Yes. Very much so. Especially when it comes to black individuals and women. Everything then is either racist or sexist.

Agreed.

It annoyed me to no end back during the primaries, when Clinton supporters kept trying to call Obama supporters/campaign staff sexist... :|

Yep especially about black people. I had a childhood friend who I describe as half-cast because that's how I've always described him and to me that's fine. I use it because it's the first thing I heard and he's half white and half black. I mentioned it to Hero and he said that's racist and you've got to call them mixed race o_O Christ sake it was just a mate, I don't see anything offensive with that.

I generally find that the term "politically correct" is bandied about by the arrogant and ignorant. It's just an excuse to act like an idiot. It's like we're not allowed to be offended by anything, and if we are we're called PC as if that makes it right. What might be a bit of fun to you might be offense to another. And why should I just "shut up"? Surely not saying anything will just make the situation worse? However, I do agree, to a certain extent, there are some people who try too hard to stop people from being offensive, like the NHS nurse who was suspended for telling a patient she was praying for them. Nevertheless, there seems to be 2 extremes to this. There's the Daily Mail readers who label absolutely everything possible as PC just so they can say anything they want without repercussions. If you disagree or feel offended, you're told to "shut up" and deal with it. If you're allowed to say whatever you want, then I'm allowed to say whatever I want in disagreement. Then there's the other side, the mollycoddlers. The people who'd like to live their lives in a plastic bubble protected from the real world. I know there's a lot of people who take things too seriously these days, but politically correct? That's just a weapon the insensitive use to get away with indecent behaviour. I like South Park though :p

When they cannot tell the differences between criticism and hate speech; then yes they have gone too far.

In London a Muslim priest can take to the streets and preach that his people will take over our country and force us all into Islam, he can call our country wicked and that we need to 'fix' our women.

However should a authority figure associate Islam with violence or terrorism in idol talk; if the PC multicultural police hear him they can incriminated him for hate speech. The Muslim however preaching we will be conquered and enslaved by his religion at the gates of Parliament is protected by free speech.

We are 'way' past political correctness going too far here.

there are still some silly social rules that don't make sense. I mean, do you think it's wrong to use the word "black" when describing someone in a story. for example, if you were a white guy, this is what people usually say:

"so this black chick cut my hair yesterday..." (if the person who cut your hair was black)
"so this chick cut my hair yesterday..." (if the person who cut your hair was white)

do you think the fact that we use "black" to describe a person but use no descriptors if they are white is subtle racism? or do you think it's natural for people of different colors to recognize that they are often culturally different and make that distinction when describing each other?

I can't stand how insane all this political correctness is. It's one thing to be respectful to others, but it's completely different when you have to walk on egg shells in order to keep from "hurting someones feelings".

No it's not racism. Most people in the West are white, so we say "chick" because it's assumed they are a white person and state otherwise if they are black. I'm sure in countries where the majority are black then they'd say "I got my hair cut by a white chick".

That's a touchy situation though if there are people of color around. But I agree that I would say "black chic" most likely. Still I know that if I were talking to the public I would not want to say that because people could get upset. However at no time in the past do I think I would change that so that's why I think we aren't getting any more or less PC.

This person can use any words he want.

Is it wrong to crucify this person because he mentioned the fact that she was black? Yes, it's wrong to kill him for it.
Is it wrong to crucify this other person who asks "why was it important to mention that she was black?" Yes, it would be wrong to kill this guy for that too.

There's usually nothing wrong with some phrases if there's no ill intent behind them, but there's nothing wrong with people getting offended by them either. They Can't Help getting offended. It's better for everybody if you're careful with what you say around people you don't know very well.

Well, political correctness only serves to widen the gap between cultures and cause resentment.

[QUOTE="Hungry_bunny"]No reason to be politically correct in every day life conversations with people who know you and understand when you're joking. But not being politically correct among strangers or out in the media would not be a smart move imo.HoldThePhone

This. I don't think it's really been different in the past few years.

there are still some silly social rules that don't make sense.

I'm black and i always describe a person by race or skin color.

Like "so i met this white/black/hispanic chick the other day" to my friends all the and they do the same, I myself never take offense to things like this actually i have a friend who is hispanic who hate's a lot hispanics and always talks bad about them.

Yes and no. There are words that don't need to be used anymore and I'm glad people face the consequences when they do. But I agree with you that people need to leave everyone alone and live their own lives.

Yes, and it's really annoying. I gave up on it a long time ago.

Yep. It can be a funny thing to joke about though. Swings and roundabouts I guess. >.>

AnnoyedDragon
That's different. A police officer NEEDS to be indifferent and unbiased to do his job, a hate preaching maniac does not :p

Yes. Very much so. Especially when it comes to black individuals and women. Everything then is either racist or sexist.
