Yesterday I was watching the discovery channle and this guy (scientific) was saying that the world will end in 2012. This guy (scientific) said that a group of people called "MAYA" that lived millions of years ago wrote a paper that the world will end in 2012. Do u believe this?

The Maya people, i've heard of them. And there've been too many threads about this whole 2012 doomsday thing.

No... just because the Mayans' calander ends in 2012 doesn't mean the world is going to end. They just got lazy, or maybe they just wanted to screw with us. Maybe it seemed funny to them at the time. -_-

Nothing's going to happen.

the "MAYA" civialization were off by there predictions on the moon calculations (the moon phases and time when it would come up) to me it would appear that if they were off due to time changes on earth. it would make it seem logical that they would be off in their predicitions on this aswell

I think that people forgot that the date on the Mayan calendar and the one on the calendar we use now are far, far apart.

The word "scientific" added in parenthasis automatically gives "this guy" credibility.

I'm just joking, though. It is actually true. (That the Mayans predicted it, that is. Not necessarily that it's going to happen.)

Its the Mayans, get it right. It was hundreds of years ago, not millions, there was no paper, it was on stone. There was no such program, you are just recycling what you see on this forum. And its a load of bull, the world will live for many millions of years yet, by the time it goes, the human race will be on lots of different planets, killing them too, theres no stopping us.

How would the Mayans know if the world ended in 2012? Did a talking kitty wearing a fuzzy red sweater tell them?

The Mayans made it so the cycle would repeat itself, it's just that people who discovered this weren't aware till later.

People who have pointed out that the Mayan calander is cyclical and that the 2012 date is a just the end of the biggest cycle are right.  The Mayans did believe that any given large cycle (I believ ethe term is Bak'tun) could be the last, but they had cerimonies that they felt prevented that.  I gues the question would be is if we don't practice the ritual on 2012, would that be the end.  My general guese is no.  Be careful believing Discovery channel stuff, they try to be accurate (just like the history channel), but extreme stories sell ad space, so they tend to hyperbolise.  I'm not a mesoamericanist, but I am an archaeologist, so I'm used to seeing the things I study get blown out of perportion for ratings, its just how it goes.  Don't worry, I think we can avoid an apocolipse in 2012 without a blood sacrifice, but then again, who knows?
