  1. An apps store. Apple's App Store has been a raging success, as has Android's Market. So Windows 8 appears as if it will also have an app store called, not surprisingly, "Windows Store." But there are no indications how Microsoft will manage the countless thousands of apps available for Windows, or many other details about the store at this point.

  2. Improved energy efficiency. The slides spend a good deal of time describing the many ways in which Windows 8 will be more energy efficient, including an update to the core kernel manager, reduced power use while idle, better sleep and resume, and more.

  3. Faster startup. Windows 8, according to the slides, will feature faster startup through a new feature that combines the Logoff and Hibernate states.

  4. Push-button reset. This will allow you to re-install Windows with the push of a button. Most important is that Windows will retain all of your files, settings, applications, and so on, without wiping them out.

  5. Face recognition. This new safety feature will let you log on using face recognition.

  6. Support for slates. Slates are one of the form factors Windows 8 will support. WindowsPad anyone?

  7. Better help and support. Every time a new version of Windows comes out, this seems to be on the punch list. We'll have to see if this time it actually happens.

  8. Better identity management. The decks lay out a vision in which user accounts don't just live on one PC --- you can carry them from computer to computer, and to other devices. Identities can live and be backed up in the cloud. As a slide puts it, "Identity evolves from machine centric to user centric."

I don't see 8 coming out anytime soon considering how wildly successful 7 was.

Windows 8 promises to be the biggest let down yet.

Considering the new fangled file system Microsoft intended for Vista has not been mentioned, I would hazard a guess that it's been put on hold and so Windows is still going to be basically the same crap it has been since Vista.

Any "Windows Store" for apps is going to be a pure gimmick since Windows is an open platform. No one will have any reason to buy something off a Windows app store unless there just so happens to be a handy application that is sold only on that site. It's not like the iPod/iPhone/iPad where you have no choice but to go through the app store if you want something. As for the push-button reset, I can see a few instances where that would be handy but the entire point of re-installing the OS in most cases is that you either want to wipe the HDD in order to clean everything up or you need to wipe the HDD because something went horribly, horribly wrong. Leaving the files, applications, and especially settings intact kind of defeats the point of reinstalling.

Faster start up? Why do they only seem to be focusing on this now? Don't they realise that it is a pain to wait over a minute of three before you can start using your computer? This should have been a focus form the very start. Instant gratification. Ubuntu, for instance, starts up in under a minute.

I don't like the idea of an app store, it seems pointless. Though I don't think microsoft wold be insane enough to limit what programs you can install like apple have. Face recognition is interesting, I still prefer the idea of a fingerprint scanner, but this could be better for people who don't have a fingerprint scanner as it will, presumably, work with any camera.

Some of those just aren't exciting to me. I don't trust facial recognition for my security uses, not to mention such ability is already available from OEM installs of Windows 7. My current laptop came with W7 and it had some Dell software for facial recognition log in, I never used it and don't want to use. Number four is a nice features, although you shouldn't have to reinstall Windows to being with. You can also achieve the same thing with Linux by having your home folder as a separate partition. I don't see the need for full desktop OSes on slates. You really need specialized OSes for slates because of the touch interface. Windows has had touch support since XP but it never caught on because a desktop interface doesn't work with touch devices, and by the time W8 comes out there will already be great slate OSes in the form of Android, MeeGo, iOS, etc. Better help and support? Does anyone actual use the help and support in Windows? I know I never did. And number eight isn't a bad idea, but more details need to be know before we can comment on it.

I see... I'm not really sure how the Windows Store will work within Windows 8, but there's enough freeware / shareware floating around to make it seem unnecessary. I can see how it would have it's place on an Android device, but I don't think that's what they were getting at :?

I don't think it's enough to put people off Windows OS's all together. Sure, if it isn't a big enough improvement it will probably fail, but a lot of people will just stay on Windows 7 and wait for Windows 9, kind of like what happened when Vista launched. I don't think they'll launch it for a good while anyway, and instead they'll try and draw out the lifespan of Windows 7, so they have plenty of time to work on new features.

im using a mac right now as my laptop, but my brother's pc is on windows 7. i love windows 7. :D it's faster, looks better, and it's everything vista should have been.

edit: whoops, to stay on topic, i hope they dont send out windows 8 anytime soon because that would be very expensive on our part. i mean, we just bought windows 7 >_>

BAAAAAAH! I had a 20 Gig SSD that I used strictly for the OS, but all of special files from my Terabyte's worth of video games that would get stored under user/AppData and similar folders was just too much :( The next time I reformat, the OS will be back on another, larger SSD.

True, the cost per GB for SSDs is pathetic, but you can make one a boot drive and put quite a few programs in it. Clearly it is not for media, but it does feel like a significant upgrade to your computer. The analogy of going from dial-up to DSL is pretty accurate. I would wait until the end of the year to purchase one though, seeing as the new generation controllers are expected to be unveiled at that time, driving the price of existing drives down (hopefully).

Besides, MS can't come out with a good stable operating system just yet, they need to go through a few iterations of garbage (think Win98, Me, dare I say Vista).

It's not like every software and game manufacturer would put their stuff on the "Windows Store" though. It would just wind up being another online outlet. The only reason all the apps for the iPhone/iPad are on the app store is because it's a closed platform and thus the only way to sell your product for those platforms is to go through the app store.

Microsoft needs to stop moving so damn fast.

They're ruining PC gaming especially by constantly creating new DX versions, we can't move forward if the standard is always changing.

How many games are taking advantage of DX11 now? I would argue a small chunk. GPUs currently available are not really "great DX11 cards" anyway. :(

DX9 was the standard for a long time. DX 11 is really what they intended DX10 to be, and the DirectX team has stated this.

Oh man, don't say that - I don't want the 3D craze to infect my OS. :(

dude just imagine a laptop with the 3d effect of the 3ds that somehow you can turn off when you dont feel like it, but turn it on when you want it, genius!

Even 3D? :vomit:

Even 3D!

Woah now. You're saying the R800 and Geforece 400 series aren't great DX11 cards?

They are the first DX11 cards out, in a time when DX11 is not fully used in games, so they're alright but I don't really think they were made with DX11 in mind. I don't want to say that feature was tacked on per se, but I have a feeling their performance will be disappointing when DX11 games are more mainstream. They do a fantastic job with DX9 and 10 games though.
