There are good bands around now, but are any of them innovative like the old days? Will any of them be rememebred and mentioned as influences by future bands?

the last influential bands were back in the 90's so far there has not been much but in the next three years or so there might be something.

Yes, because those bands influenced what's happening now. Wait ten years, then the current stuff will be influencing that stuff.

Obviously, bands of the future will be influenced by bands of today.

Not everyone listens exclusively to music from the 60s/70s.

Link Wray was extremely innovative, you know inventing those power chords and all. I believe he is considered a musician that is very "old"

I think that we have to wait a couple of years, the bands that are remembered in the future have done something that sets them apart from other bands, you can't only be really good, and have many fans. Your music has to move people and it has to live for generations to come.

Meh, they didn't really innovate much. They're still good, the bassist is very skilled for Yes. But they didn't innovate as much as other artists

As bad as the music is.. you gotta admit, Lil Jon and atlanta crunk was very influential.  Almost every rap artist now has a crunk style influence.  Especially in the south.  And he even incorporated rock into his rap music...

Crunk music was probably the biggest ground breaking style since the year 2000.  Even if you hate it, it's true.

10 years from now music will sound different. Therefore, today's music innovated into the form that it will be in 10 years from now. Music is changing, therefore is innovating.

There are good bands around now, but are any of them innovative like the old days? Will any of them be rememebred and mentioned as influences by future bands?Film-Guy

These days, usually what happens is that a band has to be derivative just to become popular. Then once they become popular, they get criticized when they try to expand their horizons. When the band changes their stuff up, their fans usually label them sellouts or something, and the non-fans still don't care about them.

There are exceptions though. For example Radiohead. Radiohead started out as crap, but then they started getting more original after they started to get big. And instead of criticizing them for diversifying themselves, people praised them for diversifying themselves. Of course, it probably helped that they started being more innovative very soon after they became popular. If Radiohead had waited longer, they probably would've become typecast as a certain kind of band, and then their fans would ditch them as soon as they tried to branch out.

yeah, but if you think about it, that happens all the time in music. Think of the 80s hair metal bands. They got to the point to where they were all playing the same songs, same singer, same ballads at the same times, same hair, etc. Yet music still broke away from that stage. And it will again, I can predict that with 100% confidence.

this stagnation was also present in the 50s show tune singers, before the British invasion.

Well if we are going by decade here than the 00's aren't doing to good right now. If we are going by generation than we can put the 90's in there and (although im not the biggest fan) Nirvana will be remembered for quite a while to come.

But what you're describing still applies to today's situation. The emo/punk rock genre is sitting in a cesspool of rinse and repeat, and I'm sure some new genre will spring off of it, or rock, or of rap, techno, etc. Then music will have changed. This new genre will be called... ploofa! :P I hold copyright privledges, so don't think of stealing. 8)

My actual point was that the bands becoming popular right now are recycling older bands....and not innovating.  I would think eventually a band or two will step up....but as it stands today...none are.  Most bands that were creating a different "style" music were known to be doing so.  Now, it's just copy.
