When I got stuck with a communal dorm this year I thought it was going to suck hard. It actually hasn't been too bad. When it comes to showers you just get naked after you've stepped behind the shower curtain and then dry off and get dressed before you walk out (and when I say "dressed" I just mean having on boxers or wrapping a towel around yourself). Just makes sure to wear flip flops or something so you don't get every foot infection known to man, plus a few undiscovered ones. If you're really shy and just can't stand the thought of other people seeing you in your knickers then you can always just go to the bathroom fully clothed during the "off-times" when most people have finished showering.

As far as toilets go, my experiences thus far have been so-so. Usual one or two toilets will have been used by some **** who doesn't know how to flush (and when it comes to the men's room the person using the toilet before you looks like he never learned how to aim either). Sometimes though you get a perfect storm where either every unsanitary moron in the dorm had to crap or the janitor just skipped a shift and you end up with a bathroom that is unusable. That said, it's also been my experience that in a dorm building there will be multiple bathrooms and one of those is bound to have at least one toilet that's useable. Also, some floors will just randomly have cleaner residents than others (I myself usually opt to use the bathroom on a different hall than mine since my hall probably claims the worst bathrooms in the building).

I guess thats my only concern even at home I cant use the washroom/shower unless its clean also I don't want people stealing my towels lol

Which is why you keep your towel in your room except when you're showering. I learned that little trick after one of my towels got stolen :P

I ment when ur showering as a prank

Dorm. You get to know more people than you would at an apartment plus it's usually cheaper.

This is college we're talking about, not high school. People don't do that kind of thing in college. Well, your friends/roommate might, but random people won't.

IDK, I used to think that way, until I went to a nude beach with my friends this week (well wasn't really a nude beach, but we were in the nude anyways), and it is very relieving going around in your birth day suit I must say.

Yeah? Were you not awkward being nude with your friends?

Surprisingly not, even with girls there (one of them is my best friend), I was told I have a nice body so that made it easier. Although being bear hugged by a man in the nude in very disturbing.

I must add that being at the beach for 5 hours (in the middle of the day) nude with no sun screen, really hurts the next day, I actually have slight 2nd degree burns on my arm.

I want to also apply for dorms next year but I dont know about thewashrooms/shower situation I heard some have privite but I dont know how much they are yet

My experience has been pretty similar to this. My dorm building this year had a reputation for being the *****iest and oldest one on campus, which is probably true, but even so it hasn't been too bad. Luckily I haven't gotten any foot infections, but one of the downsides is how quickly illnesses spread when everyone's living so close together. I swear a type of cold would start at one end of my hall, then make its way to me at the other end of the hall, then while I would be getting over the cold the cold would be back at the other end of the hall mutating slightly, then it would come back to my end of the hall and the cycle would repeat itself. But other than that it has been much easier than I thought it would be, and I consider myself to be a somewhat prudish person.

So which are cheaper? Some people here are saying dorms are more expensive than apartments or the opposite. I also would like to know.

I see. I would like an apartment much more than a dorm (although the college I'll likely be going requires you to stay at a dorm for a year) but I'm going to be extremely tight on money.

Dorm life isn't too bad whether you're a hermit like me or a complete wolf for the weekend.

Meh, when I start colllege next school year, I'll either be going to a dorm or staying home. I'll decide which way I'll go once I go to the accepted student days of all colleges I've been accepted to and check out the dorms of each.

I wish I could have an apartment as an option...

Depends on where you go. Each college's pricing for dorms is different. Also, apartment prices vary wildly. In the area near my college there are apartments ranging from like $300 per month to $1200 per month (sans utilities). Where I go to school though the dorms cost about $8500 per year plus another $800 to $1400 thanks to the meal plan the university forces you to buy if you live on campus. As a result of that it can be cheaper to live in most apartments even on your own at my college. And if you have other people rooming with you you can get a really nice apartment for significantly less than what you would have paid for inferior living conditions in a dorm. Some colleges have much cheaper dorms than mine though, so the savings get smaller. Also, once you factor in utilities, natural gas, gasoline for your car, commute time, and other expenses the savings get a lot smaller though with enough roommates and a cheap enough apartment you can still come out on top.

There are other factors too. Some kids have scholarships that pay for dorms. Some parents refuse to let their kids stay in any living arrangement other than a dorm (this always seems to be a problem with at least one person whenever people try to find other kids to rent an apartment or house with). If you don't have a car then it may not be feasible for you to live off-campus period. And when living off-campus it can be harder to do stuff on campus (if you live close by it may not be a problem, but if you're driving distance away from your campus then suddenly meeting friends on a whim and frequenting campus activities becomes a lot less appealing).

Yeah, do dorms for at least a semester. They are actually pretty fun. Your own apartment is obviously the best, but the dorms give you that college feel you won't find in an apartment really.

Be careful with living at home. I've heard horror stories of kids who opted to commute from home rather than live in a dorm or apartment and college ended up being an extension of high school for them (parents still had curfews in place, they still got punished by parents, etc). Hell, I've not only heard said horror stories, I've seen them in real life. My cousin lived at home since his college was in the same town and whenever my family would visit his he was still getting treated like he was in high school.

That may not happen to you, but you can count on less freedom if you live at home than if you move out and live in a dorm.

Either way I think i'd prefer my own Dorm/apartment

walking around naked alone> walking around naked with another guy in the room.

My school requires all stuends live on capus until they have aquired 30 hours (CLEP and Dual-credit hs classes don't count). If I had the option I would have never lived on campus. Our dorms are TINY, 4 people in there is a bit too crowded and we have hall bathrooms which people **** up all the time. Dorms suck terribly IMO.

Depends on where you go. My dorm room is actually significantly bigger than my room at home was, and I had a decently sized room there. Here, there're two people to a room, not four, and I think two is far more common than four.

i moved into apartment freshman year of college. 1 bedroom with a roommate. It was great, but having to work 20+ hours a week on top of full time school gets tough. if you can handle it, thenlife after college is pretty easy
