Alright, so if you were trying to buy a car, and there was a guy in Croatia (he's in the army, so he's on a US Military base) and he wanted to sell it to you, and says it would be shipped by plane through US Air Military Cargo so it would be free. The payment would be made through eBay's Buy Protection Program so you'd have 10 days to decide whether to keep it or not; if not, you'd just send it back. The car is only a few years old, and only a few thousand dollars.

The reason he says he can't keep it is because there would be very high import/custom taxes.

Does this sound like a scam?

Its pretty hard to scam through ebay (if your the seller), considering if you(the buyer) don't recieve what you payed for you can always file a claim, with ebay/your credit card company/paypal and get your money back.

The only way to get scammed through ebay is if your the seller, but I dont want to go into that.

I don't trust any transactions between individuals in other countries.

No, it doesn't sound like a scam. It does sound like a headache, though.

idunno just smells fishy because of the overseas issue. If something goes wrong, what are you going to do? Go to Croatia?

And what I dont understand is he gets free shipping, but the import costs are high? What about you? Would you have to pay import costs and stuff?

I agree, it is hard to scam if you buy with the ebay protection, i'd just be a little more wary with "soldiers" An old Math teacher of mine had a daughter that met a guy online trying to buy a car and claimed to pay 10 grand for a car that wasnt worth more than 4 grand, He met this "soldier" while he was off duty and they met up in florida, the "soldier" had about 2 grand on him but promised to have the rest by the end of that week, my teacher was going to just pack it up and drive back home because he couldnt trust a guy for 8 grand, the "soldier" pleaded with him because he obviously really needed the car for some reason, he told him if he didnt get the moeny to him in the next week he wouldnt live up to his "soldier" status and be an insubordinent citizen and couldnt live with himself. So my math teacher said "ok" and gave him the deed and keys to the car. He waited a month and never recieaved the money, so he tried to call the guy at his home and the phone line was disconected, he called the army base the guy said he was at and they said they nerver heard of him, so he got scammed outa 2k if he woulda sold the car locally

If what he says is true, I wouldn't have to pay shipping or import costs, from what I understand. But who knows.

In the original ad it doesn't say that the car is in Croatia and it would be shipped by air, but I had sent him an email asking how many miles were on the car and a few other questions, and that's what he responded with.

a car is being imported...there will be some form of taxation, and since you would claim ownership prior to it being imported, I imagine you would have to pay.

Trust me, the next thing coming is that he needs you to wire him a couple bucks to gas the car up for the trip or for some inspection.

I dunno, Some soldiers do have access to shipping items through unites states military cargo jets/planes and the military pays for the costs, but how did the car get into croasia in the first place? and what will happen to it once they drop it off in united states?
