Mars would be better, because of the presence of an atmosphere.

There's nothing to do on the moon except jump around on the surface.

It's future for humans is basically a weekend-trip tourist attraction since it has no useable resources for humans to plunder.

Really? They've recently sent A Moon Mineralogy Mapper component to collect data for future extraction.

one of the worst ideas made by ahuman ever

on earth we still have famines, wars, diseases and a lot of threats to take care of

and instead of fixing these problems they would spend billions of billions of dollars just for some sort of rich people to have some

luxury on the moon ...............

ridiculous

the-wayward

;)

It could be useful to have production facilities, factories and that sort of thing on the moon, but I don't think anyone would really want to live there.

I have an idea: Create self-replicating, self-molecular converting nanorobots/nanites. Program them to the needs of humans. Inject them into humans. Humans become superhuman. Place nanite depot on moon. Terraformation.

It could be by the time we have the money to colonise the moon.

There's no way to get electric power on the moon.

The only possible way to get electric power on the moon is solar energy.

And I don't mean best way, I mean ONLY way.

You can't burn oil or coal as you need oxygen for the combustion of that stuff, of which the moon completely lacks.

There is no wind energy to harness. No dams, do tides.

You would need constant vegetation inside the base to transform CO2 into O2 for the humans to breathe.

There's a lot of other things that need to be taken into account, and if done right, it is possible, but I don't see the point of it.

You haven't heard about Nuclear Fuel/power? ...they are already using it, New Horizons (will reach pluto by 2015) has a plutonium power source.

Oh, I forgot about nuclear power. Yeah, that can work too, but there are too many waste hazard issues with that.

Colorizing the moon is a great idea! It's so boring, all gray like it is. They should bring some life to the moon with a multicolored light show, like Niagara Falls

To put it straight, mining the moon is possibly going to be the "one giant leap for mankind". Helium-3 is an abundent resource on the moon and is the key fuel for creating Nuclear Fusion energy. I see some of you say we need to fix this plant up first before we can ruin another, well, if we mined the moon of just some of its H-3 it would rid the world of its depandents on fossil fuels FOREVER!!!. Scientists say only 25 tonnes of H-3 is enough to power the U.S and Europe for a year with Nuclear Fusion. Your probably thinking HEY! thats some pretty good s***, right? even better scientists are coming up with workable designs for a reactor which will theoretically deliver ten times more fusion energy than the amount needed to heat up plasma to required temperatures, if you didn't understand its a self sustained energy source. They reakon it is scheduled to be operational in 2018 - 2020.

Now, who can tell me what the Sun is!?

Thank you! - Helium-3 is one of the major reasons why most nations are gearing up to go for the moon, america for example doesn't give a rats a** if people think the moon landings were fake, there going for Helium-3 - the external coverup is just for the media "returning to walk on the moon, hurray!!"

its the best place to start if we ever want/need to colonise other planets, but to be honest i doubt it'll ever happen in our lifetime

I think it should be used as a giant refrigerator for the moment. Food can't rot in a vacuum, so we should just blast all our fresh mangoes and fish out there, and when we do finally get around to colonisation, we'll already have years worth of sustenance, and can celebrate our landing with a massive salad.
