What "war"? Not only is the US, and other NATO countries losing in Afghanistan, but it is impossible to "win" against terrorism.

I'm starting to have my doubts about Afghanistan. I thought the argument for staying there was good, but now what they're saying is that there are no insurgents in Afghanistan and they have all moved to Pakistan, which is exactly what we heard about Afghanistan after we went to Iraq. I'm just really starting to wonder if this isn't turning into war for the sake of war, and if we wouldn't be doing more to curb terrorism by just pulling out altogether, perhaps then we wouldn't be seen so much as foreign invaders.

Depends on what we are fighting for. If the war only has to do with disrupting and ultimately defeating Al Qaeda in the region, then we are winning. If we are fighting for a sustainable, democratic Afghan government, then no, we are not winning, although that doesn't mean it can't be won.

Well, the initial goal was to capture Bin Laden, which is something I doubt will be accomplished soon. So in the meantime, it does feel like a war without any ultimate goals as some people already said that terrorism cannot be entirely beaten.

Well, does that mean we're endlessly going to be chasing Al-Queda around the region? If we're spending money and lives chasing them for an infinite amount of time are we really winning?

It depends on how one thinks the war should be fought. Either you do counter-terrorism, which is very cheap and doesn't take that many troops to do, and it basically just consists of hunting down Al Qaeda and either capturing them or killing them. Or you could do counter-insurgency/nation building, which is much more expensive and would require a lot more troops. Right now we are sort of doing nation building-lite.

Fighting Al Qaeda and any other absurd, backwards organization that sees itself at war with civilization doesn't have to be expensive, it's just that right now we are fighting it in an expensive manner because we are doing much more than merely fighting Al Qaeda.

Wow, sad you dont know how to spell it, and think there is only America in it to win it. Gate to beak it to you, but Canada's role is bigger and more important in Afghanistan. Why do you think we Canadians are in command of your American troops? If anyone wins its Canada (even though its the West actually to be technical).

The war is entering a new phase. The first phase was what began in October 2001, when we drove the Taliban out of the country with the help of the Northern Alliance, and established a government that was widely supported (or at least favored over the Taliban). I'd say that phase was very successful. The next phase now is defending the new government while ensuring that government's legitimacy, as the Taliban and Al Qaeda attempt to gain a grip on the Afghan government again as the U.S. seeks to withdraw itself. This second phase will also be won provided NATO does its part to protect the government and the President doesn't give in to defeatism at home.

I think we're winning the war on Terror. It can never Truly be won though. There will always be another Al Qaeda.

We aren't winning the war on terror.. We are the terrorists.

Please tell me you're joking... ? You should move elsewhere if that is your view on the U.S. We may not be the best country in the world in terms of a lot of scattered things, but we are not terrorists. You should be ashamed of yourself.

The US is worse than most terrorist groups. I don't think I can count on both hands the number of democratically elected government America has had a hand in toppling where as I can't think of any democratic government that have been toppled by a terrorist group.

its not a war. war would require us fighting a nation's army, that we are not doing. its counter insurgency. it can never be won. the fact that we are there in the first place means that we are loosing. loosing lives ( both of our own troops and any civilian casualties) , resources and money.

short answer: we are loosing everything and winning nothing.

I'm not joking. Invasion of IRAQ? Invasion of Afghanistan.. and for what we didn't even get Bin Laden.. the guy who did this.. instead we destabilized a country and further contributed to the suffering of it's population.

Yeah, I mean they'd be so much better off if we'd just let the Taliban fire rockets into schools just because they were teaching little girls other things besides the Koran and homemaking.

For every home built there is US pilot who rather than return his payload to base drops it on first thing he sees

for every act of kindness from US troops there is an idiot who shoots first asks questions latter

for every American life lost 10 taliban lives are lost but also tens of civilian lives

sadly US generals dont understand that this is not conventional war

US Army is fighting against guerrilla using tactics designed to counter Russian or Chinese Attack

So are you winning no not really ,in all honesty you are getting your ass kicked by ppl who never lost to anybody in their history

and as long as you think that good ol US of A cant do no wrong this war will be reality of poor Americans

All the Taliban and Al Qaeda have to do to win a resounding victory is exist. America can't win and should pull out immediately. It was stupid to launch an country wide invasion when all we should have been doing was capturing Bin Laden. There was a complete strategic failing that can be entirely blamed on Pentagon leadership and Rumsfeld. I don't understand why we care so much about sending little girls to school in Afghanistan and get all pissed off about sending poor fellow Americans to the doctor.

You're so wrong. Here's the thing... nothing is happening there. People are dying, and dying, and dying... yet nothing is getting done. The United States has lost approxamately 12,000 soldiers, while Afghansitan has lost close to 90,000 fghters. We are tearing them to shreds, but still nothing is getting done.

You have no idea what your talking about and stop picking numbers at random the us has lost no where near 12,000 soldiers

They either kill each other, or they wise up before the all die, this was no one else can say anyone else killed them.

Or let Russia go in there and do em in.

America will never 'win' the war in Afghanistan.. it is up to Afghan people to end the Taliban. But America is helping them greatly yes, and keeping pressure on the Taliban.

My brother is in the Royal Marines, and he told us that half the time they'll capture someone who they KNOW is fighting for the Taliban, but are forced to let them go because of UN rules. Basically, America and British forces have very strict rules - the taliban dont. So in that regard it's a tough war to win.

I don't see any reason why the Taliban would ignite a massive nuclear war. Unlike Al Qaeda, the members of the Taliban would rather live than die for some crazy, global jihad.

Dan Rather went to Afghanistan and reported, and was on the daily show yesterday. It was very surprising when he said there is barely any true Taliban left in Afghanistan. Instead, they fled to Pakistan. They just cross the border and go back.

 I highly doubt that. I think it's the exact opposite - that they understand perfectly that it isn't conventional war. but, even if they do, it doesn't change the fact that it's a very elaborate and complicated conflict. maybe they just don't have the ability. that doesn't mean that they don't understand the situation, however.

That can be true, but not always. WW2 had some practical results.

It plunged the world into a 60 year long near nuclear conflict that was responsible for more deaths and hardship than both world wars combined?

So where exactly are those 30,000 troops going? Or maybe you are talking about George W. Bush.
