Enlisted in the Canuck (kinda sorta) Armed Forces at 19. Spent 2 years, 10 months as a field engineer in the 2nd Combat Engineer Regiment (although I spent more than half my time in active service seconded to infantry or armoured regiments as part of UN peacekeeping duties. Guess they don't see the need to send an entire regiment of engineers as a cohesive unit. Kind of a weird situation. Always a perpetual outsider as we were never attached in anything bigger than platoon strength).
Biggest waste of time in my life. Peacekeeping in the former Yugoslavia was a tragic farce. I agreed to stay on in Bosnia for an extra 2 months if they knocked 2 months off my elistment time, just so I could get out of the service and get on with my life.
Low pay, poorly equipped, crap living conditions, ridiculous "sensitivity" training courses every other week, Quebecois officers who could barely string 3 words of English together leading companies, and a parsimonious and disingenous federal goverment all compounded to make it an utterly pointless experience.
