Not sure, but there was a really good article on this in either Discover or WIRED last spring. It basically went on about how people were vicous on the internet since the earliest days of the (whatever it was called...the pre-internet), and the early newsgroup networks of the internet.
I forget what the writer thought the reasoning was, but it was really good, and he/she proposed a set of internet communication guidelines that posters, bloggers, blog-commenters, and digg-commentors should follow. I found it interesting...I'm thinking it was WIRED, but it very well could have been Discover, because I read that all the time last semester....If you find it interesting you might try to search for the article...I'll see if I still have the issue laying around sometime tomorrow if I remember.
