[QUOTE="needled24-7"]

yes, they are mostly true, that's how they became stereotypes in the first place.

i would bet money that most black americans like rap music, and most white americans like rock music.

i would also bet that most black americans often eat chicken.

they also sometimes have ridiculous names.

the asians are well disciplined in school.

the hispanics work a lot of positions that involve cleaning.

needled24-7

Interestingly the biggest audience for rap music is white males.

Chicken is eaten by many people of diverse race.

Names are only ridiculous when it isn't one's culture.

Asians have a variety of behavior as they have a variety of individuals.

Hispanics and others work in cleaning. Hispanics also work other professions. You are confusing illegal immigration with and entirety of a people.

yeah a lot of white people like rap, but walk up to a random black guy and ask him if he likes rap/hip hop, he'll probaby say yes.

true, i love chicken myself, but it's no mystery that black people love chicken! watch thishttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8pyW6w5B7Awnot only is it f***ing hilarious, but you'll see that all the people are black

i don't care what culture someone is from, a name like Octavia or Lamanda or Shawntavius is ridiculous.

i'll give you the points about asians and hispanics

i'm not trying to sound racist here, by the way, just going on topic with the thread.

Really because this does sound to be pretty racist to me....

The premise of the thread is flawed. I can take a glance at any group of people and then make the erroneous conclusion that all people in said group like x or act like y. And every time I see someone that I would put in such group act as such I would have reinforced my stereotype. But that doesn't mean all members are like that. And, in fact, I'd probably see more that do not than do but I wouldn't be looking for that behavior because it does not reinforce my preconceived notions. So it goes unnoticed and not categorized. If one uses generalizations and stereotypes to group people one notices that which reinforces such. Culture is more a determinate of similarities than race. But then culture tends to be the similarities between people. Take two individuals of the same race and give them completely different cultures and they will be completely different. Now take two individuals of different races and give them the same culture....and you'll have two similar people in regard to cultural norms.

(i tried to copy/paste the definition but gamespot screwed up, so that's why i just put the link)

i didn't say anything about any race being lesser or superior to another race. i just made comments about what i have observed.

the mexican ice cream truck driver thing is because those are inmigrants (not saying if legal or illegal) and they need a job, they dont have the requirements for a formal job so they just end up taking up the "easy" jobs.

of course not ALL of the people are going to be a certain way, but i don't think it's unreasonable to make an assumption based on previous experiences or observations.

Yes, here's the thing I notice you have MW3 in your sig (I am also a fan) but the game has alot of stereotypes about it's players. People say that COD players are all either little racist kids or obese "frat boys". That's what people say about the players (At least in SW anyway). Do you think those stereotypes are true? I hope not because they arn't.

Also I don't know what your ethnicity is, but I'm pretty sure you wouldn't like someone making generalisations about you. I know I don't.

I think that some, to many are true in the broadest sense that they are applied. but it's best to take people on an individual basis. Treat people as you get to know them because there are exceptions.

Sometimes partially. I hear Asian parents are strict on education - or rather they place a greater emphasis on education. My mom was pretty strict on me (more than 3 Bs and I get punished) and my mom's parents had 'forced' their kids into medical school.

people say that about COD players because it is what they have observed in their experiences. i went to the midnight release and i will tell you there were a lot of bros there. the cod-bros and the 13 year old kids yelling into their mics on xbox live are the most vocal ones, so that is what people see/hear the most, which is where the stereotype comes from. (i realize this could be said about the generalizations i made before. maybe i was wrong to make those generalizations, but it is still true that those generalizations are what i have observed the most).

i am white, and i fit into a lot of the generalizations about white people. i like camping, classic rock, and i can't really think of any other white people stereotypes but i'm sure there a lot that are true for me. and i wouldn't mind if someone made a joke that is racist towards white people. i enjoy sharing jokes and to be honest, i would like to know more white jokes, there's already a lot of jokes about other races but i don't really know any about white people.

My take is that essentially all stereotypes are and/or were at some point in time true at a certain time and place and may or may not hold truth now or here.

I'll list some white stereotypes that I hear Whites are scared of Mexicans and blacks White men are pushovers White people love the fruit and salad bar White men have small Johnsons White people wear shorts and open toe sandals in the winter White men can't jump White men are feminine White people are corny Are any of these stereotypes true?Bucked20

As the OT resident white guy and caucasion studies expert, I'll weigh in:

All of those are true, though the feminine thing goes away with age. By the age of retirement, we are the most manly.

i am white, not rich, and am powerless. that kinda kills the whole white men conspiracy theory, but if the rich white men wish to take me in and make me one of them i am quite welcoming, and not afraid to accept that i am a prostitute and will do what they ask if the price is right. thats right i would be a straight gay hooker if the price were right.

There are some white men like that. I know some black people who love eating fried chicken and act all "gangster" all the time.

The are people who fit into stereotypes but they don'trepresent a whole race

No, none of them are trueweezyfb
Yes, there are true racial stereotypes. In the area where I live, many natives come from a fairly terrible home life, and as a result, tend to be a bit of a problem in society, and sometimes fairly disfunctional. Of course, this isn't because they're native. This is because natives were the demographic that had their lives ruined by the Residential Schools, interrupting the flow of parent to child life lessons, leaving an entire generation adrift. So, I guess it's more a demographic stereotype that happens to fit a race, as opposed to a true racial stereotype.

There are some surveys that have proved there are racial stereotypes do exist. But there are some logical explanations to these (and no it has nothing to do with intelligence or how healthy a certain race is). In general there are things such as evolution, and historical events that lead people to this day to act as they do. Also as previous people had said, there must be some truth in stereotypes for them to exist.

well lets see~ im white sooo,

im not afraid of mexicans or black people (maybe cause i used to live in east oakland)

im no pushover

i do love the salad bar, but hate fruit

im not small in the package department

i totally wear shorts and flip flops in the middle of winter

i cant jump for crap

im not too feminine

i can be super corny

i guess some are true. when i lived in oakland i couldnt go see a movie because like 75% of the people were yelling at the screen the whole movie, so imo some sterotypes are totally true~

Yes and no. Yes, in the sense that due to cultural dispositions some individuals will act a certain way (ex. I'm Italian and I'm a huge food and soccer nut, plus I believe in a lot of things that are stereotypically Italian (Roman Catholic, physical discipline for kids, etc.)) However, I do not believe that these predispositions are full-proof nor do they accurate represent a populace (ex. I hate speghetti, I know plenty individuals of African descent that are much smart that some Caucasians, etc.)

Not all people of a certain race or ethnicity will fit a stereotype but they were derived from observation from a certain percentage of that population. For example, I'm mostly white but am a quarter Asian. They always say that Asians are smarter and good at math and such. That's because many Asian kids are pushed harder than their counterparts to succeed in certain areas so they do for the most part. Also, white people have no rhythm and can't dance. Many white people choose not to learn how to dance and therefore suck at it. Nobody stated that all people of that race can or can't or do something and also say it's just beause they are/do, etc. People just observe a trend and just attribute it to certain people, but don't look into the reasons why that happens. Maybe it's cultural or maybe it's just out of laziness or familial reasons rather than just being genetic.

Not being racist in any way just stating fact,

But just about every stereo type asscoiated with aboriginal people in Australia is true,

For example most are criminals is what is commonly said over here well,

Aboriginals only make up 5% of the population here down under but make up over 50% of the prison population.

Most aren't true, but there are those who ironically and incidentally spout their known racial stereotypes.

Another thing I've always wondered is that is there such a thing as a "positive stereotype?"

Well, I think the stereotype of blacks liking fried chicken has some truth to it. Not that I blame them, because fried chicken is delicious! :D

Lol I forgot I was going to add that one. Im not exactly sure where that comes from because pretty much everyone likes fried chicken sooo Its more of a Human stereotype than a black person stereotype lol.

There is a lot of truth to stereotypes. I live in NZ so here's a few.....Maoris/Islanders love rap,hip hop but hate rock, metal, in fact they call it "white boy music". Most white people are skinny (hence skinny white boy). There are so so so so many more that are almost 100% spot on everytime you look at a race but I dont want to get into a racism war.

They are useless to apply. While some groups may have some shared characteristics, people are individuals. You cant assume anything.

so racial stereotypes are just like the BMI, meant to generalize the population based on, often, poor subjective reasoning with seemingly random benchmarks of comparison, also completely useless to use on any level but expecially useless on the individual level?

Perhaps, but I am an electronic toothbrush capable of generating incredible rpms and fighting plaque and gingivitis. None of which the simple label of toothbrush could ever hope to describe.

Pretty much. The trouble with stereotypes is they almost become self propagating. A lot of them are incredibly subjective and so people will see what they want to see.

Stereotypes are from people who lack real life experience and exposure so they just go by what they hear from others instead. They need more criticle thinking skills....

Care to enlighten us? My experience has been that most are absolutely rooted in truth. They wouldn't exist on such a large scale otherwise. I can walk down the street and point out 10 people who exemplify racial stereotypes. They are real.
