We seem to get our fair share of topics regarding Christianity (and I certainly do enjoy them), but I think Islam isn't subject to enough debate/discussion/criticism here on gamespot or an many other forums as well. People seem extra sensitive on the topic of Islam. there are some questions I would like to pose

1) Why is the criticism of Islam more taboo than the criticism of, say, Christianity?

2) Do you think that Islam receives too many free passes and too much preferential treatment?

3) Do you think criticising Islam is too widely labeled as "politically incorrect" or "offensive?"

4) why are many people still hesitant to even talk about Islam?

5) Do you think that much of criticism levied at Islam is justified/valid?

Trust me, islam certainly does get its share of criticism on this forum. However, I suspect that since christianity is more common in most of the countries that people post from here, they feel more comfortable in criticizing it.

that entirely depends on where you live. There are nearly a dozen Islamic theocracies in the world (most of which mandate such policies as the stoning of adulterous women and the hanging of blasphemers and homosexuals. it is not an uncommon occurance). There are also extreme lobbyist and special interests groups in many European countries.

Meh. I'm in America. We keep them in check by protesting every time they build a Mosque and broadcasting conspiracy theories on Fox News.

well think about this. when was the last time the atheist/secular community got up and said "we should avoid offending christians" or brushed aside Christianity's blatant intolerance nature towards homosexuals as "just an error in context." True, we do criticise Islam a great deal these days but there is a sizable chunk of our community that defends Islam (even when criticism is legitimate) or takes great measures to be inoffensive towards them and their beleifs (a luxury which they dont give to Christianity and one that neither religion truly deserves). Think of how many Atheists opposed draw Muhammad day or condemn any and all videos or articles that link the violence of fundamentalists to teachings in the Quran. Think of how many times you have heard atheists lob the term "islamophobe" at each other. You dont see such a division in the area of Christianity.

It does in some cases (due to a fear of getting death threats). Ultimately I'd say that criticizing Islam is a good thing as long as it's purely a theological issue. It will be done much more in the future.

Almost every fault pointed out by those arguing against Christianity can be applied to every religion. Including Islam. In fact Islam gets quite a bit of hate on here, at least it used to those who debated about it often have perhaps been banned.

It is simply because people actually take Islam seriously. It is realistically the last major religion in the world which still actually functions as a religion...and people actually fanatically practice it.

No, what I'm trying to say is Islam does not recieve the same type of criticism because it is taken seriously as a religion because the majority of people who preach Islam, practice Islam. When it comes to Christianity, which is mostly "practiced" in the Western world, plenty of people preach and nobody seems to practice it. This leads people to look at Christianity with less respect than Islam, not for religious reasons, but for reasons of merit.

I dunno. I've seen people say all christians are stupid/gullible on OT. However I have never heard anyone say all Christians are terrorists/want to destroy western society/are violent.

I have seen that for Islam, though. And on this board.

And I"ve seen the same people that don't miss a chance to slam Christianity backpedal and go all politically correct for Islam Which means there is a double standard here.....you're talking different people and thus we cannot say double standard if we've only the one example. But I compare the views of same individuals.

Of course. They make more demands because their religion is so strict. The whole halal meat thing gets on my nerves a lot. Just eat what you're given, and quit whining. It's like... yeah, we're going to make British restaurants 100% halal. That'll keep them happy. Well, no thanks.. I don't want that crap any more than they want non-halal meat. Sadly our preferences aren't priority, though.

Seriously? I have yet to meet a person who whines about "halal" meat, but you certainly are the first. There are people who are strictly vegans, people who dont eat foods with "E471", foods with a hint of alcohol, or people who only eat certain meats. Muslims dont rant about resturants being 100% halal, so its not a problem in any shape of form. Many people have specifics of foods, its a reality, stop whining.

And as for Islam, many people who do not understand Islam always generalise to what happens in the press, i.e. terrorist bombing, harsh realities and so forth. Saudi Arabia laws are barbaric and quite contradictory. Prophet Muhammads wife used to work but women in saudi arent exactly allowed, whole bombing for the sake of islam is forbidden, and I can go on into long depths of the topic. If anything, Muslims dont look at scum like Usama Bin Laden as a form of leaders or role models. These people are labelled "Wahabis", and I bet 90% of this forum dont know squat about them. Islam is a very nice and peaceful religion, its certain people within it that are totally backwards, infact, its not the people within islam, you will get bad people in every possible sect known to man.

Probably because it's threatened by western xenophobia. People are being careful to avoid demonizing Muslims, and will be suspicious of anyone who they see as doing so.

Do you have any idea how many muslims the Islamic extremists have killed? It's the extremists who kill and not Muslims! It's funny how people think they know everything Islam. Thanks to the media brainwashing all the Americans and portraying Islam as a guide to suicide bombing and terrorism. Give me one quote from the Quran which encourages muslims to kill non-muslims!

So beautifully said! And it's funny how America is killing innocent people in Iraq, getting their young soldiers killed and draining all the money in the war. But seriously, what happened to the "weapons of mass destruction"? yes, I thought so...

Muslims aren't trying to legislate their religion on me. (I'm sure they would if they could though). wstfld
Oh hell yes they would, they're doing it now in several areas of Europe.
