Personally, I was the envy of my friends when we were all younger because I was allowed to play M rated games and watch R rated movies. I'm talking 9 to 10 years old here. These days you see so many parent organizations that place all the blame of kids turning out bad on violent media. I personally turned out great, Im good at school, stay out of trouble, and I've retained my intelligence and personallity. Based on the standards that some organizeations put out, I SHOULD be an impulse murderer that kills people in brutal fashion for his own entertainment. So, after that little story, what is your opinion on wheather violent games and movies affect kids or not?
I personally think it depends on the kid. When I was 9 or 10 I played Silent Hill and watched some R rated movies but my brother who is 10 now isnt allowed. My mom let him play SIlent Hill and Fatal Frame but he started acting real weird like saying that voices were in his head and that ghosts were everywhere. So she immediatly banned him from M rated games until he is older. Im glad she did to because he was starting to scare me. o_0

Agreed, hell, even sex isn't that bad. Almost every 13 year old in Ancient Greece was having sex(Mainly homosexual, then later Bi, then later MOSTLY hetero).

I think in a small way yes. But it is up to the parents to see what there kids are doing. My two sons are screwed be cause I play games they wont play anything that is to bad for there age.

Yeah I agree with you on that one, it really does depend on the kid. I guess my parents must have tried letting me at some point and saw that I reacted normally towards it.

yup, which is why they blame fast food restaurants for making their children obese instead of actually taking the time to make their kids eat healthy and prepare them good meals. parents nowadays just don't put enough effort into raising their kids anymore and would rather have a quick fix for anything as long as they don't actually have to sit down with their kids and, you know, parent.

That's true, but I'm just saying, the reason why studies show that things have bad effects is because the way they're raised. If you show sex as a bad thing a first sight at a sexual act will be possibly harmful, however, I admittedly first saw my first VERY sexual things at 9 or 10 and I am extremely unsexist and don't expect anything I shouldn't expect. I just think we are having so much problems with things because we make it a problem, if we cure EVERY STD I will be the first to reccomend that people of ALL ages perform acts of sex that cannot result in pregancy, since there'd be NO harm done, no preggums, no disease, it's extremely taboo, but I can only see people growing to love each other more and respect one another. One of the main reasons that Ancient Greece had same sex relations was so they would be more connected to each other in battle like a friend and lover, even in paintings depicting the battle from 300(Really old paintings) they were engaging sexually with one another. People have this idea that sexual exposure will confuse them, but it will only bring them to understand one of the most mutually gratifying thing with the biggest emotional and physical connection. Disease is a problem NOW, but won't always be, and preggums isn't an issue AT ALL, that's only for one form of sex, not ANY other form. Violence is only bad if kids don't understand morality, at 5 or 6, I once got mad at my dog and pushed him(Lightly), I felt bad after, imagine had I murdered a human being? Or even hurt one... Pretending something doesn't exist doesn't help, making people realizing how it works is better(Sex), and showing them why they shouldn't do it(Killing) is better.
I kill people every day in my head not in real life. This is what the problem is, some people cant distinguish between killing in games and killing in real life. They would have gone off the rails in the long run, games are just a way for people to blame something else.

It's not like we're dying out, we don't need lots of babies, let people who CAN parent, parent. You don't see me trying to build land mines, because I can't. People need to learn that not everything is them, people call, "Parent", a profession/occupation often for a reason, because it is. Especially in a world with technology, we don't live in a forest, they have to learn how to do things that their kids are doing, there's no excuse for not being able to use a parental control system if you're 12 year old can create crappy flash cartoons on Newgrounds.

no. i played violent games and i haven't murdered/assaulted anyone yet. unless the kid is REALLY messed up it won't affect them. the media just uses violent video games and movies as a scapegoat when parents raising their kids wrong are really to blame.
I have been playing videogames for years and I'm not a violent person, nor do I believe that any amount of violent games could ever make me or most people violent. However, I would imagine that for a tiny minority of young people who are mentally ill, and of that minority a further minority who's illness gives them a tendency towards violence, violent games can't help the situation.
Media is portrayed and reflected differently amongst individuals. All I can say that is true is that video games project the same type and amount of influence onto a child as television media.
well usually what i see from games that are M is that people just repeat dialogue or do gestures like the popular "hold sniper and do realistic recoil" gesture. but the child would have to be in a oppressed enviornment and be picked on all the time, etc. in order to be affected by it all

Depends on the kid, I had self control as a child after about 11. Even before I gained self control the games never did anything to me, so I guess as has been said before, it all depends on the child and how he/she was raised by his/her parents.
Not really, as long as the kid is mature enough to handle it (i.e., won't be scared and think that the monters are real and will come get them). Also, knowing that copying what the characters say and act is probably not ok in the real world.
If someone can't tell the difference between fantasy and reality, they have serious problems; and no, anything they decide to do they chose to, so it's not the fault of the game or movie producers.
If you only watch violent movies and play violent video games, yes they will effect you negatively. this happend to me a few years ago, I went on a four month binge of horror movies and nothing else, I think it was unhealthy.
However it is very rare that anyone would do this, so if you spread your attention across the wide spectrum of avalible games and movies, violence will have very little effect on your life.
I've played violent videogames and watched rated R movies when I was little. o_0 I turned out fine. Yeah, I might be a little morbid in the head and demented in some ways (only when it comes to my writings), but that doesn't mean I'm going to go out and just go on all out massacre. :| I know better than that.
Some people just take the easy way out and create a scapegoat. That being so, those people do not take the responsibility that they must, then creating a lie, saying it is not their fault, when it is. Not saying all people, just saying some.
