What I mean by balancing is if lets say Barrack Obama wins (which in my mind he is probably going to) then you have a democrat as president and a democrat controlled congress, leaving only the supreme court as a balancing factor. Now imagine all the laws and ordinances they can pass on things they dont like for example: The military, firearms, free market, and other freedoms that republicans usually campaign for and do well with. Im not saying Obama is a bad guy but it seems like if hes elected we will be in the complete left, anyone else feel this way? Or can anyone offer me some solace

No party is going to turn the US into a socialist or fascist state no matter how much control they have for a session or two. The Supreme Court is still there and power always swings back and forth. Both sides always make too much of how horrible it would be that one party has a lot of power, but neither are as extremist as their opponents claim.

when one party is in control of the presidency, senate, and house, it's bad (even if it's the republicans, and i'm a republican). they can pass whatever they want. that could be the worst part of obama being president.

Well, 6 of the last 8 years had a Republican President, Congress, and Supreme Court.

Worst case scenario, they cancel out some of the terrible crap that has happened in that period.

Im a moderate, I usually vote with the party with my best interests at heart, now I do disagree with republicans A LOT but they do keep the democrats from passing crazy and stupid laws, and vice versa with the dems striking down the republicans, but when 1 party has too much power it can be a very bad thing for everyone unless your a bleeding heart/full left democrat

I guess I just haven't been paying attention, because I sure don't remember that.

You would be scared, unless of course, you believe in democrat ideals. Hopefully this way we can get things like healthcare, an end to the iraq war, relief for the poor, tighter regulations on big evil corporations, and more gun control (less people shooting each other).

Now, don't get worried. Obama is a smart guy. He understands what liberal ideals to push, and which to hold back on.

That said, I don't believe there should ever be a 60% supermajority in the senate. In history class we did this senate role-playing thing, and the majority of the people in the class were against my side. So then everyone else basically just voted to strip us all of our money and all of our power. The filibuster is important because, although the minority can't pass their legeslations, with the filibuster, then at least the majority can't screw over the minority.

I really didnt want to start a debate but seriously we need to finish what we started in iraq before we leave, and not turn it into vietnam part 2, our troops have worked too hard to have that happen and too much blood has been spilt. And as for gun control, limiting what law abiding people(its not the law abiding people who go around killing each-other with their guns) who buy guns for there many different purposes is a shame and a crime against the constitution

The Supreme Court is more than enough to lay the smack down on the legislature.

The court would just smack that down. The Fairness Doctrine was already ruled out in Red Lion Broadcasting Co. V Federal Communications Commmission.

Hopefully Obama puts enough Repubs in his cabinet so he can get some contrasting views while they are crafting policy...

I wouldn't be the least bit surprised that if he is made President we'll see a bipartisan commission or two created to advise on some issues like Guantanamo and such.

We already know the direction Guantanamo is heading thanks to the courts.

Neither Obama or McCain will keep it open, the question is HOW to close it.
