No matter how sophisticated RTS's get or how good the graphics are I find that it just can never match the experience of sitting around with 5 other friends to play risk. For 2 to 3 hours we sit waging epic war, making treaties, betraying friends, running over strategies in our head.

I have yet to get the same feeling in a video game as I do when I turn in my cards for a 50+ reinforcement to devastate my opponents.

For 2 to 3 hours

You're saying you've never played games that spanned several days?

You've still yet to play a real game of RISK

They do last for days, 2-3 hours is the usual time we have set aside for our gaming session.

I love the game, but I have a problem getting enough people who like it as much as me. I do have it on my pc, not the same but a good way to brush up on the skills.

I have the exact same problem. The only person I can get to play is my older sister and she lives an hour and a half away. Though when my brother's girlfriend came over from Canada for a week they actually played with me.

Never played. I was an only child, growing up in the country. I think my brain would have imploded had I tried to play on my own...

I enjoy the game, but it just takes so long to play. I don't really have anybody with the time or patience to play along, though my family is willing to try sometimes.

Whee! Axis and Allies! I used to play that for days with my dad when I was a young kid. It's so much better than Risk imo. Now that I think of it, I wanna play!

Then like Risk, beer, mountain dew and a bag are required.

Diplomacy is the far superior strategy game. When random chance is involved, there is no such thing as "strategy."

My friends and I bust out the board once in awhile. We start off sort of serious, but eventually just start randomly teaming against each other and making stupid moves. We don't have the patience to play a real game of Risk lol.

I persnally think you can't have strategy without random chance. A good strategist would not only be able to outthink their opponents but they'd also know how to deal with niches in their plan. In the real world things don't always go perfectly for the strategist. Weather conditions can be unfavorable, equipment can malfunction, and the officers under you can be insubordinate. That's what I think the dice represent.

I definitely love to play a good game of Risk. Especially when you take over Australia early, then get to enjoy building up a massive army while most people ignore you because it would be a waste for them to target you ;)

See, basing real plans of world domination on a 50 year old game shows a certain lack of strategery.

I love Risk, it's just so damn hard to find someone to play with. I remember my first game my cousin's husband told me that the thing you always want to remember is that it's nothing personal. He understood just how much losing this game could get under one's skin. I have played many games that start in the early afternoon and end in the early morning, there is no break and no setting the board aside, it must be played to completion or not at all.

Once a friend came at me with and advantage of about thirty armies it was roughly 50/20 and the red dice just weren't falling, I held him off to the point where he had to drop an attack die and rather then do that he picked up the board and threw it, my mom made him pick it all up and put a ban on Risk for a while.
