[QUOTE="Luncbox1"]But what you're describing still applies to today's situation. The emo/punk rock genre is sitting in a cesspool of rinse and repeat, and I'm sure some new genre will spring off of it, or rock, or of rap, techno, etc. Then music will have changed. This new genre will be called... ploofa! :P I hold copyright privledges, so don't think of stealing. 8)LJS9502_basic

My actual point was that the bands becoming popular right now are recycling older bands....and not innovating. I would think eventually a band or two will step up....but as it stands today...none are. Most bands that were creating a different "style" music were known to be doing so. Now, it's just copy.

oh, yeah. I guess none really have broken into the mainstream. They're still playing in clubs and such. According to history's track record, it should happen pretty soon. Although I guess the whole MTV and commercialization will obviously affect this trend. oh well, my head hurts from thinking about the future.

Here's a few possible suggestions:  The Pixies, Mike Patton, Sean Malone/Sean Reinert (at least in prog-metal), Imogen Heap (I think she'll have some kind of influence in the future).  Probably more...the ones that influence are generally unheard of.  Barely anyone remembers The Stooges or Link Wray.

Wait...Ulver!  To be honest, there are quite a few metal bands branching out into new areas, but Ulver is definitely its own creation.

The 00's don't have many influential bands, but there are a few. Coldplay is a big one, lots of bands have imitated their style to some degree. Green Day has had a large cultural influence by releasing a record that pretty much sums up what the 00's will be remembered for: George Bush, Iraq, and a country divided by moral issues and religion. What else... I think that Killswitch Engage will be remembered for popularizing hardcore music.

Another thing I've noticed is the breakthrough of Christian artists in the secular industry. Switchfoot, Relient K, P.O.D., etc. are all really popular Christian bands. Something we've never really seen before in the music industry.

I don't think that Coldplay is really that innovative.

Don't get me wrong, I like them, but they sort of seem like they're copying off of Radiohead and U2.

OK. Some people in this thread seriously need to know the difference between innovative and influential. Green Day and Coldplay are influential; how can they not be? They're hugely popular. Are they innovative? **** no.

Anyway the problem with today's generation not having as many prominent innovators is that there is actually a lot of technical and experimental artists out there; so much so that it is almost impossible for a single forbidden>

I can just picture this generation growing up, and in their elder years remenising about the music they grew up with. "Remember that one song, but My Chemical Romance... the one I was listening to when I cut my wrists for the first time? That track was great. What ever happened to good music?"
