Few years ago in a little island called Australia, I thought high schools are like the ones in the movies, lockers, football field, long hallway etc. But I was wrong, it look nothing like what I thought. So does American high school really looks like the ones in the movies?

I've been wondering the same thing. Not about the aesthetical aspects, but more about the scoial atmosphere,as in,the whole clique-based structure(Is it really a nerds, jocks, cheerleaders type thing?) Is there really that amount of animosity between kids(stuffing people into lockers, cheerleaders ganging up on the fat girl etc.)? And if so-what do they put in the water to make everyone act like they have their heads-firmly-in-anus?

Yeah pretty much but its not like every high school is rich...

Its not as apparent irl as it is in movies. Think about the real life consequences of stuffing someone in their locker... They'd be seriously injured. As far as the cheerleader thing... It depends at my school most of the cheerleaders weren't that popular(the majorettes are where it was at). Sure these social stereotypes exist but the line isn't as clear as movies make it. I was on the chess team, football team, and at all the parties.

Yes and no. People tends to hate other cliques but not as defined, the lines more blurred. Getting stuffed into a locker only happens in movies or on TV. When I went to high school the lockers were way to small for people to fit into making it physically impossible to happen.

They do, but the students don't. They look way younger than how they look in the movies.

I live in Canada, and my school looked like a prison and my friend's school in the same district looked like a hospital. the college I'm going to looks like the colleges in movies (maybe because U of T has been used as filming location quite many times), except its weather sucks.

Now I wish I could be in one of those rich co-ed high schools in America. But here in Australia, though we get free education in public schools, I chose to go to an all boys Catholic school (ironically no one cares about religion here), it's so tiny (population approx. 600), no grass field, outdated equipments and no lockers. But we had really awesome teachers that joke with us. Too late for me to change schools.

I'm fine with that school, I don't do sports and I almost never used my locker ever. But I had a lot of crappy teachers (had some really good ones on the way, but our school it's really bad or really good. and the ratio isn't all that good)

The thing about America is that the country is huge (and thus there are a lot of different social norms throughout the country) and schools are mostly controlled and funded by local governments. As a result each high school has its own atmosphere in the US. One school may look like a college campus while another may literally be one room schoolhouse with five students aged 5-17 (no, seriously, we have schools like that in the US although they're very rare and only in extremely rural areas). From my own personal experiences, most middle and high schools in the US have lockers. Reason being that most high schools in the US have students switching rooms for every class, so students need some place to store their books, folders, and other materials when they're not in the classes that require them. I never had a tall locker like the ones you see movies though. The ones I've always seen are half-lockers, where you have two lockers stacked on top of each other that are half the height of the ones you see in the movies. As a result there's no way you can stuff a person into those lockers (it's hard enough to fit all of your books in them lol). This would be different in older high schools though, as those would most likely use tall lockers. Ones built since the 80s or 90s though would probably use the half-lockers. As far as student culture goes, there's probably as much bullying in American schools as you'll find anywhere else. But again, it really depends on the school you go to. Some schools are pretty tame with bullying while others have kids stabbing each other and pushing kids down flights of stairs (those are usually inner city schools ridden with gang crime though). Cliques don't really exist like you see in the movies though. You will see groups of friends that mostly hang out with each other, but it's never so stereotyped like you see in movies nor do they really ever fight with each other unless there's some sort of drama between them.

We really need lockers, we are sick of carrying a 6kg bag all day long with you, where ever you go. And yea, only 2 teachers in my school are crappy, all the other 40 or so teachers are good and funny, some talk about games, some just make fun of other kids (not in a bad way), some jokes alot, some talk with us about everyday life and some are just plain nice, our school is also very multicultural.

It does where I grew up (Fallon, NV). In fact, one (or part of one episode) episode of The Wonder Years were filmed at a Jr High there.

Protip: If it is commonly portrayed in some manner through Hollywood/movies and television in general, rule of thumb is that is not going to be very accurate to the real thing.

People caught on the wrong points in my first post. I wasn't asking to discuss the semantics involving "Locker-stuffing",but the social statuses of americans HS. I'll give an example-in some HS films there's this phenomenon where the "cool crowd" or "A list"(does those exist, for one?) refuse to let the unpopular kids-In "their" hallway/to "their" lunch table etc. can that be found IRL? Cause that was always a bit ,too hard, to believe...

Not as badly in the average case you would see portrayed in movies/television, but it definitely exists on a mass scale. But I do believe the social ladder/clique system exists everywhere.

There was 0 bullying in my HS.I've never seen or heard about bullying after elementary school...That's why I'm having problems accepting all this high-drama and social ranking going on...

There's not much bullying at the high schools of my hometown. Many households have guns and most bullies are smart enough to know the consequences can be fatal for them (and/or their friends).

Depends if you're going to a "rich" school or not, basically. Some schools look like the pristine versions you see in movies, but others look just like the schools you see in the 4th season of The Wire (meaning not good).

My school does look like one of the ones in the movies as it's rather large and the area is upper-middle class in general. We all have full-size lockers, though they're primarily only visited once a day since c|asses can be rather far apart.

The school has a small theater, a large, i-max size theater, a small gym, a large gym/fieldhouse with an indoor track upstairs, a competitive swimming pool, a recreational swimming area that's open to the public (like a mini-waterpark), two floors, a school store, full size library, large cafeteria, indoor courtyard, roughly six computer labs, fully stocked auto-lab, a football field and track, two baseball fields, and softball field. The school population is a little over 2,000 I think, but outside of government funding, the school receives funding from GM (their proving grounds are in town).

I'd say that the atmosphere is quite different from what's portrayed in the movies though. There is no definitive "jock" clique, the cheerleaders aren't worshipped (the attractive/popular girls play volleyball, soccer, and basketball), and it's a lot less stratified in the movies. For instance, you can see "jocks" and "nerds" having fun together throughout the school. There are definitely different groups of friends, but there isn't really antagonism between them. There's tons of school spirit as well. Even though the football team is decent, not amazing, the stands are jam-packed every game. It's pretty sweet, I gotta say. :P

Thats more of a middle school thing. In high school, the "social class" things starts to fade a bit. At least it did in my high school. I went to one of the top 5 public high schools in my state; so it was both awesome and awful. It has awesome class selection, like 100 electives. But the school is really strict on tardy and absence policies. So its frustrating.

So yeah, my high school looked kinda like a movie.

High schools are nothing like in movies. At all. There are no distinct cliques, popular kids don't ingore all the unpopular ones, no big tough guys who push all the smaller kids out of their way.

my school had a lot of bullying, about 1400 kids went to our school. the problem was rich kids and poor kids all went to the same school. there would be four more kids then what the room could hold and half the time we would have to share books cuz there wasnt enough for every person. if someone started flexing at you and you didnt fight them right away you would be tortured the rest of the year.. sometimes jumped.

fights went on everyday.. a lot of ambulences were called, staties were called out to do full body searches on us normally once a week. i know of ten people that died before we even graduated... most were drunk driving accidents but the rest were all shootings usually from drugs or women troubles.

how you know your school is gangster, when two guys get into a knife fight during your high school graduation ceremony (medivac hellicopters were called but no one died tho). this actually happend at my school!

i take it most people went to nice schools and dont have the same experiences that i did, my school was rough.. every day was like walking into a wolves den and fighting for survival.

i had three instances where the principal got punched in the face trying to step inbetween fights.. then both guys jumping the teachers and principal instead of fighting each other.
