I love metal. Mostly listen to folk metal and such. I'm not that fond of most death metal though.

I still enjoy metal, yes.

One of my fav bands:

Lately I haven't been listening to metal much though. More into Tim Hecker, Boards of Canada, Amon Tobin, etc.

What The F*ck did I just listen to? How is that appealing at all?

That song is a perfect example of all the reasons why I never got into metal.

I only post sometimes, but nope, Metal in general is garbage, especially the Death variety. Theres a reason metal is enjoyed mostly by teenagers.

 You really make metal haters seem ignorant. What proof do you have that metal is mostly enjoyed by teenagers? I'd say more teenagers are listening to classic rock, rap, dubstep, hip hop, and stuff like that... Metal is definitely for a more mature crowd.

What The F*ck did I just listen to? How is that appealing at all?

- Fantastic, crushing, catchy guitar riffs and impressive 'shredding' throughout
- First 30 seconds are godly
- It's extremely groovey

It's like Slayer, except this is a lot faster, a lot heavier, a lot more technical, has more guttural vocals, and has more catchy moments/grooves. Ever listen to Slayer?

Did you really just try to compare that with Slayer? Catchy riffs? I don't hear any at all. A catchy riff would be something like in 2 minutes to midnight. The drums are beyond annoying, constant double bass masks a lack of actual talent. Also, there isn't any impressive shredding in the song that I can hear. The be quite blunt,t he song sounds like crap, just a bunch of really low noise. Stuff like that song is what gives metal a bad name.

I graduated from High School in 07 when stuff like Dub Step wasn't even around or big, there were a lot of Metal head kids at my school. Heck i listened to a little metal in high school, but i'm sorry these days theres no way i can listen to MOST metal bands, especially any with screaming or pig growls, thats just ridiculous. I wouldn't say all metal is terrible, but the kind most guys listen to on here is just ridiculous. Also theres terrible artists in all genres, rap has terrible acts, but then theres some great lyricists with amazing beats. Everyone has different tastes, was just saying mine isn't metal for the most part. My favorite band of all time is Pink Floyd btw.

[QUOTE="KHAndAnime"]Double bass doesn't mask anything, you clearly know very little about metal drumming. I feel sorry for your ears. :P There's a lot more to this song than 2 Minutes to Midnight .

The drumming is amazing by the way. Toxic-Seahorse

There is definitely more to that song than 2 minutes to midnight, there is no denying that, but that more stuff doesn't add anything good. If you want somrthing technical, look at Dream Theater, that's how to be very technical without it sounding like complete crap. I also never said that Iron maiden's drummer is better yet yous eem to insinuate that I did. Iron Maiden isn't the only band I listen to you know... The drumming isn't amazing at all. Other than the stupidly fast constant double bass (which sounds like crap but does seem difficult) the drumming is pretty subpar, especially since the drum set is pretty lackluster. Also uses a double bas pedal instead of two bass drums like most excellent drummers do. There are no difficult time signatures or time signature changes either. You asked me if I knew about metal drumming but it seems like you don't.

Dream Theater isn't very technical at all, they're just progressive. And with a comment like that, you have a lot to learn. :P

New Katalepsy > new wormed btw. ;)

If you're arguing pure speed and such, Davide Billia destroys all in drumming. If you want variety and more than just blastbeats, hammerblasts, gravs, etc., then there's plenty of great drummers out there: Jamie St. Merat, Derek Roddy, and I'd like to argue Alex Hernandez. Zach Hill is also fantastic outside of metal.

Saturos3091
No way man. The new Wormed is supreme metal album of 2013. I'm sticking to it. I've already listened to the album 100 times and I'm sure I'll listen to it 1000 more. I'm attempting to learn one of the songs on guitar, but it's literally going to take me months before I can play it fluently. :P But the new Katalepsy is incredibly good. I'd give Autopsychosis 9/10 and Exodromos 9.5/10. I have both albums constantly blasting in my car. I'm also really digging the new Defeated Sanity, and heavily anticipating the new 7 H. Target albums (both of them), and of course the new Gorguts. It's going to be an incredibly good year for metal.

KHAndAnime

I knew you wouldn't actually add anything after that.

Also, this is truly difficult drumming. difficult beyond belief with tons of time signature changes on a real drum set. No it doesn't feature constant double bass and it's not super fast, but that's not good drumming anyways. You can act like your song's drumming is amazing but there is a reason Mike Portnoy is world renowned.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DX_L3ziFSFw

Mike Portnoy is good but I don't personally don't rate him very highly on my metal drummer's list. Hell, I find this guy's playing way more impressive

Yeah, I never said he was the best or one of the best, I was just giving an example of a drummer playing an insanely difficult song. The Dance of Eternity has so many time signature changes it's ridiculous. As for your video, he's definitely really good, but I feel it's easier to be that good and fast when you have such a small set. Portnoy is way more dynamic and that has to count for something.

This explains everything. Thanks for that. Not hardcore enough right? You need more hardcore music because you're such a super hardcore guy. I get it. Seriously though, I have an actual question. What genre is the song KH posted? Is that death metal or what? There's so many damns ub-genres of metal now it's hard to keep track.

It's groovy brutal death metal. The subgenre tag is "brutal death metal." Like Suffocation, kind of. I don't care that prog metal has no balls. I listen to indie pop, acoustic free folk, and post punk on a regular basis. It's just that noodling a scale on guitar and using a metaphorical washing machine as a preamp only makes Dream Theater's music sound just that much more sterile. They leave nothing to the imagination with their music and it just comes off as formulaic and uninspired. I haven't heard the majority of their early material but I don't think I'd particularly care for it despite it being more legitimate than the turds they've been pumping out these past few years.

Well I would highly recommend listening to their earlier albums (especially Images and Words, and Metropolis pt. 2) because their more recent albums with the exception of their latest one, were subpar and did seem uninspired at some times. My main problem is that you said progressive metal has no balls, as if super dropped tuning, growling like a moron, and constant double bass makes something more manly....

In a way, it does. :P It's really not about being manly though. It's just about having more energy. Dream Theater sounds like a band of lethargics compared to many other metal bands out there. And if you seek a lot of energy in your music, you can't settle for less than extreme metal. :D

I'll give you that, they're not really an energetic band. Most prog metal bands aren't. They're more about what's exactly being played that the energy coming from it and that's just part of the subgenre. We have to remember the genres and their goals are very different so comparing them in these aspects isn't really going to get us anywhere.

It's not "manliness" that I was questioning, but there's no energy in noodling or meandering progressive music. Balls = energy, drive, aggression, etc. I like laid back music too, but even then I prefer it to have a richly textured sound (IE: doom, stoner, sludge, psychedelic, noise). Most progressive metal tends to be slicker than sheet metal bathed in oil.

Obviously not all of it either, but big name bands like Dream Theater...

Well that makes a lot more sense and I woudl agree with that. I guess I just misunderstood what you meant by "having balls", which I still find is an odd way to say what you wanted to say. :P
