If it's any comfort, my fav Nirvana songs are stuff like The unplugged version of "Man Who Sold the World", Negative Creep, Drain You, and Sappy.

And it all depends on the band as some bands are just great at choosing their singles. For instance, the only 30 Seconds to Mars songs I really like are their singles. Same with Sum 41.

As for Metallica, their best songs have gained great recognition over the years. One and Fade to Black are some of my all-time fav songs just because of how great they were.

Sometimes songs are popular for a reason you know...

Uh, no. Why would I hate someone who told me their favorite song? :?

Although I do dislike people who think they're better than other people because they listen to less popular music.

Guess what? One and Enter Sandman are in fact some of Metallica's best work. Back in Black is in fact the best thing AC/DC has ever done. Smells Like Teen Spirit is in fact the one song that best represents the entire Nirvana catalog. This topic reeks of elitism.

My favorite songs by popular bands are usually ones that are relativley obscure. Like Achilles Last Stand, by Led Zeppelin. Stairway is a great song, but this one's better.

When you are talking to someone...and you reach the "so what kind of music do you listen to?" subject...you ask for "what is your favorite song from this band?"

then the person answer something like this:

pantera: walk

nirvana: hearth shaphed box/smells like teen spirit.

metallica: one/enter sandman

iron maiden: the number of the beast/run to the hills

avenged sevenfold. blinded in chains/city of evil

AC/DC: back in black

I mean...why the hell do they gotta pick the most commercial song? (which is most of the times, one of the worst) maybe because of guitar hero games? (reason why everyone says that one is a badass song and that is the best metallica's song)

you know I would LOVE to hear someone who says "my favorite nirvana song...about a girl, mollie cryes...all apologies..." instead of "SMELLS LIKE TEEN SPIRIT!" and someone else saying "walk sucks, it does not compare to other pantera's songs"

why can there only be kids out there who have only listened one song of the band, and then they say stuff like "OMG THIS BAND AND THIS SONG IS SOO BADASS!!!"

lightleggy

If it is their most popular songs, wouldn't there be a better chance of the fan picking that as their favorite?

the fan, no. the kid who randomly listened to the band and then claimed to be an ultra fan, yes

I've been a Queen fan for 10 years, I own every album, could recite every song off of every album off of memory, but I still think Bohemian Rhapsody is their best song. Does that make me someone who claims to be an ultra fan?

No Enter Sandman is not some of their best work....

Sorry, with their first 3 albums and Death magnetic, Enter Sandman is really lack-luster in comparison....

Not a bad song by any means, but definitely not even close to their best.

Music snobs are laughable.....music is such an individual taste....the most "commercial" song can strike a cord with someone....Music is like beauty.....everyone assumes they know what is beautiful....when at the end of the day...someone somewhere thinks your idea of beauty is a repulsive....Omni-Slash

This.

It doesn't really bother me. The more popular/mainstream/commercial songs are exactly that for a reason: they are appealing to a lot of people. As for me, I just like what I like. Sometimes I like a band's/artist's most popular song the best, and sometimes I like more "obscure" or less popular songs of theirs.
