It is kind of weird thinking that if God does exist, there I was living my entire life being an honest, good person, but will be sent to burn for eternity for having doubts about God. But yeah, I feel "safe".

Yes I feel safe believing what I do, if God exist imo he's not like the one described in the bible ie. I won't get punished for not believing in him etc. nothing to worry about

This is my view on the situation - if God is as great as believers say he is, and if I live as good a life as I can and do my best to leave future generations a better world, then I think that me merely not believing and/or worshiping in him shouldn't be of any significance, and if he is so narcissistic that he actually condemns all those who merely don't believe and/or worship him, regardless of how the condemned actually live their lives - why would I even want to be in heaven with an entity like that? How great could heaven actually be if God were actually like that?

It's not a matter of safety, it's a matter of confidence. Am I confident in my lack of belief in a higher being? Yes. Because I believe that there are natural consequenes for our actions here on Earth, and those are enough. We're all going to rot in the ground eventually, but some of us will be rotting peacefully, and others won't. I live my life as I want, within reason. I have a set of morals, that took me a whie to find, but now that I have them, my life is so much more fulfilling. I take pleasure in little things, and don't let things that dont' matter stress me out.

However, I believe that if someone needs faith in God or whoever to make their lives worth living, then more power to them. I admire people with so much faith in things that are hard and sometimes near impossible to have faith in. I will never condemn someone for believing in something that is true to them. Just because I do not share their faith doens't mean I should hate them.

And in general, I do not feel safe. But that stems from something entirely different. :P

why does one feel safe if they believe in God? People who believe in God have just as many horrible deaths, currently, as those that do not believe in God.

I feel safer trusting in myself than I ever did in God. Not that I am anything more than a mere man - but at least I can be pro-active instead of waiting for things to happen for me.

Just realized the song I was listening to fit this thread quite well. "Secured limitations you created this thing you call sin A guide for the undisciplined sheep through the pain and denial the pleasure reaped a freedom contained within a shell and all that's without you call hell You scorn our existence Unclean, despising our ways Shall the unclean come and infect you For our ways, disheveling your hold and the random perplexing the fled Behind the walls of concrete, they hide Secured limitations From uncertainties the god-mind knows and from the nothingness, all the wines flow The affluence, the-mother's gift but you can't, through the concrete You scorn our existence Unclean, despising our ways Shall the unclean come and inflect you For the heathens have chosen a different light and the vision of the all through the inner sight For the freedoms and prisons are in the mind Secured limitations From the uncertainties the god-mind knows and from the nothingness all the wines flow The affluence, the god-mother's gift but you can't see, through the concrete"

Excellent post, sir. Very very close to my beliefs/thoughts on the subject. While I tend more toward a belief in "god" than non-belief, it is not a belief in the one almighty Christian/Hebrew/Muslim God. I look at all the miraculous events that have led to our habital little planet teeming with life and find it harder to believe its all just happen-stance than to believe in something/someone beyond our comprehension having a part in it. I look at us more as a science experiment for some being that has an existence, knowledge and power beyond our current ability to understand.

I do not fear the "after life", if there even is one. On this you and I agree. If I have lived my life having done no harm and done as much good as I can for others, then I'll let the chips fall where they may if I find myself before God's judgement.

Civilised man has been around for more than 30,000 years at least. Christian God has been around for 2,000 years. That means that about 93% of our civilised existence seems to have functioned perfectly well without it.

Lets take an even more ridiculous look at this:

The Universe is about, lets say 14 billion years old, (Im going to round this off to make it easier). Humans have been believing in the Christian God for about 2000 years.

This means that.....wow....my calculater cant even display how small a percentage that is of the universes existance. And people honest think, all the answers of the universe have come to them, through this book (written by people who thought the world was flat by the way), at this very point in time. This insignificant sliver of a percentage of the universes existence, and you are telling me your religion is right?

Right....

If there is a god and he sends me to hell principally because I've spent my life ignoring him than that's a pretty petulant and mean thing to do.

I'm going through huge spiritual changes in my life at the moment. Not religious. Not organized religion anyways. I'm being pulled towards a truth that makes so much sense to me its a wonder I've never made the connections before. Its a wonder I haven't noticed the things I've noticed. It goes so much farther beyond us as Humans or there being a God or Hell. You're implying an entity that IS true unconditional love can truly grow angry. Hell and Satan and demons were the concepts that man created. God is eternal (we just don't have a clear understanding of it) and is the source of all that is. God is energy and the Universe is energy, forever transforming. Energy can't be destroyed or created, it just is in the Universe. Therefore we can't die cause we ARE energy, just in a different form. When we die our energy simply returns to the source or back to Earth if we are not ready to join back with God. My belief in God is growing and changing every day as is my understanding of what the Universe is for and where we fit into it. Organized religion is man's rather sad attempt to control and understand something that is beyond our control and beyond our understanding (at least in this material form).

Heh I'm a long ways from enlightened. The more I study, the more I read, the more I look into myself and figure out, the more questions arise. This is a quest I'm sure I'll be trying to understand and figure out until I transform (I dont prefer the word death anymore). If you would like to know what has compeletly changed my life in this way read the Conversations with God series. Its probably the most eye opening, mind blowing spiritual text I've ever read.,

why wouldn't i? if i didn't feel safe, wouldn't that mean that i did believe in god or that there was a punishment for not believing in god, which would be false because obviously since i think there's a consequence, i must think there's a god or something. hope that made sense.

Yes? I quite comfortable thinking that when I die my consciousness will cease. Hell is such a staggeringly nasty idea that I think one can be excused for the odd irrational panic attack, though.

There's no punishment in the form that we understand it as. People are still viewing God as a vengeful human-like character who is capable of putting us through torture for eternity. I simply don't believe that's true. ALL of that is fear mongering that's been fed to us for thousands of years. I just don't think it works that way. We are all one and part of the same therefore God wouldn't damn part of himself for eternity. I don't think he could... He is pure love which is the purest of all energy I think. Love the feeling, not love the state of mind. Those are two very different things.

Nope. If i didn't believe in God i wouldn't feel safe. But that alone means i am at least open to Gods existence, yes?
So i guess i believe in God a bit.

Let's just say i don't think i can decide whether God exists or not, because of how little i know. We'll see. I only hope that if God exists, that God is really nice.

You are the only other person I have seen on here who shares my belief. What you have been describing is very similar to Buddhist belief, although I do not cconsider myself Buddhist, I have taken a lot from it.

Buddhists describe God as a huge fire, and we are the sparks that fall from it. As we become enlightened, our sparks travel closer to the flame until eventually we become a part of it. Ive always liked that description.

Well, I don't know certainly if I feel "safe" by not believing in a so called "god", I mean the world is dangerous filled with criminals, religous nuts, etc. I don't believe in god, so I'm pretty much safe from hell and all that, but are you really safe from something else?

Mistaken... You should feel completely safe knowing that we are part of something so great and eternal that we only can understand it as God. That brings me great comfort even in the face of world seemingly falling apart around us.

What hasn't he done for you? Given you the materialistic desires that we all are controlled by in this world? What exactly has he not done to pull you towards him at all?MystikFollower
Not everyone believes in God. Don't act as if it's an objective thing, you'll cause controversy.

Don't get me wrong I believe in a god because I believe in demons and hell, but what I don't believe is worship, and religion.
