define "first computer".

if youre talking about the first computer I remember using, that would be sometime in 1992 when I was playing games like Prince of Persia at my grandparents' computer , I think it was a 386. I was also playing on a 486 games like Wolf3D at my other grandparents' house.

the first computer I actually owned though was in 1997 I believe , it was a Pentium 166 I think , 32Mb of RAM and a massive.... 8gb hard drive , which was probably the highest capacity drive we could find at the time. The amount of time I spent playing Starcraft and Tiberian Sun on it....

had Win95 in the begining , but ended up upgrading to 98SE , along with an extra 32Mb of RAM for good measure.

The first computer in our house was this old Apple (although I feel like it ran a DOS-like OS so that doesn't make sense) that had a 5.25 drive and monitor that was only capable of producing the color green.

The first computer that was mine and mine alone was a IBM 286. A local college was throwing away computers and my mom picked up this one and gave it to me. It had a 16 color screen. It was old when I got it and I remember the irony of suping up the modem with an old 33.6k one from our previous home PC that was like a 486. It was a fun machine. I used to make text adventures in QBasic and play BBS games on it.

I'm sorry to say I never took photos of my Commodore C-128 or numerous Commodore Amigas (from A500 up to A1200). Nor did I take photos of my early IBM-compatibles (Tandy 1000SX, Leading Edge 386SX-25).

However, I did take a photo of my first DIY which was assembled in 1992.

AMD 80386-DX40, AMD 80387 math coprocessor, Cirrus Logic ISA SVGA card, 1mb(?) RAM, ISA SB Pro sound card, 3.5" and 5.25" high density floppy drives, 52mb IDE hard drive

Plus a then brand new 1x CD-ROM drive - the reason why the photo was taken (in 1993).

A Magnavox Video Writer Processor. The thing was only good for typing, though. I think it had one "word game" on it which is all I pretty much used it for since I was too young to care about writing.

Mine was a Compaq with Windows 3.1.1; a 1200 baud modem, and a 50mb HD. I couldn't tell you how much RAM or what the CPU clock speed was. This machine was from the early 90s ('91-92).

The only games I really remember playing were Sid Meier's Pirates, Doom 1/2, Wolfenstein 3D.

hmm.. i don't recall exactly what it was but remember it had a catridge slot or something on it.. would have been in like 1983/84/85 or something like that. i just remember playing some presidential trivia game on it.

after that we had a commodore 64 which i loved because we had a ton of games for it

my first x86 based system was an 8MHz 286 w/ like 640K of ram and like a 5 or 10MD HD running some version of MS-DOS that my father built which we had until like 1994/95. didn't have a ton of games for it but it ran the original civ so i can't tell you how many hours i logged on that badboy..

My dad bought this bad boy in the mid 80's. Cost like a $1000 lol. It had two 5 1/4 floppy drives that I would play classics like Might & Magic II on. I remember playing all the goldbox SSI D&D games on it in with its 16 amazing colors.

Ahhhhh, good times.

This beast be it. Complete with two floppy disk drives and this weird thing called a CD-drive. Also weighed a ton. Be jealous.

Oh yeah. A little Compaq Presario. Was awesome for it's time. Then I got an HP which I installed my first video/sound card in, then a Dell, and then started building my own.

always wanted a Compaq when I was younger, mainly because of the huge red logo, lol.

Yeah, there's something about Compaq that makes it appealing. Windows 98. I still remember the monitor model: MV720.

One of the first things I tried with the computer was selecting all the icons on the desktop and pressing enter... it didn't end well.

386/33 with 265K RAM. Played Gorillas and Nibbles. Amazing for it's time.

Then we upgraded to a 486/66 with 1MB RAM. Played Doom II with the "beep boop" sounds. That was epic.

  1. Windows 95 was in English and my parents had problem with "El Dificil" ("The Difficult One, the local nickname for English) but I was on a bilingual school so I must be an English expert! (Even though I had a hard time with it and didn't hit my stride until middle school).

Where are you from? I always took you for an American =)

From one of, if not the, last colonies on Earth: Puerto Rico. People born here are US citizens, however.

I just remember getting a PC (Windows 95) when I was 6 years old in 1997 with:

  • Duke Nukem 3D
  • Shadow Warrior
  • Doom 1 & 2
  • Mass Destruction

I wish I kept it. It would have been interesting to know what the specs of the machine were.

Some "IBM compatible" 286 16mhz I believe. I think it had 20mb hard drive or maybe 40. My first game was some nightmare on elm street then later got commander keen and a gravis gamepad snes controller knock off.

I ran on dos and I had a file explorer called xtree. I remember installing kings quest 6 on like 10 floppy disks and I had to delete like everything else to fit it.

Yeah, I remember playing on Commodore 64 in elementary school as my first computer when I was little. Then I remember having to play computer games from Apple II to Apple IIgs in special ed middle school. Then I had to play games on my uncle's first computer, called Windows 95. Those were the days I remember fondly. :)

can't remember what brand it was or what specs it had. I know it ran MS-DOS and I remember playing a fair amount of Mach 3.
