Reading some Descartes?LJS9502_basic
Wow, hey now, I like Rene Descartes. He was one of the few famous philosophers I know who tried to prove God existed through logic and reason back in his day.

I don't think he was technically a philosopher, but don't forget St. Thomas Aquinas, who drew from Aristotlian philosophy to argue for the existence of God.

Yeah, I've actually learnt a few things from my few philosophy classes.:P

Philosophy of Religion was one of my favorite classes in college. And one of my easiest 'A's.

It's not that good.

I've only done 5 weeks, but it is nowhere near the complexity of discussion you would find in OT.

It is mostly namby-pamby BS in which during class discussion the teacher accepts every opinion no matter how dumb it sounds, or twists what they says into something sensible.

What we study, we don't actually go into much depth about anyway.

EDIT: For you FL, as long as you study a bit, and do some homework, it would be a doddle, and you would easily get an A grade.

Yes, in today standards his arguments do seem a little illogical but at least he tried using logic and reason. Unlike the fundamental religious people who claim they follow the same belief as I do yet believe the world is only 6000 years old and think Harry Potter is considered a threat to Christian values. If you put it to perspective, Descartes is still more reasonable than the people of today. :( Its quite depressing.

well, regular intro to philosophy was lame. philosophy of religion had a much better teacher. but it was still nothing compared to some of what I've read here. But, before htat class I knew nothing about western religion. Or Eastern.

there are certain things that all sentient beings seem to percieve in roughly the same way. A storm, for instance, is something that will have the whole animal kingdom responding. Injury is another example. It is important to keep in mind that there is nothing distinguishing us from other animals but our intellect.

but I agree, I believe that the physical world is an illusion because it is so prone to change, and so capriciously. I think that quantum physics supports this view. The universe is however you see it, based on what questions you ask. so, it is not that the universe is beyond understanding; it is that there is nothing for us to understand.

...An illusion.

After all, our senses are just things that help us perceive the world and understand it. But these senses only work arbitrarily on a human basis. When taken out of a human context, they are null and void. Think about the way you are looking at this computer screen. It is, after all, the way your eyes perceive it to be, no? All of our systems of deduction and calculation, our theories, these are all just coping mechanisms to understand our environment.

They are just how we perceive and understand from a merely human level.

Discuss.

idk who said it but "I think therefore I am"
