I think nearly everybody in the UK drives manual.

Automatic. I tried a manual one time, never got the hang of it really. I'm sure I could do it, but I won't ever WANT a manual. The only reason I'll ever learn (and I will) is so if in an emergency the only vehicle available for me to drive is a manual, I'll be able to. I don't drive for 'fun' (is that a man thing?), I drive to get places and driving in city traffic is hard enough without the extra work of a manual imo. So many things you need to pay attention to without worrying if you're shifting correctly. And besides all that, if manual is the choice for speed demons... I follow the posted speed limits, so there's no point in me getting a really fast car because I'll never use it.XilePrincess
I'm much the same. If I go over the speed limit, it's by one or two MPH and it's only becaues I can't stare at the speedometer.
One thing that really sucks about manual transmissions in these parts in that East Tennessee is nothing but hills. When you come to a stop on a hill you're gonna roll back a little bit when you release the brake and shift into gear, and the idiots around here like to go bumper-to-bumper when you stop. Or hell, even at highway speeds.

Yeah I hate being on a hill with somone's front wheels right behind you and you know you're going to roll a bit.
Another thing is, pro's like me can start a manual in 2nd.

This is the main thing that's always scared me about manuals. On steep hills you will roll back some and you can't control how close someone is behind you when you stop.i really don't have a preference but right now my wrx and my wifes outback are manual.
she was nervous about learning to drive one but it was easy and we were able to pick up her outback for $10,000 less than sticker at the subaru dealership because nobody wanted it and it had sat on the lot for months with no interest from anyone.
Man. Now I miss my car.
It had scews and a penny jammed into the battery connections.
I sprung a pin hole leak on my radiator so I chewed up a peice of gum and stuck it on there.
My engine was stained from the five times I forgot to put the oil cap back on.
Loved that car.
Yeah, they are. I came to page three of this thread and there were no replies. Are the forums screwed up (again) for anyone else?

Well, pull the E-brake at a stop and shift into neutral. When you have to move, shift into first, and start reving to catch the gear and then let go of the e-brake.Show me the new posts, GS.
GS should try one of those free forum thingies. I'd be an improvement at this rate.

That sounds like a pain in the ass. And a good way to strip a gear.

If you learn how to drive one well you won't roll back on hills if you don't want to. Yeah, stopping on a hill is a pretty big part of learning how to drive manually. Even in flat Holland.[QUOTE="br0kenrabbit"]

What's with this notion that driving manual takes more effort or is more mentally/physically taxing? Anyone who can actually drive stick well will tell you that it's just second nature and unless you have a particularly stiff clutch pedal, the extra "effort" is hardly noticeable.Dark__LinkYeah. Might take a bit more effort to learn (I never drove automatic so idk), but once you learn it it's like driving a bike.

If you learn how to drive one well you won't roll back on hills if you don't want to. A lot of cars even have "hill assist" that will either sense brake pressure or incline and keep the brakes engaged for a few seconds after you let off the pedal so you have time to get on the gas. It's not particularly useful once you've got enough experience with the car, though.[QUOTE="br0kenrabbit"]

There is no emergency brake in any vehicle. It is a parking brake (read the bloody manual). While the parking brake could be used in an emergency, one should not depend on it working, especially as most are not adjusted properly due to lack of use by the majority of the driving population. I can't tell you how many vehicles I worked on over the years as a mechanic where the parking brake went all the way to the floor or came all the way up with no discernible engagement of the brakes due to lack of use.
I have changed plenty of clutches over the years too. If a clutch isn't replaced at least once during the life of the vehicle, some little old man who rarely drove it had to have been driving it. Clutches do wear out, but throwout bearings will give up before the clutch does more often than not. If I am gonna replace the throwout bearing, I am replacing the clutch at the same time.

This is the main thing that's always scared me about manuals. On steep hills you will roll back some and you can't control how close someone is behind you when you stop. I admit that this is one of the scariest parts about driving a manual..but trust me, after a week or so of training, you will completely master that aspect and the distance rolled back between the shifts wont be any longer than the distance every car has when releasing the brake and hitting the gas on a hill. Go practice to some empty hill, you gotta learn to switch your feet quickly. and if there is an emergency, and you dont want to risk it, just dont let go of the clutch, pull the handbrake, release the brake pedal and step on the gas with the handbreak, step on it for 2 seconds or so and start releasing the clutch slowly then release the handbrake and you're good to go, no distance travelled back. an alternative to that method is trying to press both the brake and the gas with 1 foot, and then gradually letting go of the brake. You wont roll back if you get the clutch to bite and hold in first gear, hill starting is easy if you know what your doing.V4LENT1NE
When I'm in my truck (my stick) I typically have hay or horses on the back. The b1tch wants to roll backward going uphill with the gas down.
Some of the hills in these parts are steep enough that they are impassable by any vehicle in even a little rain. Folks in some parts of the country call hills half the size of these mountains.
I also don't like how much travel my clutch has, makes me knee ache after an hour or so.
