[QUOTE="GazaAli"]Doctor=working with tragedies and weird **** all the time. Lawyer=being immoral and milk the **** out of the client. so please, burn me to death.

Those are the extreme negatives. There are some very good lawyers out there. In fact, I'm willing to bet the majority of lawyers out there are at least "decent", because the system is setup to catch unethical lawyers; It's just that no one cares about the good lawyers, only the infamous ones. As for Dr.'s you can always specialize in something that doesn't deal with tragedies or weird crap. For instance, you can become a dentist or a pharmacist. Both of those are medical degrees that don't require you to be tragedies, unless we are talking about killer breath or some such thing :P

Look at it this way. If you were to write a book on America's most popular lawyers, it would probably be a thin book. Doctors on the other hand...

I hate people who just want to be lawyers or doctors for the money. Those kind of people disgust me.

I read somewhere that a recent survey said that a large percentage (might have been majority, can't remember) of doctors got into it for the money. As long as they are competent, I don't really care what their motivation is. I got into it mostly because my parents wanted me to, but now I'm really hooked on becoming a surgeon. I've always liked understanding how machines work and fixing them, and surgery is as close as I'm going to get to disassembling the human machine and fixing it. So yeah, my reasons are selfish and not altruistic, but as long as I do my job and help people, no harm no foul.

Word of warning; law school is absurdly expensive and unless you're bloody rich, you would be foolish to go without a massive scholarship, which you can't get unless you have insanely good GPA and LSAT scores; which if you have you may as well go to t14 and make 160K a year.

Just be forewarned -- either path isn't really obtainable by everyone. You'll have to sacrifice many things, including your social life, to obtain them -- and for a long period of time. Hell; the job itself won't be a cakewalk either. Either career opens up a lifelong learning process and if you aren't already brilliant -- you're going to have one Hell of a time.

Both professions are completely different ... unless you become a doctor/lawyer. Many of those exist, they specialize in suing doctors, hospitals, etc. My degree is in accounting so I have more knowledge of law than medical (which is actually zero). Lawyers interpret the law and argue those interpretations (unless something is explicitly spelled out). To be a successful lawyer you MUST have excellent reading comprehension skills and develop the ability to understand and interpret laws accurately.

If you have the brains to become a doctor (most who enter college with the aim to become a doctor fail miserably at it, such as myself!) then go that route. You are practically guaranteed to make excellent money when you come out of medical school. Lawyers, despite spending a ton of money for schooling, make very little money. To increase your chances of being a successful lawyer you must attend an Ivy league school.

The same goes for getting into medical school. Pre-med students are basically biology majors. And if you complete your pre-med education in a rinky-dink school you probably won't be getting into any med school in the USA. For pre-med you should go to a large state university, such as the University of Florida -- or a school that has its own medical school.

Neither of those professions should be decided based on a whim or a GS poll....I'm currently in pre-med now and I don't think I could continue if I didn't REALLY want to be a doctor. You of all people should know what you want to do...don't just do it because it's lucrative and prestigious, or whatever you think it is. Do what you would enjoy most as a career....

Don't know what you're basing that off of, but I'm gonna have to disagree..If anything they're roughly equal.

I would probably choose to be a lawyer, between those.

I like logic, debate, reasoning, and figuring things out.

I completely agree.

If you do something against your will and you aren't true to yourself, you're not going to be happy.

You would be surprised. There are tons of different types of jobs in the legal profession. The plethora of concentrations allow for drastically diverse career paths. An IP lawyer isn't going to be doing the same thing as a judge advocate.

Even when something is explicitly spelled out. There is the big debate over plain language and original intent. (And consequentialism)

Both career don't appeal to me at all. At first I wanted to be a lawyer, but then I thought how I would despise having to defend scumbag criminals who are guilty. That turned me off right there, and chose not to go with that. Also, I pretty much dislike any profession which doesn't have set hours. I want to have a family and actually BE THERE with my family.

As for doctor, I just wouldn't be able to live off having to deal with people dying and having to sew body parts back and stuff like that. Too grim for me and depressing. And the hours are freaking horrible. My aunt and uncle who are doctors are rarely at their homes.

You seem to be really interested in being a lawyer, so go with that. Laws is a very interesting subject, not going to lie. Had to take some Business Law classes for my major and really enjoyed them. Just please promise to be a lawyer with a heart. ;)

Being a lawyer is a heck of a lot easier, and probably earns you more money seeing as there's more or less no such thing as a low-paying job as a lawyer, unless you really screw up your degree. Being a doctor takes an awful, awful lot time and hard work, and after all that you can still end up with a job which doesn't exactly make you well-off. Being a lawyer is pretty much an easy ticket to a fat pay cheque, though many find themselves a little depressed or feeling shallow due to the slimy nature of the job. I say that as a lawyer in training.
