That's basically saying, "Screw you America. We're going to form our own little isolated island right in the middle of your country."

That's a stretch.

not really. they are largely refusing to even learn our language...when you immigrate to a country, you have to adapt and integrate.

You're going to have to be more specific.

specific with what? In many broad areas in the country (like border states) Spanish is becoming more common than English.

Um, specific about the claims you are making.

Also it's important to keep in mind that it is a tall order to expect that first generation immigrants (especially poorer immigrants) become particularly proficient in the English language. That's never going to happen and it never has happened, just because of the science behind language accusation. You just have to look at the history of immigration in this country - first generation Italian immigrants spoke mostly only Italian - the same is true for Jewish immigrants, many of whom only spoke yiddish.

But looking at the numbers shows that there is not some widespread rejection of the English language by immigrants. A large majority of foreign born Latino immigrants speak at least some English at work. And more importantly, even though only 23% of first generation Latino immigrants speak English "very well", the numbers spike all the way up to 88% for second generation Latinos and 94% for third generation Latinos. So where is this refusal from Latino communities to learn the English language?

I think it should. It ensures that there will always be a universal tongue, in the United States, no matter what type of immigrants decide to move there.

Is it not already? Seriously? You're telling me 200+ years of existing and you still don't have an official language?!

No because Spanish is fun as hell to speak and learn. It's really, really easy to learn. Trust me, I took Chinese last year and got a B in it. Grammar in Chinese is pretty much the exact opposite of Spanish and English. It's also way more fun to learn. xiexie

How "fun" a language is to learn has nothing to do with it being a national language.

True, but, if only we could show the people who don't think it's fun that it is fun. Then, obviously, it becomes less of a chore and more of a joy...which it should be anyway.

My point is that an official language should be based on the language spoken by the majority. Since Spanish is not spoken by the majority of Americans, it should not be the official language of the United States.

ITT: people don't understand the implications of declaring a language as 'official'. In this case, there aren't any.

A lot of people feeling threaten, in a few years this won't be an issue since even suggesting it would offend one of the biggest voting blocks in the country.

Yes. Would save us tons of money by having to cater to secondary languages in places like the DMV, and IRS.
