and then doesn't mean they lack common sense. The "street smart" people make mistakes too. And I wouldn't put too much stock on an A+; they're handed out like candy nowadays. At least, that's what it seems like to me.

I really think it stems from a difference in opinions and beliefs. Many people feel that a person can't be intelligent unless he believes certain things about the world. This is especially true when it comes to political and religious beliefs. And without intending disrespect, many people will completely miss the point of an intelligent person's argument because they quite frankly can't understand it - and so they come to the conclusion that the argument MUST be unintelligent nonsense, because it doesn't make sense to them. You frequently see this happen in debates here in OT.
It annoys me to see how the words "smart", "intelligent" and "genius" are so easily interchangeable in modern vocabulary with the term "academia."
Yes, there are the godly academias that will always exist yet have no life to them outside of a classroom.
However, the "true intelligence" (even this is a rather vague term) revolves around intellectualism.
Say what you will about Wiki, but here's a tidbit of info regarding intellectualism and intellectuals:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intellectualism
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intellectual
There is a substantial difference between intellectuals and the "academia" individuals. You will know it once you see it.
No, the reason they are more intelligent than me at whatever they are more intelligent in is because they bothered to learn it. I am very capable of becoming knowledgeable on many things, however, I only learn about the things that interest me.. Mainly audio production.
To some degree. I am honestly jealous of those smarter than I. It's one trait that I have a sincere desire for. I am fairly intelligent, but not particularly a genius by any measure. I really excel in math though...
Also, I think the lack of "common sense" mistakes often made by smarter people to some extent is prevalent. Sure, normal people may also make simple mistakes, but I think that the nature of the mistakes is often different.
I don't believe in any of these labels, as they're all just a relative term. People place them on each other to boost their social standing and ego. It doesn't matter if you're "intelligent" or "dumb". It's what people do with their natural talents that makes or breaks them, not conforms them to a set idea of who they're supposed to be in society, though this seems to be the trend in today's society, sadly.
I don't feel inferior to anyone, yet I don't feel superior to anyone as well. Socialities aside, we're all the same, it's just we've been "cut from the cloth", per se, a little different then everyone else, making us all unique individuals in one form or another. Everyone has a specialty they more about then anyone else, so just because the guy next to you gets all A+'s on their physics tests doesn't make him any smarter or you any dumber in comparison, it just means it may not be your specialty compared to theirs. Society wants you to believe that your "intelligence" is valued by what your profession in life is, which is complete crap.
Anyways, sorry for the wall of text, that's just my opinion, nothing more.

I think people are quite capable of understanding another's perspective, even in the most heated of issues. Often clear thinking may be clouded by bias caused by emotional attachment to a point of view. Or perhaps if one finds a side of an argument to be more compelling, they dismiss the other side of the argument as inferior. I used to be a rather close minded individual, because of the previously mentioned mentality. Debates in my mind were subconsciously (sometimes deliberately) attempts to create a logical case, backed by empirical evidence which supported my previously held convictions. I am rather convinced that intellectual maturity plays a large role in this.
[QUOTE="rawsavon"][QUOTE="BiancaDK"]no, smart people do not impress me at all. (:BiancaDKeasy for you to say (no silly jokes this time :) ) Creative thinking can impress me though. =] Anyone can retain knowledge, or put theory into practice, but it is where you invest yourself, how you do it and with what. Wisdom is shown when the creative mind has prepared him/herself prior to practice; gathering whatever amount of relevant data on the field of interest within reason. When the creative mind is exercised in and with wisdom, that is when i feel inferior. Envious. Inspired. =] My post was more along the lines of the truly brilliant. -those people inevitably put their gifts to use, though often with mixed results (creating bombs, computers, cures, or toxins) -it can also be people with rare innate abilities...thinking of the series on extraordinary people (the blind kid that could run and play using only echo location or the guy that could crunch numbers like a computer-the numbers just came to him like flashes of light) So we have the same end result-in awe of brilliant works-just for different reasons it seems -I am more inspired by the person's raw abilities/their talent -from your post, you seem to be more in awe of one's works (if I have that right....which given my track record with your posts is a huge long shot)

you seperate things. you don't have to though.
"raw abilities / talent"
versus
"the works"
works ability talent
the works of ability enabled by talent
[QUOTE="KrunkMastaX"]And Bianca just why is every reply you make to a post so phylisophically complicated and not just simple? I always wonder that.BiancaDKBecause that's how i express myself. I hate it when people who are smart in certain areas think they are the smartest at everything.
I remember in High School the group I was in had very different areas of knowledge. We all understood that we each had an area of expertise, however one person always used to think he was right and everyone else is wrong, and even if we proved him wrong he turned to insults. Now he was a pretty smart guy, but he could not understand that he could be wrong ...

The stock market did crash...and doctors and engineers did fine. When would you not need healthcare? (NHS ftw)
If they prove me wrong with sound evidence then I take it that I should listen to what they have to say and that I may further learn.
No... Because no one around here is intelligent(IRl, not you guys), only religious illogical know it all big mouths
I'm logically smart and can pull along in college, so I'm good. If anything I feel smarter than school mart people, because half the time when you get them off of school work they are very dumb.

I cannot choose my "audience", nor can i find it agreeable that i should leave thinking to the "real" world. Would you like me to articulate myself on face value impulses and impressions on this board? Well then, i'm hungry. I'm also listening to music, music which i like. Let's talk about the music i like. Or the food of which i am about to eat. Or just me in general, it's easier that way, since i can relate to that focal point instantly - no thinking required. =]
All the time at school. Mostly in my math classes when my friends are all doing so well and have got this stuff down so easy, getting like 80% on like every test, while im failing at everything math related. When they see my mark I always think that they see me as some idiot :(Blitz_NemesisHaha, that's so true. While it isn't as bad as yours, I'm getting 92% in Biology and always feel like the 98%ers (the only 2 people that higher than me) think I'm stupid. I don't let it get to me though, I converse with them frequently etc.
