[QUOTE="whipassmt"] C'mon that was long ago. And it wasn't "gays" it was "sodomites" (there is a difference between the two terms). And others were executed that way as well (witches, heretics, etc.).

whipassmt

They were burned as sodomites for being gay.

In five countries, being gay is punishable by death.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-gay_violence#Contemporary

They were burned as sodomites for their actions (i.e. sodomy). People in the Middle Ages did not think of that in terms of "being gay (in fact the word gay back then meant happy, and in the 18th century referred to prostitutes, the term gay in relation to men attracted to men is quite recent) and "sexual orientation".

Semantics semantics semantics.

They were burned for f***ing other guys, which was deemed as sodomy.

Yes. But they were burned for an action that they chose to commit. I'm not of course saying I agree with the punishment (burning is quite harsh).

And that action was condemned for being gay in nature and being proof of homosexuality.

it it rocks their boat, ok, but they should respect just as they expect to be respected, it was completly uncalled to infiltrate the church and do those actions there. I support the judge's ruling.

why is this controversial?

lets boil it down to the facts:

Group A decides to vandalize and disrupt Group B's gathering and building. Pretty clear who is at fault

Why is religion and sexual orientation even a factor in the headlines? Oooooooh cuz it will sell more papers.... :P

Seems fine to me. You don't have the right to disrupt a churches religious service on private property. What the hell was the point of the group doing this anyways? They're only hurting they're cause and making a bad name for normal gay people.

I live in Lansing, MI. I've never seen this Church or group though.

I practice in front of this Judge on occasion, not shocked at this ruling. I will say that this group would do well to listen and not find themselves back in this court..it would not go well for them.

I can understand them getting a guilty sentence, but I also feel the prospect of a $10,000 fine is a little extreme.
They said it was 'offensive' but I didn't see anything in the excerpt that should be deemed so.

I want to get a job in the evangelical church as one of those people that they touch and cast the demons out of.

I agree with the ruling. Don't know what they were trying to accomplish by doing that, but the acting out in a church isn't helping anyone. Hell, it may just make things worse as a truly religious nut would be further convinced that homosexuals are the devils children....

Considering this was in the Church, I don't see what's wrong with this ruling.

It was immature and offensive for them to act that way while people were at a religious service on private property.

airshocker

Ah, I see, it's alright to **** with people engaged in religious ceremony, so long as you're not on private property. Glad to see your rules of decorum are not based on how people are actually behaving, but rather on who owns what.

I'm all for free speech and sharing one's opinion but disrupting the church service in this manner was a bit much. Stand outside and share material, sure, but this response of this homosexual group was a bit much.

Gay pride parade is on public property.. A Church isprivate property.. I despise the Evangelical movement as much as the next person, but that isn't a good comparison.

Why are religious groups not prosecuted when they disrupt a gay pride parade?kuraimen
They may be able to protest at these events, but the police will protect the rights of gay people to have a parade and march. Just like how the KKK can march despite all those people lining up to yell at them. People can protest them if they do so on public grounds.

The judge made the right choice.
