Seriously, people need to stop getting offended so easy. Words are just words... they don't mean anything. I actually think it's pretty funny when people get all bent out of shape just because I said something. It's like... just get over it.

Yeah in my school, I was talking about a guy I knew in my PSE class and he was gay so I said so and nearly everyone in my class was telling me I had to say homosexual.

Black people call us White and we call them Black I don't see why there is a problem. Apparantly they're changing the nursery rhyme from "Baa baa black sheep" to "Baa baa rainbow sheep"

It gets very tedious...

You see, there's a difference between expressing your opinions, and being an ass. There's such a thing as tact and diplomacy. It's quite obvious you do care or else you wouldn't keep going on about it though.

[QUOTE="tofu-lion91"]

[QUOTE="HoldThePhone"]there are still some silly social rules that don't make sense. I mean, do you think it's wrong to use the word "black" when describing someone in a story. for example, if you were a white guy, this is what people usually say:

"so this black chick cut my hair yesterday..." (if the person who cut your hair was black)
"so this chick cut my hair yesterday..." (if the person who cut your hair was white)

do you think the fact that we use "black" to describe a person but use no descriptors if they are white is subtle racism? or do you think it's natural for people of different colors to recognize that they are often culturally different and make that distinction when describing each other?

HoldThePhone

No it's not racism. Most people in the West are white, so we say "chick" because it's assumed they are a white person and state otherwise if they are black. I'm sure in countries where the majority are black then they'd say "I got my hair cut by a white chick".

whaf it you added, "so this huge black chick cut my hair yesterday...."

would a black person who overheard you feel offended? should they?

I don't see why that would be offensive to anyone except if it was the huge black chick who heard you.

Yes. Very much so. Especially when it comes to black individuals and women. Everything then is either racist or sexist.

Yes, then they can say whatever they want to white men and get away with it.

I generally find that the term "politically correct" is bandied about by the arrogant and ignorant. It's just an excuse to act like an idiot.

It's like we're not allowed to be offended by anything, and if we are we're called PC as if that makes it right. What might be a bit of fun to you might be offense to another. And why should I just "shut up"? Surely not saying anything will just make the situation worse? However, I do agree, to a certain extent, there are some people who try too hard to stop people from being offensive, like the NHS nurse who was suspended for telling a patient she was praying for them.

Nevertheless, there seems to be 2 extremes to this. There's the Daily Mail readers who label absolutely everything possible as PC just so they can say anything they want without repercussions. If you disagree or feel offended, you're told to "shut up" and deal with it. If you're allowed to say whatever you want, then I'm allowed to say whatever I want in disagreement. Then there's the other side, the mollycoddlers. The people who'd like to live their lives in a plastic bubble protected from the real world.

I know there's a lot of people who take things too seriously these days, but politically correct? That's just a weapon the insensitive use to get away with indecent behaviour. I like South Park though :pkarriston

Well said. I agree 100% :)

PCness is not a problem for me. I don't have people coming up to me calling me a racist or sexist.

Living life with a sense of humor makes everything more enjoyable. Sadly, a lot of people take everything seriously, which leads to all of this politically correctness.

Society has been too politically correct for a while. But then, that's what society is for. In most cases, as a western society, we tolerate and accept a lot more than we do as individuals.

That's different. A police officer NEEDS to be indifferent and unbiased to do his job, a hate preaching maniac does not :pkarriston

Who said a police officer? All I said was a authority figure; which doesn't necessarily have to be someone who needs to be unbiased in their job. Hell look at the BNP, they are widely considered racist and yet they are a legitimate political party.

I'm just thinking who gets to decide what is hate speech and what is free speech, political correctness seems to be the loophole that allows people to silence those they do not like by claiming their comments are racist.

Who would be considered hate speech? The Muslim preacher who thinks we should be conquered; or the person associating Islam with terrorism? The preacher of course is encouraging violence, however the bizarre logic of PC would have him protected while the odd comment punished.

I hate when people get offended by everything now adays its like shut up stop worrying about it and live your own life. people prob think Im a jerk but Im just a realist.

Snakewiseman

yeh, i think we are. who is to say we all have to act a certain way, and if you dont some will look down on you as if they were better then you, pffft....followers always think like this. times are changing and the system needs to change with the times. gone are the days where everyone wore suits and long dresses, gone are the days where every one dance and listened to the same type of music. we are just now starting to express ourselves as individuals, but, some that are stuck in their organized slaved ways just can't break the ignorant bonds that binds their supposedly free thinking mind.

I think you can definitely make the case that we put too much of an emphasis on political correctness. However, I think it is somewhat of a non-issue. Let people say what they wanna say; whether that be saying something that is not deemed politically correct or by going out of your way to be politically correct.

Down here in S.Florida they hate the term African American. I agree. Just because someone is black does not mean they are half-american and half-african. Many are here in america many generations or have family from the carribean.

carribean=/=africa.

America needs to lighten up- no, that wasn't a racist statement.

They need to crucify Chris Rock the way that they crucified Kramer.
