Some people hate eating them, and some people love them. I myself love eating them, but we've all(I think) though that we should'nt eat a whole chilli, and yet dared ourselves to do it anyway.

I found out the hard way when my friend dared me to eat a chilli, little did I know that it was a Habenero. :) I later found out that this ranked 100,000 on the scoville scale, so I guess that is my tolerance limit, although some lower levels do make my mouth sting.

So, do you like eating chili's and what is the hottest(by scoville rating) that you've eaten?

You can use Wikipedia to work out your chilli's rating here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scoville_scale

I once ate a habanero. Just thinking about it makes my mouth uncontrollably salivate.

I don't care for them straight up, but in the context of food they are wonderful. The hottest I've had in a meal was an INCREDIBLY sparing amount of the hottest pepper currently on Earth: Bhut Jolokia, the Ghost Pepper. It was great, because the point of using it was to add heat to a dish without changing its flavor, and it worked well. In fact, the dish wasn't the spiciest I've had by a long shot, it just used the pepper that is the hottest.

Habanero, on its own - or in a meal, for that matter, although obviously it's more painful to eat a la carte. I didn't particularly enjoy eating it. I'm not really a fan of spice. I went through a huge spice craze in my early 20s but eventually got to the point where I was eating food that had more heat than flavour, and I stopped.

I don't like excessively spicy-hot food for the same reason I don't like food that is too salty, too vinegary, too peppery, or too sweet. I don't know why it is so acceptable to prepare and serve food that burns your tongue and makes the next morning's trip to the bathroom painful

The hottest I've ever tried was apparently ghost chili.

Either way it was not pleasant.

That's the worst part - it almost always hurts more on the way out than the way in.

Where I come from you all would be disgraced for spelling chile, as "chilli." That being said, I love chile. :)

Not where I'm from. We use the traditional Spanish spelling and pronounciation. Observe: http://hatchnmgreenchile.com/?gclid=CMaosMTOzasCFSVpgwode2P6tA It's all semantics, I'm just observing the cultural differences is all. Around here if you ask for "chili" you're asking for a bowl of beans. If you ask for "chile" you're asking for the vegetable.

I love me some Hatch Chilis. One of my favorite Mexican restaurants is famous for their exclusive use of Hatch chilis(I'll spell Chili however I want :P ) and I usually get a dish that's essentially just lots of diced Hatch chili, shredded chicken breast, and melted cheese with tortillas(you make your own tacos out of them). Sounds plain, but it has a great flavor from the chilis and it's probably one of the hottest dishes I've had at a restaurant.. Normal green chilis are lame IMO, but Hatch chilis are amazing. Great flavor and lots of heat.

Take some butter and brown it, saute a sweet onion, finely chopped chili's of your choice, then minced garlic. Add a whole whack of barley you cooked earlier and rapidly toss to combine. Serve with basil/chili oil (basil, chili's without seeds pureed in olive oil). It's a great mix of smooth heat and the sweet pungency of garlic and onion. This can form the base for adding in all kinds of meats, fish, and/or cheese (not with fish!).
