For official documentation yes. That doesn't mean other languages cannot be spoken in the land....Would it make a difference?

Yes they are. But that doesn't mean it couldn't change. And frankly it might give some immigrants the impetus to learn English. A language barrier can be a problem for success. Shouldn't we want success to be the goal of citizens?[QUOTE="Aljosa23"]I thought official documents were already in English?[QUOTE="LJS9502_basic"] For official documentation yes. Shouldn't we want success to be the goal of citizens? I thought it was freedom?! My mistake. No, it goes against everything the founding fathers stood for. It would also assure the demise of the english languageMarth6781
How so?

They didn't put an official language for a reason. they foresaw that with the type of country they are creating multiple languages would be the norm. Making English the official language ensures that a barrier exists between new people trying the learn the language in the country, effectively in the future the englsih language will die in the country. It's a pretty deep topic in American literature.Ironically quite a bit of separatist feelings came from the Official Languages Act. Not the biggest factor, but definitely part of the mess Canada's in now.Yes, as an American you should be able to communicate and interact with every other citizen.
When speak different languages this complicates this matter greatly, and encourages separate societies form.
Look at Canada Quebec political disaster.

No. It would make certain sections of the population happy, but it would not do much in forcing non-native speakers to learn English.

Exactly... making english the official language will just ensure that it dies in the americas.Marth6781
I seem to recall you stating this twice in this thread, but I can assure you that it will not die in the Americas. English is the mandated language of air traffic control around the world. It does not matter if you are in Russia, China or Argentina, English is the language pilots and ATC communicate in.
Certainly. Not learning the main language of a country you areliving in is anti-social, and being able to understand it should be enforced by law to reduce cultural divides.Overlord93
This.
I've met people born here that can barely speak english. I'm ass-uming the public schools they went to taught in spanish and nobody took the english lessons seriously. Why should they when everyone they know speaks spanish. That's basically saying, "Screw you America. We're going to form our own little isolated island right in the middle of your country."
