At the moment, no. The Talibans are growing stronger and they are hard to beat. Will the additional troops help? Hopefully.
No.... What was done in Iraq and Afghanistan has been one of the main reasons why through the years groups like the Taliban has flourished.. We are doing the exact same thing with the insurgeants of Iraq that we did with the Taliban decades ago.. Pay them off, arm them and act like their our friends when they are not. sSubZerOo

I don't think its that.. The United States and the west has never cared very much for the Middle East aside from being politically and economically dependent on the west.. As long as that oil keeps flowing and nothing threatens that, they really could care less..They're ignorant.supergamer514

You're so wrong. Here's the thing... nothing is happening there. People are dying, and dying, and dying... yet nothing is getting done. The United States has lost approxamately 12,000 soldiers, while Afghansitan has lost close to 90,000 fghters. We are tearing them to shreds, but still nothing is getting done.
No one ever wins in war, it always results with alot of resources and lives lost on both sides, and nothing practical gained.
DoomZaW
Exactly. The real winners aren't in Afghanistan, fighting, they're sitting on their butts, watching the cash pile up. I'm talking about weapon manufacturers and oil companies, of course.
We aren't winning the war on terror.. We are the terrorists.I think we're winning the war on Terror. It can never Truly be won though. There will always be another Al Qaeda.

You can't ever say "no". The U.S. is not losing the war at all. Nothing is happening, but if anyone is actually "winning" it's the U.S., as we have gotten far less casualties and we also have far more protection and planning as well as training. We have M-16's and heavy duty Kevlar armor that can survive a barrage of fire, they have half-broken AK-47's and robes. We have tanks, air support, helicopters, radar, and artillery, they have trucks and radios. They will never be able to beat us. The only thing that is beating the U.S. Army right now is there selves.

Please tell me you're joking... ? You should move elsewhere if that is your view on the U.S. We may not be the best country in the world in terms of a lot of scattered things, but we are not terrorists. You should be ashamed of yourself.

The Afghanistan army is on our side. We are killing people who are terrorists, and rescuing Afghanistan citizens. You're wrong.
Ah new to OT. You must learn everything the US does is wrong. Note: I'm not saying that. It's the pervading sentiment unfortunately.[

*sigh* no... we are not... At best we are comming out at a small loss, most realistic, we are comming out with a very big loss...
A war is alot of things, popularity, arms, power, and morale... Riddle me this people, how much of this do we have on our side? The entirety of the middle east (except those bought by us) Dispises us, you can never win when the general population does not like you, or just dont care.
Moral is pretty darn low, for every day that passes they grow in number, we do not, and they can not be distinguished from civilians, we are, so we cant really do much fighting, it is not a real war, there are not 2 sides standing on each front, it is a hidden war, strike and flee... atleast on thier part, and we can not deploy the same tactics, unless we level the entire country.
in terms of power we are ahead, better weapons, better armor, but raw power is utterly meaningless if you have no clue where to aim it. We are fighting a way of thinking, not a group of people, so we have all this nice hardware, and pretty much nowhere to aim it.
BEtter to undermine thier reasoning, which we are doing SLOWLY, and often we experience setbacks, we cant really move troops, if we set up the ideals that we haave, and move on, it will be destroyied as soon as we are out of range.
In some twisted way this really is more like Vietnam... atleast we did get some valuable knowlage of how NOT to act from that conflict, but its the exact same problem that we are facing again. invisible enemies...

We're winning in some parts of Afghanastan and losing in others. In order to truly win it will take us decades (not a mere 18 months). The mountain terrain in Afghanistan is terrible for us though. It would be easier to win in Iraq and then face a demoralized enemy in Afghanistan/Pakistan.

because once the US got in Iraq, it was all Iraq news and Afgan was forgotten in the media a bit. There's a war in Afghanistan?
Only kidding. The media has barely mentioned it in the time we've been there.

Maybe the Americans should put themselves in Afghanistan's shoes. You cant force democracy on every single nation. In Islam its a single Caliph appointed by the people with a bunch of advisors. If the people don't like the Caliph they can remove him from rule. It should be that , theres Caliph when he dies, his son becomes a Caliph, and so on. You really cant force them to use the West's way of appointing rulers. But unfortunately Taliban is a bit extreme, they twisted the idea of Islamic rule into a bunch of vile extremist none sense.7addadsterI don't think being in the local's shoes really would make much of a difference. It is not a nation where those in charge has derived much power from the consent of the people, quite the opposite.
Having said that I agree in some places you just can't establish a democracy from the outside no matter how good your intentions might be.

territory
resources
political goals
moral goals
protection
etc, etc.
I dont like war either, and I wish we did not need it, but until the rest of the world changes we need to wage it.
Yes...............The US and NATO are winning, just like the Soviets, juts like the British. We are winning (i'm canadian) the battles, but losing the war.
For every home built there is US pilot who rather than return his payload to base drops it on first thing he sees
for every act of kindness from US troops there is an idiot who shoots first asks questions latter
for every American life lost 10 taliban lives are lost but also tens of civilian lives
sadly US generals dont understand that this is not conventional war
US Army is fighting against guerrilla using tactics designed to counter Russian or Chinese Attack
So are you winning no not really ,in all honesty you are getting your ass kicked by ppl who never lost to anybody in their history
and as long as you think that good ol US of A cant do no wrong this war will be reality of poor Americans
