Do you think music always represents your "social status"?

This is sort of an open topic... do you think that the music you listen to reflects your "social status"? The reason I quote that is because I'm not familiar with all the terms... terms like "emo" or "goth" which seem to be made up by teenagers to mean "someone who cuts themselves" and "someone who dresses in all black".

But it's not just the definitions, its music... there's "emo" bands and crap like that... "mainstream". So im wondering... do you think that the music you listen to reflects what kind of person you are? Can a certain type of person listen to music that is completely contradictory to the common stereotype associated with them? For example... a Christain (yes, I know its a religion not a social status, but I dont have many examples) listening to slayer, or a "goth" listening to Justin Timberlake (lol)?

Sorry if this topic makes no sense....

No, if you listen to 60's and 70's music, are you considered a hippie?

It's a personal taste, not a social status definer.

Just because I listen to japanese anime theme songs and some random J-POP doesn't mean I'm Japanese :P

I think no. If it did, everyone who listened to mainstream would be "socially equal." And we all know how it really is...

By the way... I'm not implying that by listening to something you have to be labeled (the 60's hippie example was good). But theres tonsof people who do, so i was just looking to see how everyone else thought about it.

Never use the bands you listen to or others listen to as an indication of social stature. It's smug to do so and smug to think you have better taste than anyone either.

Well, the genre I'm listening to most (Pop punk?) is sort of resembling who I am, so slightly.

No...and what about those that listen to a variety? I listen to almost every genre regularly. Music represents what you've become exposed to in life..social status...no.

It can be a sort of social status definer... in general the "emo type" people in my school listen to "emo" music... the chavs/****heads listen to rap....

I listen to a variety of music though... mainstream really with some heavy/blackmetal.
