Depends on the circumstances how they got there. If they're homeless because they're drug-addicts or alcoholics, then no, because those are decisions they made for themselves and paid the price as a result. War veterans, and the mentally handicapped I feel bad for though. Problem is, those asking for help can claim to be war vets but got homeless because of bad decisions. So its hard to determine which of them are telling the truth. Regardless, all of them need help, despite their circumstances.

I feel no deep compassion for anything that isn't important to me. I see them and say damn and give them some change but i don't care too much.

No, honestly, they're homeless because they want to be, if the didn't, they would've already done something about themselves.luisen123

I'm sure those 70 year old war veterans with severe schizophrenia all have themselves to blame.

Agreed. It's very annoying.

Hey Carl here Carl covered this on his blog

Funny because what you find "welcoming" is actually annoying to others. We all know that what you say is your message, it would be like me quoting myself everytime I talk. Its bad manner. From what I've seen you are doing this for attention.

I have compassion for the homeless that could not help it but I do not feel sorry for the homeless that either chose it or caused themselves to become homeless.

Not really at all honestly. I used to care and give them money but learned my lesson when I had one yell at me as I wanted to take him to a fast food restaurant near where he was staying so he could eat. He yelled at me as he wanted the money and not the food. I told him to screw off and stopped caring about the homeless after that completely

Well, unless they tell me a justifiable reason for why they are homeless, I just think: "Get a job."

Or better yet, get a job at a hotel, cause then even if they don't make enough to pay rent, they can just stay in one of the hotel rooms.

Am I heartless?

taylor888

Yep, hotels all give their employees free rooms.

WTF are you even talking about?

Yea, thats exactly why I never really involve myself with them. You try to do a good deed for them, but they're ungrateful. I mean I understand to a point because the whole world pretty much brushed them aside like trash, but still, a good deed is a good deed. I'm almost 100% sure that the guy you tried to help wanted to buy liquor with your money instead.

There are already tons of programs, both public and private, to help homeless people get back on their feet if they're willing to put in the effort. The problem is that most of them enjoy having no responsibilities, and every time you give a beggar a handout, you enable them to continue living that way.

The thing is, homeless people are usually irresponsible. They spend money on drugs, that's just the reason why they are on the streets.

Or are not elligible/need alot more help than being given a shower and a haircut.

Showers and haircuts arn't going to cure schizophrenia. Which alot of homeless seem to have.

Is committing yourself to an asylum free? If it is than they should do that if they have mental problems. Free room & board plus they get the medicine they need and if they commit themselves they can leave at anytime

I'm pretty sure it isn't free. They will put you in there if you are deemed a danger to yourself or society but asylums can't sustain themselves on rainbows and happy thoughts. They have costs.

At best they'll take them in, keep them there for years, and then when they get out give them a bill thats staggering and which they obviously can't pay because they were homeless in the first place.

People who can't work for any reason usually receive big fat checks from the government. You can't receive checks if you're homeless, though. I don't know how it works for them, it's certainly not the same in every country.

When someone homeless asks me for money, I generally try to buy them food rather than giving them money. There have been occasions, however, when they've turned down food, so I won't give them money. I think there may be a high chance they don't want the money for food.

I do but I don't give money. Some will use it for booze, some for food. I don't feel like gambling my hard earned money to either helping or encouraging their situation. Id entertain buying the person food/drink or clothes. I don't think I've ever helped a homeless person though, which - I know - is selfish.

Sometimes it is obvious that it is someone who's fallen on hard times and could use some help. I give them any change I have or a few bucks. The ones that are obviously druggies/drinkers I ignore, though I do feel somewhat bad for.

"There but for the grace of God go I..."

I always try to do what I can whenever I come across someone who's homeless. It may not be much, but it's what I have to offer. No matter what the reasons for are then fact is that they're in a s***** situation, and one that I could not even begin to imagine really. And you know, if I give them a few dollars and they go and buy booze with it then I'm ok with that. If that helps them through their day then I'm glad I could offer some comfort to them. There's really no way for me to know what they do with that money anyway, so I don't worry about it. They asked, I offered freely. What they do then is beyond my control or my concern.

Yes.. Many homeless people are suffering from undiagnosed mental disorders (some extremely serious) that never received help... Or a multitude of other reasons..

Of course. People end up on the streets for a variety of reasons, whether that was due to a horrible situation or bad choices. Even if it was the latter, it's hardly their ideal lifestyle. So yes. I watched a documentary on BBC 1 a while back, had "celebrities" going out to live rough for a week or so, then meeting other homeless people and buddying up with them. Not a nice life to live, especially when one woman was forced out onto the streets to escape an abusive partner.

For several years I'd spend several hours every Thursday night hanging out with homeless people. In other words, yes. I have wept with them, I have laughed with them, I have seen some do something with their lives, and I have seen some continue in their addictions and psychological ailments.

Being that I have extensively worked with homeless people, I heavily disagree. Some of them merely need some hope and compassion poured out upon them before they are capable of "helping themselves." Granted, there are some that enjoy their "freedom" and wish to stay that way. One simply cannot categorize or stereotypicalize the homeless into one group.

How can you not have compassion for someone sleeping on the subway and eating from the garbage? Most of them are mentally ill.
