Hopefully we'll come to our senses and stop encouraging Israel. The moment they think that they can drag the US into a war with Iran, they'll take it.

No. There is no point to going to war with them. It would be a bigger mess than Iraq.

With all of the cuts the DOD is facing right now I don't see the US trying to start a war with Iran anytime soon. Especially with troops being let go and new equipment contracts being canceled. Granted, if Israel does a preemptive strike on Iran and they demand we help Washington may consider it but it wouldn't hurt my feelings if DC told them they made their bed now lay in it.

doubtful in the near future, though it might have to at some point, wheter Iran goes nuclear or not.

even more so if Iran goes nuclear, the US may well have to defend its interests in the Gulf.

strikes against specific targets - somewhat likely

its much more likely that isreal will be the one to take action with the US being there for moral support. if iran responds with a massive attack then the US will most likely get involved.

Not if they have any sense. Entirely different card game to most of the other countries in the middle east. It would be an unmitigated disaster from start to finish with all of the media around the world against such a campaign.

Maybe in a decade or so. We're at odds with Iran but I highly doubt it will end up as a full-scale war.

I'm more concerned about Syria.

There will be some kind of military confrontation between Israel and Iran I'm sure. you have Iran on the one hand who doesn't really have any respect for current power structures in the region while also having some 'imperial' aspirations of their own. And you have Israel who is often erratic and paranoid.

Look at it this way. The prospect of a nuclear-armed Iran is unthinkable to the United States and the West generally. Iran will be invulnerable to any and all military action from the west, which means that they will bully and invade their neighbors (specifically Bahrain, Iraq) and bully their regional adversaries (Israel, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia). If that wasn't bad enough, it will start a nuclear arms race among middle eastern states, which will only multiply the likelihood

In order for the United States to persuade Iran to not build a nuclear weapon, they have to make a credible promise to *never* launch a ground invasion/regime change of Iran.

Two problems
1) The desire to be able to invade Iran in case of emergency is exactly why we don't want them to have a nuclear weapon
2) There is no way to make it impossible for us to invade and topple Iran.

So there's three things we can do
1) Bomb, which will just make it so that Iran gets a nuclear weapon later rather than sooner
2) Do nothing, which is unacceptable
3) Invade.

I sure hope not. I think we have used up all our wars. No more. I'd vote to impeach whatever president tries to lead us to war. Unless we were attacked, I dont want any more war.

Even if we do, it won't be much of a war. We'll just toss a few nukes in Iran's general direction and then BAM it's over.
