Do you think life is pointless?

Thoughts?

I think it's pointless when I'm very angry or depressed, which is about...er...50-70% of the time.:P

Of course not. And anyone who says it is is looking at the wrong things. Focus too much on the negatives and everything else becomes negative.

I think that life is indeed pointless and that there is no universal purpose to life. People may choose to attach meaning to their own lives, which is fine, but I don't believe that there is an absolute meaning to life. You can make your own if you wish, but it's pointless in the end. That's just how I feel about it. I'm sure to some people this sounds depressing, but it's not necessarily meant to be.

Life is too fun to be pointless, life is to experience; emotions, flavors, sights, sensations.

I completely agree with this view. It does sound depressing, but it's just being realistic.

I absolutely do not think that life is pointless. As one person said, the chief end of man is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever!

I think that making people happy/being happy in general is enough to make life not pointless. People that always go around saying that everything is pointless/no meaning tend to be people nobody wants to hangout with and are pretty annoying.

Like I said, you can choose to attach your OWN meaning to life, but there is no absolute meaning. It's essentially pointless, but that doesn't stop people from participating in life and/or creating their own purposes, like the example you gave. Also, in response to your last part, like I said, this view isn't necessarily depressing or negative.

I gained a sense of appreciation for life, and everything about it in 2007. I was wounded in Iraq from an IED, and was MEDEVAC back to the US. I was stuck in a wheelchair for nearly seven months. Anyone that doesn't appreciate life, is missing out. I can't even begin to tell you how much it opened up my eyes, and all the adventures you'll go through.

Those who view life as pointless can still appreciate life...and some of those who don't view life as pointless might not appreciate it. I don't think that the two have anything to do with each other.

Hm, but why would a meaning have to be universal in order for it to render life not pointless?

I mean, if a person does find his own meaning in life, then its not pointless.

So (correcting myself here slightly too), life imo is potentially meaningful. And that meaning is a personal issue. Not necessarily a universal one.

And to pseudo-intellectualise a bit; perhaps there is a universal meaning in life: for all of us to find our individual meanings! D:

And hi. :P

iBear-

I used to think leading a happy life used to be the meaning of life too. But then I realize how easy being happy is. Now I'm like "Naw, this can't be it, it's too simplistic." My POV now is that there is no point, there doesn't have to be. If you need a reason to continue living, then that is sad in itself.

Depends on the mood I am in but generally I feel that life is kinda pointless unless you have something to live for at that moment.

It is pointless to those who ascribe that meaning to it. However, I in no way believe that is the meaning that has been defined for us by God. King Solomon wrote the book of Ecclesiastes about this very topic. The conclusion to the book is stated in 12:13, "Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man."

No, ofcourse not. Life has a very clear, apparent "intention", albeit not cognitive as we understand it or have conceptualized it yet. A meaning talks about the end to a start, and life is definitely "trying" something here, even if what triggers the attempt can be boiled down to mere algorithms. Algorithms are ideas with an end too. Even if we argue that life is not doing anything but responding to X because Y makes it so because that is what Y is and that is the function of Y when paired with X and nothing beyond that, it still expresses, because we perceive. Argue that our subjective perception does not reflect reality, thus it serves no argument when perceiving the expressed (what is expressed talks about an end from a start too), but it will always reflect the natural, in one way or the other, and that is no less significant or relevant than anything else of the natural.

I don't mean it in a negative way, but yes life is pointless. I don't mean "I may as well kill myself, this is pointless", I just mean there literally is no pointto being alive. Sure, once someone's born they set their own goals and then have a point to be alive. But initially, life is pointless.

Life is pointless in the grand scheme of things, everything is, but most people like to attach some point, or aim to life. I like to say the point in life is to enjoy it while it lasts, so the point in life is very relative, like to the Sun, there is no point in life, it will continue to burn and grow, then collapse on itself.

Inherently, yes, it is pointless as "point" varies from person to person and on a universal scale, a single life (or even the collective entity of the human species) is basically negligible.

I think that life has as much of a point as you give to it. Do I think that there is some ultimate goal of mankind? Not really, no. There's a short story I read - can't remember by who, maybe Stephen King - titled "All That You Love Will Be Carried Away". That pretty much sums it up in my mind; in the end, it'll all be gone anyways. But even if that's true and it's all just a way to kill time while killing ourselves, I think we have a natural inclination to attach some value to our meaningless existence; we'd all commit suicide if we didn't attach some value - no matter how arbitrary - to the life that we live.
