I found it more difficult to start off playing than the saxophone, but it might be a bit easier once you get the smallest basics down (It took me a bit to properly hold a pick and strum it without losing grip, whereas I could make a clear tone through the reed on the saxophone right away. :P), because of the widespread use of guitar tabs and such.

Getting good at it seems a bit tougher than at least the saxophone. I never progressed far with the saxophone, but different types of muting and preventing ringing on electric guitar took a bit.

There's a wall you'll hit without having a teacher. The wall is the difference being able to play entire solos. It requires a lot of dedication. I can do a lot of stuff otherwise.

It's ok, it seems so easy to me now that I've been playing for awhile though. Brass instruments are harder IMO. When I first started playing trombone I had the hardest time even playing a note. (High ones are pain the ass at the beginning) When I was a kid I played piano and that wasn't too bad. I quit though since I hated the music. I can still read something and play it given the time, but I didn't enjoy it like I do trombone and guitar.

Just started to teach myself Guitar. Some people say it's difficult. But I really don't think it's that hard.

DmadFearmonger

depends on the kind of music and how you learn things and also personal preference. If you cant read sheet music than its easier to use TABS. If you take the time to learn sheet music it will be easier than tabs. If your playing a campfire song with a youthgroup, or playing Classical music. Its all about what your learning and how your learning it.

Easy to learn. Hard to master.comeonthehoops
This is the best explanation. I can teach myself a whole song but i still cant play any of the tricky solos. Knowing how to play a song and being able to play it are also very different, its not just learning the music, its developing the abilities that are required to play the music.

having played for 15 years i can say its not that hard, you just have to take the time to learn and play properly.... which most people don't. theres lots of little things to grasp that the majority of bedroom guitarists don't get (like economy of motion, tension, hand positioning etc)

2. You probably don't know anything about time signatures(or any music theory for that matter). For example: 3-1 x 4 means hit a certain note 3 times then hit a different note once but then you have to repeat this process 4 times one after another.

broken_bass_bin

That has got literally nothing to do with time signature. Or even music theory. Or even tab. In fact, it doesn't make any sense why anyone would transcribe anything in that way.

This haha. WTH is that person talking about?

I spent like 3 hours with an acoustic and I can play the intro riff to Dying in Your Arms by Trivium, just not quite fast enough. It wasn't that difficult. I'm getting an electric soon so I'll see how hard it really is.

Harder for some more than others, depends on how easily you learn new concepts and what not. It took me a while to break the musical learning barrier, same with learning languages. It's on the same side of the brain as learning languages and math, so I guess depending on how well you are at those might effect how quickly you learn how to plan instrument. It's a lot of patterns and even math when it comes to deep musical theory. I just play how I feel, I can't read a lick of written music except for a few basic notes.

depends if your playing classical guitar or that bs called electric.

to be any good at an instrument, you need a good private teacher.

So there has never been a good guitarist that didn't have a private teacher? I will give you that most great musicians have had formal training, but certainly not all. There is something called natural talent. When someone with talent has the patience and discipline to learn on their own, they can be just as good.

I play acoustic guitar, but I would also love to play electric. Anybody that closes themselves off to or denounces an instrument that can make beautiful music is missing the whole point of music.

i was generalizing to be honest but i just meant that if you had a private teacher, progress would increase immensely. Sure there are many great musicians that didnt have private teachers but the greatest(as far as i know) had them. The thing is, the electric guitar is a dumbed down guitar. it eliminates alot of the musical components like the ability to play loud and also playing with a pick which gives almost absolutely no advantage from fingering and also the strings are much closer and the frets are short in a way that its basically made to play simple chords easier.

The electric guitar is NOT a dumbed down version at all, I don't know why you're making a distinction like that. Most of the better guitarists around are well rounded in both and if you get a good grip on one, you can get a good grip on the other. They are different, one is not "better" than the other. The classical guitar is more diverse in terms of the style of music it's relegated to and allows for, like you said, ease in executing simpler chord forms, like arpeggios for instance. Electric guitars can do that too. They're not inferior in any way and take just as much skill to master. The electric guitar has progressed to a point where it's used for different sound styles. I find the soundscape and ambient styles they are able to pull off nowadays particularly impressive.

well yeah my statement was a little strait forward but if you have ever picked up a classical guitar you would know its about 2.5 timesg and realrs music is played all over the fret board. Allot of really famous rock stars were really good at classical guitar. Obviously if you playing twinkle twinkle little star on a classical guitar its going to be easier than playingthrough the fire and the flameson the electric. Most people in the states ,especially the youth and myself, prefer rock witch involves an electric guitar. I own an electric guitar, a classical guitar and a plane acoustic guitar. I prefer my acoustic guitar over all of them cause i like playing songs i can sing to and play chords at my church without the necessity of an amp and easily playable fret board. Its all about preference. No doubt there are some really hard electric guitar solos and riffs out there, butallot of people don't take into consideration that classical guitar is equally as hard to play if not harder.

Yeah, like I said, both are the same degree of difficulty depending on the music you're playing. Complex music is complex regardless of the instrument used.

As one of the users said, easy to learn, hard to master.

Once you get the gist of ot, you'll be able to play the chords and sing songs.

But if you want to play the guitar like some John Mayer dude, well, that's a different perspective.

A guitar generally is not that hard to play, I mean, you just pluck the strings or strum them you create sounds. :P

I think its hard.. i ve been teaching myself how to play for 2 years and i can barely play 2 songs and some chrods ;( The piano is much more easier!! I m gona try the violin after i master the guitar :pSolid_Tango

Really? I am going on 2 years now as well and I am writing my own riffs and all that. How did you start learning the guitar? The easiest way is to just learn tabs of songs, and then move on to more difficult tabs. I found Melodic Death Metal to be the most difficult to play.

The funny thing about John Mayer that many people don't know is this-- He is probably one of the top 15-20 blues/rock guitarists alive. He is a serious musician. Alot of his popular songs are fairly simple to play, as are most of the popular songs out there. You should look up some videos of him covering Clapton or SRV. He's for real.

You can learn to play a few basic songs after just a couple of months, but if you want to play something complex like Freebird or Master of Puppets, that'll take many years of practice.

I guess it really depends on what you want to play but mastering the guitar as in being able to play various styles of music and getting all techniques down perfectly is difficult and takes a lot of time and dedication.

The acoustic is harder to play than electric. But the way you play acoustic and electric are totally different. But learning guitar can be hard, it matters how much effort you put into it.

Huh, every time I pick up an acoustic I put the pick near the bridge and my hand resting ~on it, press my fingers on the strings and make sounds.. I kinda though this was the concept for all guitars, give or take the pick.

I can play the A chord and the D chord. Barely. I try switching between them while keeping rhythm, and I'm terrible. I've had the guitar about 3 weeks. Picked it up 2-3 times. I just have to train my fingers, they aren't use to bending in that way.

I can play the A chord and the D chord. Barely. I try switching between them while keeping rhythm, and I'm terrible. I've had the guitar about 3 weeks. Picked it up 2-3 times. I just have to train my fingers, they aren't use to bending in that way.Agent-Zero

All learning the guitar is is getting your fingers used to doing something that they're not used to doing. Practice can be intoxicating when you're just starting out, so find time to do it while you're watching a movie or with friends. Also, be sure to pick up the guitar for at least 5-15 minutes a day.

The chords I first learned were G and Cadd9, due to the fact that G is one of the harder beginner chords so it made the others easy, and you can switch pretty easily between G and Cadd9 so you won't have to play G over and over.

I had studied music for a long time before I picked up the guitar, so the theory behind it was nothing for me. (frets are half steps, intervals, what notes are in what chords, ect.)

But actually playing the guitar I find to be wicked difficult. Like oh my god, frustration. I dont play stringed instruments so mutingstrings and unmutting strings+ strumming, picking, holding down strings to playect.were really hard for me to pick up.

and barring chords/moveable chord positions kick my ass.

My instruments are voice and piano, so I respect any good guitar player, really, cause its so damn hard.
