Well do you?

The stereotypes I hear, at least in my area, I think are true to some extent.

One being, how people say "Black people are aggressive or ghetto or the "Gangstas"" and that kind of stuff.

Now me being black and not like that at all I know that isnt true. Well not completely at least. I mean most people that Ive seen that are dressed all ghetto-ly with thier pants sagging and stuff and or just the more aggresive ones and the ones who always playfight and stuff are mostly black people. There are alot of mexicans like that in my area but still more black people though.

Me and my friends joke around and make racial jokes at eachother all the time and I know that no stereotype is 100% true.

Another stereotype I hear alot is that all ice cream truck drivers are mexican.

Now in my experience of seeing ice cream truck drivers, they were ALL mexican from what I remember. I always look to see to lol. Of course I know not all of them are mexican but most of them are definitley. At least around where I live thats for sure.

And also I hear people say that the gardeners that do people's front lawns and mows them and whatnot are mexican. Now Ive seen a couple of whites and like one black but still 95% of the people I see who work on people's front lawns are mexican.

another one I hear alot is that black girls are always loud and obnoxious. Ok there are are like 25% of them at my school that are kinda loud but not "ghetto acting" or just normal but the rest of them are really loud and ya know.

Also one I super believe is that black people always get these wierd complicated, ghetto, odd names. Like really im not hating on the names or anything but its really funny to me actually. Its like I hear new names everyday with them like Le'Shawnquisa or Le-nae (which is actually pronounced Luh-dash-nay). Not saying all black people are named like that, of course I'd know that because my name is Lucas and im black, but yeah. I dont know anyone of any other race that is named like that.

Well yeah are there any stereotypes that you believe are true to a good extenet?

P.S.

Sorry if you dont like my use of the word "ghetto" Its just that where I live people use that all the time to mean a certain thing and I'd think someone might get mad at me for using that word in the way that I did.

And also please no one get offended by this in anyway. Im not being racist at all im just saying.

EDIT

Ok I well do you think the stereotypes that you here in YOUR area are true to a good extent in YOUR area in which you live?

I guess different areas have different stereotypes.

i live in a hispanic populated area and I have never seen a mexican ice cream truck driver in my life. where i live they are all of indian descent. I do not believe in stereotypes, you can call anything a stereotype and find fact or fiction within it. Such as calling black people thugs or criminals is ignorant because there are just as many white people who are thugs and criminals. Its just that since that is the stereotype people focus/notice more on when they are followed through in everyday life.

I don't know, I'm not one to judge, but I think we live in a politically correct environment where every little thing is taken as offensive and such. People need to chill.

Well thats kind of a dumb reason to say none of them are true. I mean first of all that is a pretty dumb stereotype in the first place. And I believe its "All black people like fried chicken" and of course not all of them do, but most of them do. So I believe it to some extent. But it is a dumb stereotype because MOST people like fried chicken. And the stereotype is about black people liking fried chicken so just because you're not black and you like fried chicken means the stereotype is false. People dont say "Only black people love fried chicken"

Are they true, no

do they usaully have some basis in truth, yes

To be specific,

Most stero types are bssed on cultural trends/paterns found in a race/ethnicity's culture.

For example, blacks liking fried chicken

This has a historic root in old african american history.

After the civil war most blacks in the south lived ***** lives to say the least,

There food was often what they could peace together on penny paychecks

Fried chicken was a cheap, efficient meal they could afford, and quicky became part of the culture(same with other foods)

To this day, fried chicken is still a part of southern blacks food culture, and very popular,

that said not every african american likes fried chicken, and non-african americans can love it to

Though I prefer grilled:P

also to specify/not confuse, i'm white

on a side note, 9999

not likely going to post again tonight;)

There are definitely some people in this world who fit certain stereotypes, but by in large, I think it is best to judge the individual as a *gasp* individual.

Otherwise, relying on stereotypes, to me, seems a good way for stupid people to not actually do any real thinking.

I will say the stereotype of the lazy Mexican is especially funny, when there was a study done that found Mexico work the longest hours.

I think that the problem with the idea of a few racial sterotypes being true is that it implies something or other is completely true for a certain group of people. That's really the problem with stereotypes, by definition it says that one charactaristic is universally true for everyone and that is just never the case.

Stereotypes are from people who lack real life experience and exposure so they just go by what they hear from others instead. They need more criticle thinking skills....

I work as a barista in a coffee shop and will say that there does exist certain largely true stereotypes regarding what types of drinks people like. At the least in my experience these are true at the least 50% of the time (some more, some less) 1. Middle-aged Indian males love extra hot chai tea lattes, cappuccinos, and banana walnut bread. 2. Middle-aged white ladies like skinny vanilla lattes. 3. Young white teenage girls like vanilla bean, double chocolate chip, and java chip frappuccinos. 4. Over-weight black people like white mocha with a couple (or 12) equal. 5. Hispanics and black people like extra caramel, caramel frappuccinos. 6. People who usually get their drinks from McDonalds, while not an ethnicity, like "caramel mocha frappes." 7. Young Indian children apparently like green tea frappuccinos. 8. Women with British accents like earl grey tea. 9. Middle-aged or older white men like to ask for items that my store do not sell as a joke. French fries for example. 10. Asians (Japanese, Chinese, Koren, etc.) like iced coffee and iced americanos. As a note, I am making generalizations that are very often though not always true regarding the types of beverages people like. Believe it or not but a person's ethnicity and age often plays a factor in drink recommendation for indecisive customers.

None. Sure there may be individuals that display x but that is not common because of race. Culture has more to do with similarities TBH.

yes, they are mostly true, that's how they became stereotypes in the first place.

i would bet money that most black americans like rap music, and most white americans like rock music.

i would also bet that most black americans often eat chicken.

they also sometimes have ridiculous names.

the asians are well disciplined in school.

the hispanics work a lot of positions that involve cleaning.

and at the retail store i work at, whenever someone is trying to coupon scam us, it's always, ALWAYS an Indian person. i have never encountered someone trying to coupon scam, that wasn't Indian.

Interestingly the biggest audience for rap music is white males.

Chicken is eaten by many people of diverse race.

Names are only ridiculous when it isn't one's culture.

Asians have a variety of behavior as they have a variety of individuals.

Hispanics and others work in cleaning. Hispanics also work other professions. You are confusing illegal immigration with and entirety of a people.

yes, they are mostly true, that's how they became stereotypes in the first place.

i would bet money that most black americans like rap music, and most white americans like rock music.

i would also bet that most black americans often eat chicken.

they also sometimes have ridiculous names.

the asians are well disciplined in school.

the hispanics work a lot of positions that involve cleaning.

You are confusing illegal immigration with and entirety of a people.

yeah a lot of white people like rap, but walk up to a random black guy and ask him if he likes rap/hip hop, he'll probaby say yes.

true, i love chicken myself, but it's no mystery that black people love chicken! watch thishttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8pyW6w5B7Awnot only is it f***ing hilarious, but you'll see that all the people are black

i don't care what culture someone is from, a name like Octavia or Lamanda or Shawntavius is ridiculous.

i'll give you the points about asians and hispanics

i'm not trying to sound racist here, by the way, just going on topic with the thread.
