I thought a 4.0 is perfect in the US. And you have 4.7, so clearly I'm missing something.

Weighted is out of a 4. Under weighted is out of a 5 if you take AP, or ib classes.

Some higher-level classes can be weighted differently. Weighted GPAs can usually go up to 5.0, but colleges only care about your unweighted GPA (out of 4.0).

Well I don't know enough about you to say for sure but you should have a decent chance of getting into Yale or even Hardvard. I was accepted by both myself even though I had no intentions of attending either school. :P I wanted an excellent university close to home. Like you, I honestly had doubts that either school would accept so I was a bit surprised when they did. You can do it!!!! :D

 What? the highest possible GPA is 5.0.

Highest in South Carolina is 5.87, although it is impossible to get (unless you can convince people that PE is an AP level cla$$). On topic, from what I hear about the Ivy League schools is that they get so many good applicants its pretty random if you'll get in, even if you are a super genius. Can't hurt to apply, besides the application fee of course.

Affirmative Action lowers your chances. And to add to that fact, someone from a foreign country will get in.

True Story: The head of admissions @ UPenn:

HoA: "Ok, so how many kids from Sri Lanka do we have applying?"

Employees sorting out apps: "Three"

HoA: "Let them in"

Without even looking at the applications....:|

And the funny thing is that it wasn't even a typo. Hardvard is actually a secret ivy league school with such noteable evil genius alumni as Dr. Evil, The Architect, The Brain (from pinky and the brain) and Lex Luthor. True story!

Well from what I know there is a bit of a push to get more women/minorities/diversity into the science/engineering fields. So if your planning to pursue something like Biochemistry or Biomedical engineering then your gender would be an advantage to help you stand out from the more prototypical applicant that applies for science/engineering degrees. With your good grades and extracurriculars that gives you a good chance.

Also does your high school rank all the seniors (like mine did), if so then your rank amongst your peers may be a good or bad thing. If you have good grades and a bunch of other people have good grades like yours that brings down the curve in your school, but if your stand out above the rest of your peers then that helps a lot. I know a lot of people who bombed the SAT but since they were ranked in the top 10 in their school they still got into big name universities.
