I went to see this movie earlier after reading some good reviews. I was pleasently suprised. I don't go so the cinema much so this was easily the best new movie i've seen so far this year. Anyone else see it? thoughts?

I watched it with friends a couple of days ago. I've gotta say, I didn't like it D:
I was the only one of my friends who didn't :P
Too violent for my taste, however I did like the slow-mo effects, especially the very last one.
Great film, saw it in my local IMAX, probably the only film I remember where I liked the 3D in it, mainly due to the slowmo scenes. Lena Headey is great in all her roles, Urban nailed Dredd. Didn't go into it expecting much but was presently suprised. Hope there is a sequel will be a shame if there isn't.
It looks unlikely that there will be a sequel. It only made 8 million since it opened, and made just 10 mil overseas.
EDIT: Here's what it made so far officially. Couldn't link earlier.
And I've heard nothing but good things from this, too.
I thought it was fantastic. The theatre wasn't packed, either. Though a group of teenagers sat down right in front of me and my wife and one of them started rocking back into my knees. I asked him to stop and he threatened me, so I flashed my badge and made him look like a tool. He got up and found other seats.
Urban was a damn good Dredd and I didn't even mind the fact that it was 3D.

Did you give him your best Dredd impression and say "I AM THE LAW"?

No, but my Dredd impression is the best in the department, so far. Though I want to clear my throat every time I try it. It's very tough to make your voice sound as grave as Urban's.
Decided not to go when I saw 3D in the title....LJS9502_basic
They should have just called it Judge Dredd. The 3d makes it sound even cheesier than the Sylvester Stallonefilm.
I liked the comics, hated the 95 film, and liked this film.
Decided not to go when I saw 3D in the title....LJS9502_basicThey have a non-3D version of the film, you shortsighted hipster dingleberry.

They wanted to distance themselves from the Stallone film, hence no Judge in the title.[QUOTE="toast_burner"][QUOTE="LJS9502_basic"]Decided not to go when I saw 3D in the title....Hallenbeck77

From what heard, the 3d was well done. It kinda worked in a way for them; without it, it might not have made as much as it did. Not that it made that much to begin with.[QUOTE="Hallenbeck77"][QUOTE="toast_burner"]

I'm not saying they shouldn't have had it in 3D. I'm saying they shouldn't have had 3D as part of the title.

Gotta let the public know there's a 3D release somehow. It's may be a cheesy title, but hey, what can you do? AT least they'll drop the 3D from the title for the DVD release...if you buy the non 3D version, anyway. It's received good reviews, sure...but when a movie on opening weekend doesn't even crack the top 5 (opened at # 6) with only $6 million to show for its efforts, well...I wouldn't call it a hit. It'll more than likely be forgotten within the next week or so.It got good reviews, i'll see it eventually. karl Urban is underated, good actor and i'm happy JD 3D is a hit.

It might be commercially unsuccesful as you stated, they should've advertised more on promos and such to target audience. I heard of the movie first time when it released from OT lol. I thought its just another low budget remake, but after reading its reviews the film got me very interested :)

I think this movie has "DVD cult classic" written all over it. It flops in the theaters, gets rushed to DVD and Blu Ray, makes a killing in sales, and ultimately convinces the producers to proceed with a sequel.

That is a possibility, but I think only if Lionsgate is willing to aggressively promote it when it comes time for the home release--and word of mouth spreads, of course. It surprises me that it did so poorly in it's opening weekend. It really was a great movie. Exactly how Judge Dredd should have been.
It was a good film but it just seemed so empty. It would be a sweet series if they made it a high budget thing but the film was I found to be quite like "well this is cool... oh this is literally all its about?" *film ends* "Ah that sucks".
The effects were great. The Dredd guy was pretty much spot on, the villian was great but it just all lacked a bit of story.

But will it be one of those sh*tty direct-to-dvd movies is the question, cus even if it does well on the home market, I don't see them being all that willing to pump another 40 million into it for a second try.[QUOTE="Oleg_Huzwog"][QUOTE="Hallenbeck77"] It's received good reviews, sure...but when a movie on opening weekend doesn't even crack the top 5 (opened at # 6) with only $6 million to show for its efforts, well...I wouldn't call it a hit. Obviously, the theatrical release is a wash, but who knows--maybe it'll be released on DVD in time for the holiday season, it could be a boost.[QUOTE="Oleg_Huzwog"][QUOTE="Hallenbeck77"] It's received good reviews, sure...but when a movie on opening weekend doesn't even crack the top 5 (opened at # 6) with only $6 million to show for its efforts, well...I wouldn't call it a hit.
