High schools are nothing like in movies. At all. There are no distinct cliques, popular kids don't ingore all the unpopular ones, no big tough guys who push all the smaller kids out of their way.harashawn

I wish my HS had the socially accepted "American Highschool" look your talking about. Mine was multiple buildings, interior carpets instead of tiles, cramped hallways, and no lockers (we had to carry everything on our backs).

I guess it depends on the school. I mean, my high school had lockers, a football field, long hallways, etc., but it wasn't like the high schools depicted in American teen comedies or anything. It wasn't nearly as clique-y, no one cared about the cheerleaders, we didn't have pep rallies every day, there weren't many "mean girls," and so on. Everyone just pretty much did their own thing. Of course there were some rude people who thought they were popular, there were 'groups' or 'cliques,' but it wasn't really a big deal. You could kind of mingle with other groups without much of a problem. However, my junior high (middle school) was kind of stereotypical, but I think most are. That's a very weird time for everyone, so it was super clique-y.

my school had a lot of bullying, about 1400 kids went to our school. the problem was rich kids and poor kids all went to the same school. there would be four more kids then what the room could hold and half the time we would have to share books cuz there wasnt enough for every person. if someone started flexing at you and you didnt fight them right away you would be tortured the rest of the year.. sometimes jumped.

fights went on everyday.. a lot of ambulences were called, staties were called out to do full body searches on us normally once a week. i know of ten people that died before we even graduated... most were drunk driving accidents but the rest were all shootings usually from drugs or women troubles.

how you know your school is gangster, when two guys get into a knife fight during your high school graduation ceremony (medivac hellicopters were called but no one died tho). this actually happend at my school!

I have a question...

i take it most people went to nice schools and dont have the same experiences that i did, my school was rough.. every day was like walking into a wolves den and fighting for survival.

i had three instances where the principal got punched in the face trying to step inbetween fights.. then both guys jumping the teachers and principal instead of fighting each other.

Well my school in australia is nothing like the ones in the US movies and such for example we have to wear uniforms we have no lockers but i dont mind carrying around an 8 kilo bag its not that bad.

In our Middle school which is years 8-10 theres a huge socail order but not like one group is on top we have 2 major groups one group being made up of all the people who will get no where in life and get suspended atleast twice a month this group includes the sluts, smokers, druggys, criminals and overall no future types.

While the other major group is made up of all the cool in their part people who arnt the smartest of people but dont smoke, do drugs and get into fights continuosely this group is mainly more pasive and friendly and sit with each other all the time. then theres all the other groups but the 1st one i mentioned is the worst and most of the school stays clear of them and hates atleast one of them in each respect. And as for the Upper school 11-12 yrs they dont mess around as much and settel down when they get to their year.

Well our school also has barbwire fences surrounding it we have two story buildings across most of the school which are connected by over hanging walkways and such we have a huge gym a huge basketball/netball court we have a soccer oval and a Football oval and overall its alright.

I live in Canada, and my school looked like a prison and my friend's school in the same district looked like a hospital. the college I'm going to looks like the colleges in movies (maybe because U of T has been used as filming location quite many times), except its weather sucks.funsohng

that sucked, my schools looked normal and new schools look like shopping malls, but the normal looking schools are very very old. I love licing in a rich town! I hear soo many bad things about U of T

really most ppl went to school to get drugs, it was the best place to score.. and hook up with girls. ppl actually would go instead of dropping out just to get stuff.

[QUOTE="grape_of_wrath"]I've been wondering the same thing. Not about the aesthetical aspects, but more about the scoial atmosphere,as in,the whole clique-based structure(Is it really a nerds, jocks, cheerleaders type thing?) Is there really that amount of animosity between kids(stuffing people into lockers, cheerleaders ganging up on the fat girl etc.)? And if so-what do they put in the water to make everyone act like they have their heads-firmly-in-anus?gameguy6700
The thing about America is that the country is huge (and thus there are a lot of different social norms throughout the country) and schools are mostly controlled and funded by local governments. As a result each high school has its own atmosphere in the US. One school may look like a college campus while another may literally be one room schoolhouse with five students aged 5-17 (no, seriously, we have schools like that in the US although they're very rare and only in extremely rural areas). From my own personal experiences, most middle and high schools in the US have lockers. Reason being that most high schools in the US have students switching rooms for every class, so students need some place to store their books, folders, and other materials when they're not in the classes that require them. I never had a tall locker like the ones you see movies though. The ones I've always seen are half-lockers, where you have two lockers stacked on top of each other that are half the height of the ones you see in the movies. As a result there's no way you can stuff a person into those lockers (it's hard enough to fit all of your books in them lol). This would be different in older high schools though, as those would most likely use tall lockers. Ones built since the 80s or 90s though would probably use the half-lockers. As far as student culture goes, there's probably as much bullying in American schools as you'll find anywhere else. But again, it really depends on the school you go to. Some schools are pretty tame with bullying while others have kids stabbing each other and pushing kids down flights of stairs (those are usually inner city schools ridden with gang crime though). Cliques don't really exist like you see in the movies though. You will see groups of friends that mostly hang out with each other, but it's never so stereotyped like you see in movies nor do they really ever fight with each other unless there's some sort of drama between them.

I live in canada and go to a school that was built in the early seventies, half lockers for us too. They don't look very old though, so they could've been put in instead.

Cliques aren't well defined, just people who hang out with each other, regardless of social status. The best you can get is people who share common interests, like video games or smoking pot. The scale of popularity is entirely mythical. You might be well known for being on the sports teams, but that's mostly people who actually attend the games, which I doubt half the students do. Bullying isn't as nearly prevalent or dramatic as they show in media. The best you'll get is petty insults and angry lashbacks. This is pretty much prevented because of school policy. At least in Texas, which in that case, is one of the better points of Texas education.

What state you're in? NSW only has high school (7-12)and primary (K-6), I have never heard of middle school in my area. Anyway I hate to carry a 6kg bag all day around, and only few people in my school smoke and do drugs. We have no football/soccer field, no swimming pool, no lockers, tiny gym, 2 small basket court, a decent hall and we are rated one of the lower Catholic school in NSW.

When I went to H.S it looked NOTHING like what I use to see on T.V as a kid. We didnt have white "jocks" stuffing people in lockers, didnt allow us to even use the lockers (well, that might explain the stuffing :P ), no over dramatic cheerleaders (they were hot though), no lunch tickets, no cutting up the frog in science class, etc. We did have a new football field but everyone was cool and when it came to prom, we just went and danced with whoever. NOTHING like in the movies/T.V the way Hollywood puts it.

Ive wondered too. I guess my Canadian high school shouldn't be much different but my school is really small (350) I think it would be weird to not know everyone by name like I do. Ive yet to see a jock in real life too. Athletes round here are at least decently smart.

Yeah there's really none of that. The sports players are not ripped and the cheerleaders are not hot. (whites are the minority ehre though so idk XD.) All the bullies usually end up as dropouts and loosers. There are some degrees of popularity, but it's not that hard to move up in the rungs.

When I use to go to high school (In Canada) it wasn't really like the films. And plus all the jocks that I knew there were good people. But one thing though is that in High school films was first people fighting each other, and usually in the films or shows, the Principal is always hated by the students so much that they use pranks on them and with my school there was a Vice-Principal who was so hated there that his car would be vandalized, many students would mock him at assemblies and there would be graffiti that had a lot of insults about him. Now as for the main Principal, there was never any hate since every year we always use to get a new one and we never knew much about them.

Thats the type of school I went to... There was some poor kid that got jumped by 15 - 20 students... You had to learn to fight. I got jumped once and I beat the crap out of all 4 of them... They never messed with me again after that!
