[QUOTE="Rob-Belmont"][QUOTE="markop2003"]No, i'm unemployed so i don't really have cash to spare, also over here in the UK we only tip if they give service above the bare requirements of the job description.markop2003
Strange, most people I know feel it is their duty to provide a tip.

Not in the UK, we pay them wages to full fill they're job description, if they want more then they have to do more

I live in the UK as well. I just find it strange that everybody else from the UK in this thread is saying the same as you, including myself, but most people I know feel they should tip for even a regular effort of service, most of my friends and relatives feel that way :?

Yeah, but they usually make less than minimum wage when working. At least, in the US that's how most restaurants work.

They won't make much money doing that. And if I don't have a right to be served then I'll walk over and pick up my own food, thanks. They're going to serve you because they want you to buy their overpriced food. If you made it yourself, it'd cost about a third less.

Good point. This whole thing could be avoided if the charge was just included. The money ends up in the same place and we avoid this whole debacle.

I meant that the waiters don't have to literally serve me. If that's what all the fuss is about and it's such a chore, I'll get the food from the chef myself.

15% at most, usually what I'll do is round up the bill to the nearest 10 or 5, and if I feel it is inadequate, I will give more. Depends on service.
Although, I REALLY hate the idea of tipping. Servers over here get paid normally, and Im expected to tip :x

I always tip the minimum amount, regardless of service. But I am a nice customer, so I am pretty much always treated nice by service staff. However I will tip more than standard gratuity if I receive really great service. Anyone who doesn't tip should eat home or fast food, because waiters and waitresses get paid much less than minimum wage because they are tipped by the majority of people with brains and a heart. I look down on people who do not tip, and I will not go to restaurants with them, period.

I work at a restaurant as a dishwasher right now, and the servers are terrible people, they are so nice to you, but that doesnt mean they are nice to their co-workers, or you behind your backs. Some servers are really good though, and genuinely nice.

That said, I tip at least three dollars if I can afford it, and tell my compatriots to tip or I will harm them.

Tipping (or not) is a social/cultural norm that varies widely around the world.

At home in Canada I tip 15% at least 80% of the time. Otherwise I'll leave more for excellent service, and very rarely I'll leave less or nothing for crappy service.

Also, I have travelled a lot and one of the things I make sure I learn in-advance is the social norm for tipping where I am visiting.

I usually tip regardless, but if the waiter was really bad I'll leave a lower tip.

There was one time our waiter took our drink orders, we didn't see her again for another 20 minutes and when we asked her she just scowled at us and came back and practically slammed our drinks down on the table. We told the manager and were moved to another waitress' section, who was excellent.

I do the usual 15%, but I might throw in an extra buck or two if the service was very nice. I will tip less if we had terrible service, but I've never had incredibly bad service that made me leave nothing lol.

I always have tipped, and always will. A long time ago, I was like 16 and I was with some friends and they decided to eat out, and I only had like $3. We (they) ate at O'Charley's and they had very little $ as well. So once they got their food, they didn't have enough $ to get me anything or leave a tip. I left my only $3 I had so the waitress could get a tip, even though I had nothing to eat. Thinking back on it though, those "friends" were wrong for eating at a place like that with very little $ to where they couldn't give me a few bucks so I could eat, and I ended up leaving a tip. Oh well, that was almost 10 years ago. Like I said, I've always tipped. Even if the service is not to my liking. I'll always tip $3-$5. Their have been times where I left nearly $5 in quarters, dimes, and nickels, but hey that's alot of change.

Well, considering there is no law, wrong in a legal sense, no. But I would say ethically, it is. It's sort of a common courtesy. Waitress get paid crap wages, and rely on tips for a living. They usually bust their butts to make sure you're attended to. If you want to eat out and not tip the people who serve you, you should stick to fast food.

I'd have to say that that is a load of crap. My brother works as a waiter and he made over $600 last week. Sure he doesn't always make that much, but to make it seem like waiters and waitresses toil and labor for mere pennies is nonsense.

Then again, maybe he's just an extraordinary waiter. :P

If you get bad service, you go elsewhere. It's not as if employees here mope around because they know they're getting paid whatever happens. If they do that, they get fired. If not, the restaurant looks bad. It seems more convenient to just have the price of service included in the meal. My biggest issue is still with the fact that there are many jobs besides waitressing that provide a service and the service given by those people isn't consistently substandard.

Oh, it works like that? You get to just plain not pay if you get bad service?

Because, like, you can go elsewhere REGARDLESS of whether or not the waiters get tips. That wasn't my question. If you get bad service, would you rather have to pay the employees well anyway, or would you rather be able to not pay well because the service sucks?

What, do you think that tipping somehow PREVENTS customers from being able to just go somewhere else?

Watch the opening scene of Reservoir Dogs. That should help you decide whether it's right or wrong :)

Hopkins_J

if you live in the US, then yes its wrong. most waitresses get about 2.50 an hour before tips, so they're relying on that to live on. alot of other countries have the waitresses paycheck worked into the bill so that its not an issue, but the food is more expensive in this case so it evens out.

And it is my duty to ensure they get paid well?

If you intentionally seek out their service, then yeah.

People go to these restaurants because they KNOW that they're gonna get better service than at a serve-yourself restaurant. The service IS part of the experience, and that's why people go to these places. If you intentionally seek out a service, and then refuse to pay just because you don't have to, then that is wrong. Period.

[QUOTE="MrGeezer"]The waiter's job is in providing service. They provide service, and then customers pay them for what they think the service was worth.

I don't see the problem. If your waiter provided good service, then pay him/her well. If he/she provided crappy service, then don't pay him well. As long as the customer is fair, and not a dirtbag cheapskate, then what's the problem?

Would you rather have tips replaced by a mandatory service fee, so that you then have to pay the waiter well even if the service was crappy?

tofu-lion91

But there are cheapskates out there which isn't fair on the waiter/waitress. Mandatory service charge, you mean putting the wages into the price of the food like every other country? If the service is crappy you just complain to the manager or something.

You can complain to the manager anyway.

And it's totally fair to the waiters. Reading this topic, you might get the impression that most people are cheapskates who stiff their waiters. But in real life, that's not the case. Most people actually DO tip, and the cheapskates are in the vast minority. People generally DO tend to tip, and often well. This is why waiting is one of the few ways in which an uneducated unskilled person can make good money with no training.

Yes... or you'll get a lesser bill that would account for the money you chose not to give through tipping. Also, I've never cared about the service enough to notice good from bad. I go for the food not the pleasure of having a plate placed in front of me with a smile, though I would imagine that I've never had substandard service before anyway.
