"Hey, sorry guys, I'd hang but I'm busy tonight, I'm gonna be online tonight talking to my internet friends!"

Well, do you? I personally don't, and I think in some ways making friends on the internet is easier than making friends in real life, but I know a lot of people think the opposite and don't think too highly of talking to "strangers on the internet". Thoughts?

No not really. I mean if I know who they are, then no it isn't. I mean internet friends can also be there for you.

The only thing that's weird is to call them "internet friends" instead of "friends". It doesn't matter whether I met someone online or in person-- friends are friends. :)

This. The only problem is when ALL of your friends are based online - I would take that as a sign to get out a little more.

Internet friends to me implies you don't know them that well and have maybe chatted a few times online with them and in that case yea I probably would see it as a little strange to put them over you friends IRL, but there is nothing to say you cant make regular friends online. I know I have and I wouldn't think it weird to put those friends over others now and then.

Not really. Then again, I wouldn't call my friends I met online my Internet friends. :P The Internet has a ton of sites where you can talk to others just as well as offline locations. I don't see nothing bad about it.

Nothing wrong with it. I find it more weird to refer to them as "internet friends." Friends are friends, regardless of where or how you met them.

I don't have a problem with it. Although I wouldn't call them internet friends though, that seems rude.

u know, for me it's way harder to make friends online than in real life cus all of the sites I visit and other stuff are all in english. And because i'm not very good with the language sometimes I tend to sound like a douchbag or arrogant but is just that I can't find the words to make my statements sound friendlier.

But I don't find having internet friends weird.

Nah, there's nothing wrong with having internet friends. Friends are friends. We can make them wherever we go. It's up to you how you want to prioritize your social excursions as well. I love my IRL friends very much, and I love my internet friends very much. I'd say that I balance the two pretty well. I go out with IRL friends when I can (often on the weekends), and I chat with both IRL friends and internet friends through other means (Facebook, IRC, text messages, etc.) when I can.

Not at all. It's pretty awesome, I would want to keep in touch with a couple here on GS, and on my PS3 friend list.

As a matter of fact, I'm keeping touch with one friend from GS.

I don't find it weird to have internet friends. I do find it weird if all you have are internet friends. There's no substitute for communicating and interacting with live people in person.

If you spend too much time with computer friends, that's probably a cue to turn the computer off and return to the real world.

Me? I usually make friends in real life. Then and only then they become my internet friends. I'm a natural Doubting Thomas when it comes to so-called internet friends I've never met in person. I'll be cordial and all. But, that's still not the same as being friends.

If you have good friends IRL, it would be a little weird to ditch them in favor of online contacts, but otherwise I don't think it's strange at all to have internet friends.

My Internet friends are usually more desirable than my IRL friends. But I've always preferred large communities to small, intimate groups anyway. I need to be in the heart of the action.

No it's not weird to venture out online and develop relationships with people. Why limit your friend options towards your direct community anyways?

Absolutely agreed with this.

I think some older folk might not see it that way, but only because of the environment they were brought up in. As the world becomes more and more interconnected, and younger people who've always been in such an environment start becoming the norm, I think such "non face-to-face" relationships will be increasingly common and socially acceptable.
Hopefully that made sense, and wasn't just a pile of gibberish :P
For me, it's weird... that's why i don't have any internet friends. And i don't need them, i have two best friends, about 7-8 good friends that i hang out with and many acquaintances, people i say hi to every time i see them and have an occasional chitchat. I'm not really a popular guy but i'm really satisfied with my "social situation".
