Pleas don't attack the old culture, just focus on modern research for you targets.  If they felt a cycle was key, then who are we to complain.  The question that is more important is how accurate is our modern interpretation.  Archaic peoples lived thier own personal lives, we can only hope to understand them, but can never judge them.

If these mayan guys had predicted something that has happened before. I.e they predict that there would be a world war 2 then I would be spooked. Didn't these ancient priests predict cars like 1000 years before it happened though?

People who have pointed out that the Mayan calander is cyclical and that the 2012 date is a just the end of the biggest cycle are right. The Mayans did believe that any given large cycle (I believ ethe term is Bak'tun) could be the last, but they had cerimonies that they felt prevented that. I gues the question would be is if we don't practice the ritual on 2012, would that be the end. My general guese is no. Be careful believing Discovery channel stuff, they try to be accurate (just like the history channel), but extreme stories sell ad space, so they tend to hyperbolise. I'm not a mesoamericanist, but I am an archaeologist, so I'm used to seeing the things I study get blown out of perportion for ratings, its just how it goes. The extinction of Mankind is just impossible to calculate. Believe it or not, around 990, before the first millienia, every European believed that the world would end. That's why all these myths about monsters like vampires and werewolfs began during that time. Obviously thye were mistaken.
