I play guitar mainly, for about 9 years now (mostly electric lead) . Been in various bands the latest of which is an instrumental progressive rockband that Im quite proud of and wish I had more time to get involved in.
www.myspace.com/tgpproject --- is this allowed? Its shameless self promotion. Please someone tell me if its not allowed.
I also play drums to a very basic level and have just joined my friends power metal band even though I cant play anywhere near well enough ... itll be a challenge!
Instruments to learn: Piano, all stringed guitar like instruments (sitar especially), saxophone.

[QUOTE="morpheusnj"]I'm a violinist. been playing for over 10 years now and can plan basically anything and everything out there. (not bragging, being honest) but I do plan on learning electric guitar and piano. once you've played one instrument, it becomes very easy to learn another since many aspects of music you've already grasped.pianist
I'd have to see it to believe it... the Brahms violin concerto, the complete Paganini Caprices, and the complete Bach solo violin sonatas would make a solid argument. If you can actually play these works to a professional standard after only 10 years of practice, you have a significant musical talent. Agreed on learning other instruments... but it's not as smooth a transition when the instruments are not especially similar to each other. You'd do very well to learn piano, though. The nature of the instrument makes it an excellent bridge to others. Not perfecting, mind you. Just the learning part. When I started violin, I found it ridiculously easy to read a single line, and my knowledge of music was already developed, but that didn't make it any easier to learn to bow properly, which is an altogether different physical technique from the technique of playing piano.
You play the violin too?You play the violin too?Lonelynight
Not anymore. I played it from grade 11 through the first two years of university and played well enough to be in the university's orchestra, but between that, percussion, piano, and composition, there was too much going on. I think it's far better to excel at a few things than to be merely adequate in many, because adequate doesn't get you a job in this field. So I honed in on piano and composition.
Guitar! Electric to be more specific. I just putting some new Seymoun Duncan SH-4/Sh-1 pickups in my Epiphone SG and it screams now! Not as good as 1000$+ guitars but it gets the job done. Though weirdly, my Line 6's headphone out hasn't worked or sounded the same. Using the amp speaker with the guitar directly plugged in or plugged into my distortion pedal *Boss Distortion, DS-1 i think is the name, personally I hate it but its good for switching between clean and distorted sounds* but when I have my headphones plugged in it sounds muddy, messy, and just really messed up. Oh well, don't use it much anyway.
I've always been interested in drums and piano *Rock opera kind of style*, too bad I'll probably never get either one of those.

I should put more focus on my piano playing then, I usually just play other instruments as an interest though.[QUOTE="dhyce"]Piano/keyboard, bass, and I just started to learn saxophone because I really wanted to experience learning a brass instrument; sax happens to be my favorite.gameeer1Sax is a woodwind.
Never knew that. Can't say I can really distinguish the two categories apart. I'll go look up their definitions.
Edit; ok, anything with reeds, gotcha. Wow, I'm dumb, not even going into what I thought it meant.

Well, actually, I'm a bit sorry about that. It's just because the body is made of brass that makes it look like a brass instrument, but uses a single-reed mouthpiece, unlike the other brass instruments... My teacher has referred to it as a hybrid sometimes. Though it does have a tone resembling more of that of a woodwind instrument. Again, sorry if it sounded a bit too straight up...D:Well, actually, I'm a bit sorry about that. No, no! It's ok! I like to be corrected; learning is good.I'd much rather be corrected than have people let me go around thinking something wrong is right.

Okay. It's just I was always taught it was a woodwind instrument.:Pedit: Though if you actually want to learn a brass instrument, maybe the trumpet?

Oh, when I said I always wanted to learn a brass instrument I meant to say I wanted to learn an instrument you have to blow into in order to play. I just didn't want to say it like that because, well, it sounds a bit stupid. So, I said the first category that jumped into my mind based on the apprearance of the saxophone.
Though, I would not mind learning to play the trumpet; I do love Miles Davis.

Ah, okay. Just for future reference, any instrument that needs air to produce sound are called aerophones.:PNo I don't which I have always regretted. Growing up I took a few stabs at learning to play the piano and/or the saxophone, but everytime I had it scheduled into my life something strange would happen and my life would get uprooted so eventually I just stopped trying. I just listen. Lord_DaemonNever too old to learn :)
