first off HP shouldn't even be selling computers, HP doesn't know how to make one really. and secondly Dell is a pretty big company, I wouldn't doubt it.GameGuy642003Right. The number one rated PC company doesn't know how to make them. Good Lord, some people's kids on here. SMH...
Right. The number one rated PC company doesn't know how to make them. Good Lord, some people's kids on here. SMH... Dude i don't know about you but HP's have not gone well with me. My speculation is that they market there products to the highly uneducated computer users. Dang, thats suprising. Most everyone I know who has owned an HP says they regret buying one. Seems you lucked out or something. I've also heard Dell's can swing either way, they are tough and durable thats all I can really say about them.

I haven't lucked out. HP is the #1 rated for a reason.Que? I thought that was pretty self-explanatory. He was asking whether Dell had a monopoly or near-monopoly. The prevalence of other major competitors sort of precludes that possibility.[QUOTE="famicommander"]HP, Acer/Gateway/eMachines, Asus, Samsung, Sony, and Apple all produce the same types of products as Dell, so no?Pirate700

I think HP is just ahead in market share. The market share for the PC market is pretty spaced among several different brands. It's good to see that Asus market shares are growing after only a short time in the pre-made business. ferrari2001Hell, my HP basically is an asus. I opened it up to upgrade the power supply and gfx card and it was asus everything.
Hell, my HP basically is an asus. I opened it up to upgrade the power supply and gfx card and it was asus everything. Well asus has primarily been a parts manufacturer. It was smart of them to jump into the pre-built business. It saves them money not having to go through a supplier. Plus from my experience their computers have been high quality.[QUOTE="ferrari2001"]I think HP is just ahead in market share. The prevalence of other major competitors sort of precludes that possibility. Yet they have small shares of the market. MS had 99% around with OSX and Linux, and that's considered a near monopoly. Dell has over 70% with HP being the only close second, and HP with computer hardware comparision concerned, is having lower numbers, and the other have not even moved. They have a near-monopoly.[QUOTE="famicommander"]HP, Acer/Gateway/eMachines, Asus, Samsung, Sony, and Apple all produce the same types of products as Dell, so no?famicommander

I've had 2 HPs die on me less than a month after the warrantee expired so I will never buy another HP again. That said I'm not big on Dell either. Right now my laptop is a lenovo and I love this thing.

how does that math add up?
Dell products are usually pretty bad. I don't keep up with dell/hp etc. I build my own stuff.YoshiYogurt

I think he meant in the sense that their computers are crap. At least thats the way I see hp or just about any prebuilt computer company with exceptions of course.

How can Dell have 77% and HP have 53% of the market? That's 130% of the market, and that's not even counting the 38% you said the others have.
Honestly Dell's numbers are probably closer to around 10-12% of the market. They were around 17% when I worked there and their share has dropped a lot since then.
On a side note - never buy a Dell they are poorly made. Sure they are cheap in price, but they are also made cheap.

Hey, I brought a prebuilt and just added a power supply and a gfx :( The prebuilt was 500 while the other stuff was 100 more JIT93
You're less of a sheep, but still rather silly.
Instead of spending money on those prebuilt components you could have bought comparable parts: a cheap, well-ventilated case, a decent motherboard to suit your needs, RAM, PSU. CPU, HDD and probably spent less than 600 dollars. Especially if you shopped the deals.
Desktops are so amazingly simple to put together. The motherboard manual tells you EXACTLY where to plug everything. There's really no excuse not to do it yourself.
From a social stand point, I'd laugh, and mention that I see more Macbooks than Dells.
I can say that I think every computer that has been in every one of my schools have all been Dell Desktop PCs. Maybe because they're cheap, or so many are made that a large amount can be bought?
Hp, Dell, and Apple have to be the top sellers though.
Foxconn has a near monopoly on PC manufacturing. Nearly every computer you buy, regardless of brand, was made by Foxconn.
HP, Dell, Apple, all made by Foxconn and rebranded.
Would you like to be in the electronics department of a school, or w/e, and have to put 100s of PCs together, instead of just buying them? Lol. There's also less of a chance for anything to go wrong when buying prebuild rather than building it themselves.People who buy prebuilt desktops are sheep.

Most of the prebuilts use junky power supplies and subpar motherboards. They're far more likely to have problems than something you put together yourself. Look at all of the Dell desktops from a few years ago that kept having issues with blown capacitors on their motherboards. The prebuilts are cheap because they cut corners.
Every office I ever worked in used Dell PCs.
However, we also used HP printers and scanners.
Personally, I buy individual parts from various manufacturers. (Antec Cases and Power Supplies, Gigabyte Mobos, Kingston RAM, MSI GPU, etc... etc...)
The only made-to-order/pre-built PCs I ever bought were a Commodore 64 PC, followed by a RadioShack Tandy DOS machine - WAY back in the day.
Ever since I got into Windows 3.5 and 95+, I've been buying individual parts.
