I'll go with snow cause it's more beutiful than the desert, and you only have to wear clothes to protect yourself from cold, unlike desert where you can't do anything about the intense heat (though night is really cold), let alone thirst.

What about you, OT? Would you go the Rub' Al' Khali? Or the South Pole?

I don’t like the heat at all. I’ll take snow. Though both are difficult choices.

Yeah, I'm also struggling with intense heat. 32C during night lol. Reached 50C during Noon. And don't get me started about the sweat. I litterally have to Take a shower every day.

Snow. As you said, it's easy to keep warm. Never been to a desert, and I really don't want to.

Between the two, snow. One can also add layers but there's only so much you can take off.

I got a feeling it might change some of the answers here if people experienced cold weather as intense as they might have experienced hot weather.

Sure, I don't like it when it is above 30-32C. I need help to cool down. However -30C and colder is cold. Take a leak and it freezes before it hits the ground.

yup. desert is defined by lack of rain / moisture, not necessarily temperature iirc

if i had to choose permanent living in either i'd probably kill myself though. hate long stretches of unbearable heat and hate long stretched of frigid cold.

I'm not too fond of the cold as I was mostly raised in urban hot regions. Desert is for me as I'm used to heatwaves going over 100 degrees and there are lots of ways to not overheat yourself. It rarely snows in Atlanta GA and when it does, it gets bad here.

-30C often, every winter, multiple weeks

-45C occasionally, most winters, a few days

Cold will kill you faster than heat.

Yes, but it is much more frequent on the prairies or in the north than either coast or southern Ontario or southern Quebec so even most Canadians do not grasp that -45C will kill you in minutes if you are not prepared. Vancouver can't even handle a little bit of snow because no one there has snow tires and the most populous area of the GTA doesn't really grasp that 1-2 hours north is the lake effect snow belt that is punishing compared to the GTA itself. So while I agree we all know it is pretty cold, most Canadians do not really experience extreme cold.

@SUD123456: Yeah I think you’re right. I live in Alberta and it’s hit -45 once or twice last winter. In Quebec and Ontario has the humidity which makes it feel colder. I lived in Quebec for years and with the humidity I felt like I was going to die sometimes.

Are you sure?

High temperatures and humidity, Risk of tropical diseases( malaria, dengue fever, Zika virus for exemple), Precipitation patterns, Biodiversity threats, Limited access to resources, Natural disasters( hurricanes, typhoons, and earthquakes ) all don't sound any better than both the options.

Yah, humidity blows.

I live in Calgary now, but have also lived in Vancouver, Edmonton, Toronto, Ottawa, Belleville, Montreal, Fredericton, Germany, and I have a snowbird property in Portugal. All countries have regions but I think really big countries like Canada, US, Russia, China , etc. have many more diverse zones that it makes it harder to generalize things like climate.

This isn't really a fair question at all. Most people have likely never lived in a desert. I'm one of them. So I'm obviously picking the snow. After all, I've had great times when it snowed. Like going out to the movies with them, and us being some of the few people there. Or staying inside and drinking hot cocoa while eating pastries.

@horgen: We usually hit -30 every winter here. Though it's usually sunny with no wind, and very dry, so you don't actually feel it that much.

As much as I hate it, snow would likely be far more manageable. I've genuinely shovelled up to 4 feet of snow, and it's "manageable" i'd assume in comparison to sand. Overall, i'd rather live somewhere temperate.

As far as living year round, I'd prefer the desert. I would have said the winter a couple years ago but I've lost a lot of weight and now I actually tolerating the 90-95 F days we get around here occasionally.

Now, with that said, I don't live in a desert and Arizona and such have been seeing summers with most days over 110 F and yeah...that'd get old fast.

But I think it'd be easier to deal with that. Homes have AC, cars have AC...if you wanted to, the only time you'd have to experience heat is when you needed to go from your car to inside a store or your home.

Snow is also more of an obstacle. While the heat is more of a nuisance, snow can block roads and make it dangerous to drive; it can prevent your children from attending school or you from attending work; it can make you isolated in extreme conditions and bury you in your own home.

I do love the idea of snow, and how picturesque it is (and I find the desert to be ugly and dry and dustry and sandy), but if you're asking me to pick what would be most convenient to live in, I'd say desert.

Snow by far! Skiing is a lot of fun and my brain hates heat.

A lot of Swedes go down to the Mediterranean in the summer. I have zero wish to do that. I love it up here, constant raining and all 😅.

Yeah people ask me that when I say I'd like to live somewhere cold lol.

My response is often "Oh ya I wear shorts year-round, even when it gets like 35 F" and they just kind of laugh.

I have family from Chicago and have met people from other cold areas and we get to talking and they'll often say how great it is and how much they miss and I will sometimes ask "Any desire to move back?" and their response of often "**** no, way too cold" lol.

That response above all others sort of tells me all I need to know about living in the cold. Also all the retirees spending their last years in arizona and Florida...

Always some oddballs(not negatively meant). For most people, intense heat is easier to deal with than intense cold.

Then a desert tbh. I've never dealt with super heavy snow, and I don't want to drive through it or plow through it.

@shadowsentiel: I'm not talking about moving into the middle of the Amazon rain forest or something... lol. Just a couple acres of beachfront property someplace like Hawaii, Bahamas, Canary Islands, Fiji, the Florida Keys... something like that. My wife and I have been talking about it for years, so when she retires it's probably going to happen. I've actually never heard of someone being so concerned of a person wanting to live out their remaining days in paradise.. but to each their own.
