i.e. the title of this thread... Capital letter at the beginning of the sentence, Capital letters on a name/title... "I" instead of "i," "that's" instead of "thats"... Do you intentionally make the effort to push on that shift button, or is it second nature to you? i originally wrote like this on gamespot because... im not being graded or anything, it doesnt really matter on a forum... but ive noticed that people on gamespot write formally so I've decided to do the same. :P

It would induce in me what I believe to be the very opposite of great felicity if I attempted to write it any other way, you see?

I consider my writing style as an extension of myself. I wish for people to take my posts seriously (unless other wise marked) and thus so make my posts as neat, and tidy as possible.

I wouldn't say using correct spelling and capitalization to be "formal" writing. "Formal" writing would be something academic in nature such as an essay or scientific paper. But using your definition of "formal" writing then yes, I try to have correct spelling and capitalization. I write this way because it's what comes most naturally to me.

When I'm typing in English I always type like this unless I feel really lazy/typing with one hand. This doesn't just apply to GS. When I'm typing in Jamaican Creole however to my friends, it's pretty much shorthand galore.

Do I try to use proper grammar and spelling when I type? Yes, of course. :P I like to think people understand what I'm trying to say through proper English. Not just on Gamespot either.

I wouldn't say that I really write formally, but I do tend to write using caps, commas etc when neccesary. As an aspiring journalist it bugs me when things are not as they should be, although I'll admit sometimes my comma use is a bit poorer than it probably should be.

It's kind of natural, considering it's how we were taught to write/type.

You know, correctly.

I don't think about it, I just do it. I figure if others are reading it, it might as well be grammatically correct and look like a cohesive sentence from the English language.

Sometimes the call of a great internet meme or joke causes me to sacrifice this habit, however.

Not really, it just happens. But there's no excuse for poor punctuation or grammar anywhere, and it's not as if it takes ages longer to ensure forum posts are done correctly. Every time I see mistakes I die a little inside.

No, I just write like how I normally would. When you have access to a full keyboard, there really isn't an excuse to purposefully mistype words just to get your message across faster.

I'm very picky when it comes to grammar and spelling, so I naturally when I post I try to have as perfect spelling and grammar as possible. However, I'm still very ignorant in some areas of grammar (damn you, semi-colon :x), so I do end up making mistakes.

Just use a semi-colon instead of a period between two sentences when you want to make them pretentious; it works like a charm.

It seems as thoug the topic creator has picked up on my behaviours. Very good, very good. However to answer your question with proper technique: It seems as though I do types using formaility to the best of my abilities.

I don't "try". I write the way I do (formally, I guess) because it's natural. The only time I skimp on capitalization and punctuation is when I text.
