I respect them because they do the job that I don't want to have to.

However, the only reason I don't want this job is because I feel that current military operations aren't doing anything to protect our country. If our nation was truly in danger I would join the military in a heartbeat.

Do I respect the ones who sign up out of genuine desire to fight for their country? Sure. Do I respect the ones that are there just for the money? No. Should I bow down and be patriotic just because they're soldiers? Hell no.

Depends on the Soldier. The one that busts his behind doing his job? Every day and twice on Sunday. The dirtbags, such as Bradley Manning or Nidel Hasan? Hell, no.

If they deserve respect, yes. It would depend on the individual. I do think being in the military is a respectable job, though.

Yeah. Reading that made me think of Vietnam, It's silly to respect someone who probably chose their job due to pay/benefits then wanting to serve to protect their fellow man.

No, it couldn't. If you think that you're a disgusting individual. Terrorists don't like to target military personnel, they target civilians. Women, children, people who haven't volunteered to fight. The military doesn't go out and decide "Hey, we're going to kill some civilians today."

So please, take your nonsense somewhere else.

It's not silly. The military doesn't get paid well. They get taken care of, but they still have to pay taxes, and many do live below the poverty level. The reason it's worth it is because it's considered an honorable profession.

The second it stops being regarded that way is the day our voluntary armed services dies.

No, it isn't. Lol. When your main goal is to MURDER civilians in an attempt to make a government do something, that isn't right. That's not war, nor is it honorable. I suspect you have some sort of mental illness if you think that it is.

I very sincerely doubt you could join the military. They'd probably disqualify you at MEPS.

The American Founding Fathers would be considered terrorists.

They even attacked English forces on CHRISTMAS DAY, which was unheard of at the time.

I try to respect everyone, so yes, I respect people who serve in the military. Personally, I'm glad I was not drafted to go 'kill or be kiled' or 'fight for our country', as I'd rather not have to choose or be ordered to take a life.

I dont respect a person for their career choices. I respect them for the person they are.

I find most people tend to idolize military members for some inexplicable reason. Most arent in the military for the "honor" or any kind of duty-bound service - they joined the military for its benefits. I can assure you that military enlistment rates would near 0% if there wasnt pay or benefits involved. So much for "honor."

The Military is not voluntary you have to register(select service)once you turn 18 or you can get a felony. Whether the draft is still relevant is another issue, but it's not voluntary. If it was voluntary their shouldn't be a penalty for not wanting to enlist.

No matter how patriotic you are you still need to pay the bills. Patriotism doesn't pay the rent or put food on the table. South Korea pays their initial troops less than $70 a month and they have conscription to fill their ranks.

Some people like troops simply because if the people serving in uniform didn't volunteer they might be drafted instead. Which is why they usually could care less why they enlisted and are just glad they enlisted at all.

It's not all nonsense... It's been reported that the US military killed just over 7000 civilians in Iraq between the start of the illegal invasion and the end of 2003 alone... but on topic, respect is something that must be earned -- it's not something you're automatically entitled to just for donning a uniform... I am certain that there are a great many US soldiers who deserve our respect... sadly, there are also a great many who do not...

what are you talking about? i never had to do any such thing when i was 18, i did however volunteer for the military, as did every one of the soldiers, sailors marines and airmen i have worked hand in hand with both stateside and downrange. that just makes you ignorant for saying its not voluntary, sorry. back to the topic it depends on where your at, when i was stationed in England the british civilians were very kind to us as was the Royal Airforce and Army members, however come back stateside and the first sight i see upon leaving base is protesters with signs lol, seems americans hate us more than foreign countries go figure I, nor anyone i know expects respect but we sure as hell dont want to be spit on. Everytime I'v deployed i have encountered such kindness from people offering to buy my meals or pay for a taxi etc, i am very grateful for these kind souls.

You had a driver's license, or voter's registration before enlisting? If so you signed the select-service form whether you paid attention is a different story. If not you were committing a federal crime after your 18th birthday and could(though unlikely) convicted. The Military is not a voluntary, voluntary is within your free will, the draft still holds(thought not relevant) and that alone gives away your rights, and rights are nonexistent anyway if you don't believe me google 'Japanese Americans 1942".

@DJ I can't edit for some reason, but regarding 'being spitted on' (Vietnam comes to mind), that's not what I'm saying, I'm simply saying you don't deserve any more respect then a Police officer, fireman, doctor, or anyone else who gives mutual benefit to society.

The American Founding Fathers would be considered terrorists.

They even attacked English forces on CHRISTMAS DAY, which was unheard of at the time.

No, they wouldn't be. Nice try, though. And you've just shown why in your own post.

You do understand that attacking people on christmas back then is the equivalent of blowing up a building full of civilians today?
