you know what, id have to disagree with the notion that reading books makes you smarter. maybe a hundred years ago when people were stupid, reading books might have made you smarter. nowadays, we have google. if you have a question, you google it or maybe even wikipedia it.

They can, yes. I read Fahrenheit451 by Ray Bradbury and it totally blew my mind into another castle. :|

[QUOTE="MythofSisyphus"]

[QUOTE="EmilioDigsIt"]I rarely read books in school, but always got 95-100% on English reading and writing tests if I cared.
Wish I would read more, but my mind wanders.
EmilioDigsIt

stop playing so many video games and it will stop wandering while reading. Video games condition your brain so that you lose interest if you arent interacting with flashing objects on a bright colorful screen.

Its already too late! I wouldnt blame it all on video games. My mind wanders off to things like "oh I've read this before" "yeah I remember that" "I wonder if I went to Wendy's twice yesterday" "I would cast Christian Bale if I were to make this into a movie" "Did I really go to Wendy's twice yesterday?"

Can't get enough Baconators and Frosties? :P

Wikipedia can be a doubtful source. It is edited by 'random' people off the internet. But yeah Google can help. But personally I prefer reading from books. I love that 'book smell'.

Yeah, like Google can't provide crap sites. When Wikipedia is used the way it's meant to be, with good sources, it is one of the best sites ever.

well when speakers go out on your computer you gotta resort to something. :P :| ok that was just crap. :x

Also on a side note, when your power goes out for a while or you don't have internet at your convenience, its kinda hard to read up on stuff online, but then again not all of the computers might be free at the local library. :| Then again there are a LOT of books in there. I should probably try to findsome more decent books to read, but the only way I'll know for sure is if I read them. :? I don't like the idea since I came across a book with the time zone around WW2, and there were parts only meant for mature audiences... needless to say I never finished the book, nor did a report on it and failed even though the teacher helped point them out so I could avoid them. :x

studies have shown that kids who grow up in houses with a lot of books and spend a lot of time reading those books grow up to be better educated and make more money on average than kids who didn't read growing up.

The best way to tell if reading books makes you smarter is to, well, read books. Can't hurt, can it? Besides paper cuts I guess.

I definitely believe that books can and will enlighten you. I don't think that you're automatically smarter if you've read more books than someone else, but if you read a lot, you tend to learn new words and think about things differently.

Paper cuts are part of the play hazard :P

Maybe books should carry those disclaimers saying it can hurt people..

I'd say it does, reading books has made me a better writer and made my english more coherent. You can tell when people don't read especially on forums and other things because they type like total idiots. They also lack proper grammar skills and other things similar to that. You learn better english skills and grammar by reading books without even knowing it, your mind just absorbs it and mimics the writer.

If you're just reading because you think it makes yo smarter, then no is going to make you dumber because your not going to pay attention to you're book. It would only make you smarter if you actually want to read it.

I can't believe six people (so far) have denied that reading books educates you. It's just. . . I'm astounded.Linake

Because it's badly worded.

Reading doesn't make you smarter, it just expands your knowledge. Now you could argue that knowledges make you smarter, and i would agree to some point, but reading is just a mean to acquire that knowledge, the act of reading itself doesn't make you smarter. Not sure that makes sense, but i know what i mean.

You have no control over your intelligence. You essentially have what you are given. Reading can help you become a better educated person with an expanded vocabulary but it doesn't actually make you smarter.

Haha.. What I meant was not neccessarily if you read everything makes you smart. I've met a lot of people especially some of my classmates. When the teacher asks them 'Do you read?' they'll answer 'Yeah. I read' but truth be told, they only read those gossip magazines.

Yes. You learn new vocabulary, or learn about facts and various knowledge that almost all books (aside from children's books) provide.

Fiction books are good for entertainment. Rarely they provide info on something or can be taken seriously...

In general, yeah they do make people smarter because people are learning about new things as well as other people's experiences. I doubt people buy books about things they already know about!

Not only do you learn from the contents of what you're reading, but the reading itself is one of the best ways to work out your mind and increase your computing power. Reading aloud is supposed to be the very best activity for that.

Not necesarily the 'academic' intelligence.

It can definitely improve your grammar, but I would say it benefits the reader in the 'widening your horizons' aspect more than anything. Fiction stimulates the mind, whether by imagining fantasy settings or tickling your emotion over some of the more serious masterpieces. Non-fiction puts you to sleep, but before it does it probably teaches you SOMETHING (else why the hell are you reading it).

However, reading bad books makes you less intelligent. Reading biographies by most celebrities actually decreases your intelligence for every minute you have the cover of the book open. Stupid people should not be able to write about their unimportant and insignificant lives and make money off it.

THAT is a crime.

The only thing reading teaches you is better grammar and vocabulary. Otherwise, you can learn about just as much by watching tv if not more (history channel, discovery channel etc.)
